Kashmiri Stone-pelters are my people, can’t demonize them, says IPS officer Basant Rath

New Delhi – IPS officer Basant Kumar Rath said on Thursday that stone-pelters of Kashmir are his people and he cannot disown them. He also said that Indian media have failed to understand the Kashmir issue.

“Kashmiri people are my people.. can’t demonize them. People by nature are people. They have emotions and feelings, you have to treat them well,” the IPS officer said while addressing a gathering at India Today Mind Rocks.

He cited the example of his own family and said that he never liked his father’s authoritative attitude, but this “doesn’t mean I am not his son.”

“Kashmir has a history, we have to respect the sentiments and the people there. There is a gap between the politicians speeches and bureaucrats’ work on the ground,” he said.

“Just because somebody doesn’t agree with you [the government], you can’t demonize them,” he added.

While speaking about religion, he said, “Religion is not important for the people but for the politicians.”

Mr. Rath comes from Odisha and an alumnus of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), the 2000-batch IPS officer, he is best known for his straightforwardness on social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter.

His strict attitude in profession and dauntlessness has won many hearts on Twitter and Facebook.

“NAJD” is Iraq not Saudi Arabia in the Prophetic narrations

0

The Najd mentioned in the narrations of the Prophet Mohammed peace be upon him – is IRAQ not what is now called Najd as Riyadh in Saudi Arabia.

“The najd is in the direction of the east, and for the one who is in Madeenah then his Najd would be the desert of IRAQ and it’s regions for this is to the east of the People of Madeenah.”

Ibn Hajr quoted al-Khattabi

Historian Ali ibn al-Athir, who had frequently traveled to Iraq during the era of Saladin and had written his monumental work al-Kamil fi at-Tarikh (The Complete History), writes in his work ‘al-Nihâyah’:

“Najd is the highland region. This name is given to area beyond the Hijâz towards IRAQ.”

Ibn Umar reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “O Allah, bless us in our Syria. O Allah, bless us in our Yemen.” He repeated it and on the third or fourth time, they said, “O Messenger of Allah, and in our IRAQ.” The Prophet said, “Verily, from there will appear upheavals and tribulations and from there will rise the horn of Satan.” -(Tareekh Damishiq of Ibn-Asakir pg.571 and more)

The above hadith has a difference in wording where the man asks “and our NAJD as well as the wording mentioned above where he asks “and our IRAQ”.

Ibn Umar reported: I saw the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, pointing in the direction of ‘IRAQ and saying three times, “Verily, the tribulation will come from there. From there will rise the horn of Satan.” -(Musnad Ahmad 6266)

Narrated Ibn Abi Nu’m: A person asked `Abdullah bin `Umar whether a Muslim could kill flies. I heard him saying (in reply). “The people of IRAQ are asking about the killing of flies while they themselves murdered the son of the daughter of Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) . The Prophet (ﷺ) said, They (i.e. Hasan and Husain) are my two sweet basils in this world.” -(Sahih al-Bukhari 3753 )

The above narration says, those who killed the grandsons of the Prophet. And it goes without saying, the people of Iraq martyred the grandsons of the Prophet rather the people of Riyadh.

From all the above narrations, it’s quite evident and clear that “Najd” refers to Iraq not Saudi Arabia.

You can read 200 books a year, if you stop spending time on social media

by Charles Chu

Somebody once asked Warren Buffett about his secret to success. Buffett pointed to a stack of books and said,

Read 500 pages like this every day. That’s how knowledge works. It builds up. All of you can do it, but I guarantee not many of you will…

When I first found this quote of Buffett’s two years ago, something was wrong.

It was Dec. 2014. I’d found my dream job. Some days, I would be there, sitting at my dream job, and I would think, “My god what if I’m still here in 40 years? I don’t want to die like this…”

Something wasn’t right. I’d followed the prescription. Good grades. Leadership. Recommendations. College. Dream Job. I was a winner. I’d finished the race. Here I was in the land of dreams. But something was terribly, terribly wrong.

Every day, from my dream job desk, I looked out into their eyes. Empty, empty eyes.

There were no answers.

In January of 2015, I found Buffett’s quote. I decided to read. I was going to read and read and read and never stop until I got some damn answers.

I didn’t quite make 500 pages a day, but, in these last two years, I’ve read over 400 books cover to cover. That decision to start reading was one of the most important decisions in my life.

Books gave me the courage to travel. Books gave me the conviction to quit my job. Books gave me role models and heroes and meaning in a world where I had none.

I want to say reading 200 books a year is an amazing thing. But the truth is, it’s not. Anybody can do it.

All it takes is some simple math and the right tools.

Do not quit before you start

When average Joe hears the advice “Read 500 pages like this every day,” his snap reaction is to say, “No way! That’s impossible!”

Joe will then go on to make up reasons to justify his belief without doing any deep thinking at all. These might include “I’m too busy,” “I’m not smart enough,” or “Books just aren’t for me.”

But what if we go a little deeper? For example, what does it actually take to read 200 books a year? Two years ago, I stopped to do the simple math. Here’s what I found: Reading 200 books a year isn’t hard at all.

It’s just like Buffett says. Anyone can do it, but most people won’t.

Do the simple math

How much time does it take to read 200 books a year?

First, let’s look at two quick statistics:

  • The average American reads 200–400 words per minute (Since you’re on Medium, I’m going to assume you read 400 wpm like me)
  • Typical non-fiction books have ~50,000 words

Now, all we need are some quick calculations…

  • 200 books * 50,000 words/book = 10 million words
  • 10 million words/400 wpm = 25,000 minutes
  • 25,000 minutes/60 = 417 hours

That’s all there is to it. To read 200 books, simply spend 417 hours a year reading.

I know, I know. If your brain is like mine, it probably saw “417 hours” and immediately tried to shut off. Most people only work 40 hours a week! How can we possibly read for 417 hours?

Don’t let your monkey brain turn you away yet. Let’s do a quick reframe for what 417 hours really means…

Find the time

Wowsers, 417 hours. That sure feels like a lot. But what does 417 hours really mean? Let’s try to get some more perspective.

Here’s how much time a single American spends on social media and TV in a year:

  • 608 hours on social media
  • 1642 hours on TV

Wow. That’s 2250 hours a year spent on TRASH. If those hours were spent reading instead, you could be reading over 1,000 books a year!

Here’s the simple truth behind reading a lot of books: It’s not that hard. We have all the time we need. The scary part—the part we all ignore—is that we are too addicted, too weak, and too distracted to do what we all know is important…

All it takes to start reading a lot more is to take “empty time” spent Twitter-stalking celebrities or watching Desperate Housewives and convert some of it to reading time.

The theory is simple. It’s the execution that’s hard.

Execute

We all know reading is important. We all know we should do more of it. But we don’t. The main reason this happens is a failure to execute.

I’m not so perfect at it yet, but here are some tactics that have helped me get results.

I. Use environmental design

If you were quitting cocaine, would you keep it lying around the house? Of course not. Media is designed to be addictive. Moving away from media addiction can be as difficult as quitting drugs.

The biggest bang-for-buck changes here are environmental.

If you want to read, make sure (1) you remove all distractions from your environment and (2) you make books as easy to access as possible.

As an example, here’s my immediate environment:

I travel a lot. That doesn’t stop me from reading. The picture on the left is of my “bookshelf” in Thailand. I try to keep books everywhere so I can just pick one up and start reading.

The picture on the right is my smartphone desktop. Notice there are only two apps. One of them—the Kindle app—is for reading. The other is for habits… Which brings me to my next point.

II. Upload habits

Willpower is not a good tool for lifestyle change. It always fails you when you need it most. Instead of relying on strength of mind, build a fortress of habits—these are what will keep you resilient in tough times.

If you’re not familiar with habit science, my favorite book on the subject is Tynan’s Superhuman by Habit. It’s infinitely practical, and practical is all I care about.

Getting good at habit formation took me years. Many of the mistakes I made were avoidable. If I could go back, I’d find a habit coach. Here’s how I see it. One game-changing idea from a good book is worth thousands of dollars. If a coach helps you read ONE more good book a year, you already get your money’s worth.

(A shout out to Cherry Jeffs and Nathan Sudds, two coaches who have helped me out a lot.)

III. Go multi-medium

When it comes to reading, be a jack of all trades, not a specialist.

If your goal is to read more, you can’t be picky about where you read or what mediums you use. I read paper books. I read on my phone. I listen to audiobooks. And I do these things everywhere—on park benches, in buses, in the toilet… Wherever I can.

Make your reading opportunistic. If you have a chance, take it. If you don’t have a chance, find one.

I read a book one day and my whole life was changed.

Orhan Pamuk

If I hadn’t started reading, perhaps I’d still be at my dream job. Perhaps I’d still be at my desk, taking peeks at the clock and wondering if that was how I was going to die…

If you’re looking for answers, give reading a try. You may find much, much more than what you were looking for.

Congress demands Raja Singh to be kicked out of Assembly for refusing to take oath under MIM Pro-Tem speaker

Hyderabad – The Congress party has demanded on Tuesday that BJP MLA of Goshamahal Raja Singh to be kicked out of the state Assembly for refusing to take oath in front of the Pro-Tem Speaker Mumtaz Ahmed Khan of MIM party due to his religion.

Congress spokesperson, Dr Sravan Dasoju said, “Raja Singh’s statement shows the level of hatred that he holds against the Muslim community. He does not deserve to be a Member of the Legislative Assembly, which is a symbol of democracy and secularism. He must be expelled from the House forthwith”.

Sravan also pointed out that over 43 criminal cases are booked against Raja Singh for hate-speeches, but no action has been taken yet against him.

“Why Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao was preventing the police from taking action against the BJP MLA, who crossed all the limits? Why MIM president Asaduddin Owaisi was not using his influence over the Chief Minister to send Raja Singh behind the bars for his heinous utterances?” he asked.

Sravan asked that under the former rule of Congress Government in Hyderabad, Akbaruddin Owaisi was arrested for hate-speech in Nirmal, but no action has been taken against Raja Singh so far.

“There should be zero tolerance against people who spread hatred and communalism,” he added.

Sravan also demanded BJP National president Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narender Modi to banish Raja Singh from the BJP Party.

Buddhist Monk Swami Ananda becomes Sheikh Mohibullah

by Zahack Tanvir

He eventually decided to embrace Islam, and visited a Masjid in Chennai to take Shahdah that is ‘There is no god but Allah and Mohammed ﷺ is His slave and Messenger’.

“I am going to pick up a millionaire monk who has come in a shared auto-rickshaw at the AC Guards Chowrasta (cross roads)”, exclaimed Farooq bhai about the former Monk Swami Anandaji who was invited in Masjid-e-Rahmania – AC Guards – Hyderabad, around 14 years ago to narrate his how-he-found-Islam story.

We were eager to see a man who was once a millionaire monk with his disciples coming from all walks of life, from top-brass politicians to business tycoons were his devotees, women would throng his ‘ashram’ to get blessings. He had well-functioning ‘Ashrams’ in United states, and affluent politicians would make bee-line to know their future political career.

But this man today is dressed in a simple shirt and a trouser, with a handkerchief (to avoid irritation due to sweat), and wearing regular flip-flops.

There came a Tamil-to-Urdu translator, probably a fresh graduate from the Islamic seminary of Omarabad – Tamil Nadu.

The lecture began, and he traversed through his past and the kind of life he had. He confessed of how these god-men live under constant fear of losing devotees and the Police arriving at their doorstep to expose their crimes. Yes, the crimes they commit behind the curtains.

He confessed of exploiting hundreds of women who would come to him to seek blessing to cure infertility.

He narrated his failed prophesy of predicting 90-years of age to an Indian politician, but he passed away within a few days. Fearing the backlash from the family of the politician, he instructed his men to never allow anyone to visit him. But to his amazement politician’s family pleaded him to carry out his last rites as it was the final wish of the deceased.

He exhumed the fact of how people behave like sheep by blind-following these god-men despite their follies are evident.

Film-actors to politicians, businessmen to industrialists would leave millions of rupees at his feet in order to get his spiritual blessings.

[File photo of the article shows him with Ram Vilas Paswan]

He confessed of performing all these ‘miracles’ with the help of ‘Devtas’ which he now refers to as ‘Jinn’.

However, one day he was travelling all the way from America to Bhutan. His eyes fell on a Muslim man with a bottle of Zamzam water next to him at the Airport.

Swami Anandaji became curious as to why this man intends to carry such a big bottle of water in the flight. He could not resist his curiosity, so he became inquisitive.

The Muslim man narrated the story of Prophet Ibrahim peace be upon him and his wife Hajera peace be upon him, and his son Ismaeel peace be upon him, and how the archangel Jibraeel peace be upon him was ordered by Allah to let Zamzam water gush out at the feet of Prophet Ismaeel peace be upon him.

Swami Anandaji was struck with awe, for a simple water carries such an amazing story. He expressed interest in reading Quran in Bhutanese language, upon which the Muslim man promised to courier him a copy of Bhutanese Quran.

After reading Quran and the biography of Prophet Mohammed ﷺ, conflicting ideas were flowing through his mind. On one hand he had fame, glamor, wealth, women, and the status of god, which shall lead him to eternal hell-fire in the hereafter. On the other hand, he had to choose Allah and His Messenger and follow him till the last breath to achieve the eternal paradise.

He eventually decided to embrace Islam, and visited a Masjid in Chennai to take Shahdah that is ‘There is no god but Allah and Mohammed ﷺ is His slave and Messenger’.

No sooner he adopted Islam, a chain of trails was to hit him. Right-wing Saffron activists poured boiling water over him and hit his right eye with a spade. He was determined and firm to follow Islam, as the struggling stories of the companions of the Prophet Mohammed ﷺ kept him inspired.

When Saudi Arabia’s religious authority came to know about a god who became man, they sponsored his treatment and his Hajj pilgrimage.

He is now known as Shaikh Mohibullah (the one who loves Allah), and he has busied himself with the call to Tawheed (Monotheism) and Sunnah (Prophetic narrations), inviting people to Islam and its unchallenged teachings.

Shaykh Riyaz Moosa Malbari, a preacher from Kerala penned a book in Urdu on his life ‘Ek Khuda Insaan Bangaya’ – a god became man.

People like Shaikh Mohibullah stand as a great inspiration in the history of mankind, and a great man for many Muslims to look up to and mend their renegade life-style.

As Quran says, there is no compulsion in Islam, the choice remains with the god-men, to choose between hell and heaven.

King Abdulazeez never accepted British aid to fight Ottomans

by Asim Zahrani

“I will not fight against my brothers in faith.”

Britain calls upon the founder, King Abdulaziz – God’s mercy be on his soul – to fight against the Ottoman Empire, which was overthrown by “Ataturk”, the founder of the present Turkish state, and the hero and role model to Erdogan. Thus Britain offered King AbdulAziz the title of Caliph, power and both financial and military support, he denied, and stated in his rejection –
“I will not fight against my brothers in faith”.

Later on, Sharif Hussain of Makkah, the founder of Jordan, and the leader of the nationalist Arab revolution, has accepted the British offer.

King Abdulaziz shunned the Sharif of Makkah, which king Abdulaziz deemed atrocious and unforgivable.

The Sharif of Makkah response was to ban Abdulaziz and and all of the people under his Domain (Najd) from pilgrimage in 1924. This was the final straw which sparked the war between the Sharif Hussain of the Hashimits and King Abdulaziz of Alsaud.

A force of three thousand men took off from Najd (Mostly from the Otaibah tribe) and met with the Shareef’s regular army, which was dispatched from Taief.

The battle took place in Alhawiyah, in which after multiple unsuccessful raids and skirmishes, the Ikhwan forces of Alsaud managed to launch a powerful assult which forced the first lines of the Shareefs army to retreat, causing the rear ranks of the inexperienced troops to disorganize and retreat.

Sharif Hussain, seeing his army in full retreat from Taif, announced the resignation of his throne to his son Ali. This step did’t help the Hashimites and the troops left their stations, while disorganized,  Alikhwan forces of Abdulaziz managed to Enter Makkah in October 28, 1923 with little to no resistance after Sharif Hussain has already sailed to Akabah of Jordan,

King Abdulaziz entered Makkah wearing Ihram and people gave Bayah to him in December 17, 1923 which was the day the lands of Hijaz got included to the third reign of the kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

OPINION: How Iranian Mullah regime gets more into the chaos?

0

by Heshmat Alavi

Following Iran’s announcement of missiles tests under the pretext of “launching satellites” into space, the regime in Tehran is facing a new wave of political isolation.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo issued a statement in response: “The Iranian Regime’s Ministry of Defense has publicly announced plans to launch three Space Launch Vehicles (SLV) in the coming months. Such actions would once again demonstrate Iran’s defiance of UN Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 2231, which calls upon the Iranian regime not to undertake any activity related to ballistic missiles in order to avoid deeper economic and diplomatic isolation.”

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif responded in a tweet claiming, “Iran’s launch of space vehicles— & missile tests—are NOT in violation of Res 2231…”

Two months after the US launched new sanctions against the Iranian regime, Washington apparently intends to increase its political and economic pressures to compel Tehran into at least ending its adventurous policies.

Important details

Zarif’s remarks are nothing new, as the regime claims their missiles are for defensive purposes and do not bear the capability of delivering a nuclear payload. However, both the US and Europe are showing grave sensitivity in this regard and making contrast comments.

The missile ranges are key and upgrading these vehicles into delivering a nuclear warhead are an easy step. This subject becomes especially important when placed alongside threats made by senior Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) officials saying Iranian missiles now reach Europe.

Why the tests?

It is common knowledge that the Iranian regime is facing a conglomerate of crises as we speak. One particular issue, being Iran’s restive society and continuing protests, is of the utmost importance for the ruling regime, having severe impacts on their entire apparatus, especially more members of their ranks and files throwing in the towel.

Tehran’s clerics are now in dire need of what they describe as “hope therapy.” One such measure is through ballistic missiles and satellite launching vehicles to elevate diminishing spirits.

In regards to Iran’s nuclear program, the regime continues to claim this initiative is for peaceful purposes and/or medical isotopes, knowing a complete shutdown of their “civilian” nuclear program would be humiliating in the face of the “Great Satan.”

Inside Iran and abroad, it would be considered as the regime beginning to succumb to the 12-demands raised by Pompeo.

Not so easy

These adventurous measures, however, create certain issues in already tense relations between the Iranian regime and Europe.

While Tehran desperately continues effort to create a rift between the US and Europe, the Green Continent cannot overlook Tehran’s meddling in the Middle East, support for terrorism, ballistic missile tests and human rights violations, to some extent. Making things even more complicated is the position long adopted by Tehran, saying a step back on any of these issues will be the beginning of the end on all far more important subjects.

One such sign is the impasse Iran’s regime faces in regards to Europe’s “special purpose vehicle” initiative aimed at providing a mechanism to bypass US sanctions.

This subject has become so provocative for the European Union – especially considering Washington’s start opposition – that members of Iran’s Majlis (parliament) are heard claiming Tehran is not counting on the SPV!.

Seeing the matter becoming utterly embarrassing, Zarif has made similar remarks saying there was no economic objective in signing into the 2015 nuclear deal. It appears Zarif has forgotten how the Iranian regime went on a trade-signing rampage following the nuclear signing, including with companies such as AirBus, Boeing, Total and so forth.

Mehdi Mohammadi, described as an “expert in nuclear and international policy issues,” provided an interesting response after Zarif’s remarks raised quite a few eyebrows across the board.

“If we assume that Mr. Zarif was honest in his remarks, and these words were not the result of pressures from public opinion after the nuclear deal failed to provide economic fruit… this question comes to mind that if there were no economic/sanctions-lifting objectives involved in the nuclear deal, then what objective was the nuclear deal seeking?… Why did we even negotiate in the first place?”

Final thoughts

It is an undeniable fact that Iran’s regime is facing growing isolation, as the international community is coming to understand the clerics’ mortal weakness in the face of mushrooming protests.

Having no solutions, the Iranian regime is kicking the can down the road. 2019, with protests showing no signs of cooling and Washington determined to increase economic and diplomatic pressures, is promising to be a devastating period for Tehran.

Pompeo provided a preview in a recent interview with Newsmax: “The sanctions on Iran have the ultimate goal which we are trying to achieve. Creating an outcome where the Iranian people could have better lives than they have today under this tyrannical regime.”

Female devotees of Nepali “Buddha Boy” missing, godman under the Police radar

Kathmandu – A spiritual leader from Nepal believed to be “reincarnation of Buddha” has been arrested by Police over the charges of disappearance of his several devotees.

Ram Bahadur Bomjan (28), dubbed “Buddha Boy”, became famous in 2005 after followers said he could meditate motionless for months without water, food or sleep in Nepal’s deep forests.

The guru has a got a great following, but he has been accused of physical and sexual torture upon them.

Special police investigators have begun inquiries after the families of four of Bomjan’s devotees allegedly vanished from his ashrams.

“The police have started investigating these complaints against Bomjan,” Uma Prasad Chaturbedi, a spokesman for Nepal’s Central Investigation Bureau, told AFP.

“The investigation is in preliminary stage and we cannot share many details.”

Bomjan has long been dogged by accusations of abuse in deeply spiritual Nepal, even as thousands of worshippers queued for days to witness his so-called miracles of meditation deep in the jungle.

Thousands of worshipers gather in the deep forests for days to witness the so-called meditation influenced miracles.

In September last year, an 18-year-old nun accused the guru of raping her at one of his ashrams.

Dozens more have filed complaints against him alleging assault. The self-styled godman said he beat them for disturbing his meditation.

The Bodhi Shrawan Dharma Sangha, an organisation associated with the guru, recently slammed as baseless a series of fresh allegations made by a local website, Setopati.com, which published reports detailing cases of disappearances, sexual assault and violence in his ashrams.

India and Pakistan can sort out Kashmir issue without any external help, says Norwegian PM

New Delhi – The Norwegian Prime Minister on Monday said that India and Pakistan can mutually sort out the Kashmir issue without the help from outside.

Norway’s Prime Minister, Erna Solberg commented on Kashmir issue in Delhi that, “Both India and Pakistan are big enough countries…They can decrease tension between them without help from outside.”

She also made a mention about the controversial visit of the former Prime Minister of Norway – Kjell Magne Bondevik – to Kashmir.

“When it comes to his visit, he went as a private citizen. He has an institute for peace and security. It is a private institute in Norway. He

was invited. Our government’s policy is clear—if we are going to help someone, they have to ask for it,” Solberg said.

However, India’s External Affairs Minister, Shushma Swaraj explained that Indian Government didn’t organize Bondevik’s visit to Kashmir in November 2018.

Bondevik had paid a ‘surprise’ visit to the state and met top separatist leaders including Syed Ali Geelani and Mirwaiz Umer Farooq.

Solberg is on a three-day visit to India from January 7to 9, and she is scheduled to deliver the inaugural address at the Raisina Dialogue.
