Madrid – The Prince Talal International Prize for Human Development honored pioneering projects focused on protecting marine ecosystems during a ceremony held in Madrid.

The event recognized global initiatives aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 14, “Life Below Water,” emphasizing innovation in ocean preservation and sustainable marine practices.

The ceremony took place under the patronage of Queen Sofia, a member of the prize committee, who attended alongside Prince Abdulaziz bin Talal, chairman of the AGFUND board of directors and head of the prize committee.

Princess Haifa Al-Mogrin, Saudi Arabia’s ambassador to Spain, was also present, highlighting the international importance of the annual event.

During his remarks, Prince Abdulaziz bin Talal stated that meaningful development must rest on principles of justice, empowerment, and collaboration.

He explained that the Prince Talal International Prize was established to recognize outstanding initiatives and to encourage creativity in addressing human development challenges across the world.

He noted that this year’s winning projects demonstrate the power of innovative thinking in strengthening marine conservation.

He expressed appreciation to Spain for hosting this edition of the ceremony and congratulated the recipients for their contributions to safeguarding marine environments.

Prince Abdulaziz added that the awards come at a time when the global community is preparing for major international conferences on climate action, sustainable development, and development financing.

He said this moment places added responsibility on institutions, governments, and communities to promote solutions that support a more stable and environmentally resilient future.

Nasser Al-Kahtani, executive director of AGFUND, said the prize plays a vital role in the organization’s strategy to support programs linked to the United Nations development system.

He explained that the annual award helps identify and promote new models capable of advancing sustainable development goals and creating impactful, long-term solutions.

Al-Kahtani emphasized that the recognition encourages organizations and innovators to strengthen initiatives that address environmental challenges, particularly those relating to marine sustainability.

He highlighted the importance of collaborative frameworks that enable countries and communities to work together toward shared environmental objectives.

Committee member Signora Mercedes Menafra said the prize reflects the legacy of the late Prince Talal, whose development-driven vision continues to influence projects that uplift communities worldwide.

She noted that the fund’s ongoing work illustrates a commitment to supporting impactful programs that inspire practical, measurable improvements in human development.

Each year, the Prince Talal International Prize focuses on one of the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals, allowing participants to compete within a defined thematic area.

This approach ensures that the award remains aligned with global priorities while encouraging organizations to tackle urgent challenges through innovative concepts and community-driven strategies.

The prize carries a value of $1 million, awarded by AGFUND to support exceptional initiatives chosen through a rigorous evaluation process.

Winners are selected based on innovation, measurable impact, scalability, and the potential to strengthen sustainable development practices within their respective fields.

This year’s focus on “Life Below Water” highlights the increasing global concern over the health of oceans, coastal ecosystems, and marine biodiversity.

The winning projects reflect a wide range of solutions, from community-based marine conservation to advanced technologies designed to monitor ecosystems and reduce environmental harm.

The ceremony also underscored the importance of fostering global cooperation in marine sustainability, particularly as climate pressures continue to affect marine life and coastal communities.

Speakers emphasized that protecting the world’s oceans requires shared responsibility, knowledge exchange, and inclusive development strategies that prioritize long-term environmental wellbeing.

By recognizing creativity and encouraging innovative solutions, the Prince Talal International Prize reinforces the value of international partnerships in advancing sustainability goals.

Organizers expressed hope that the achievements honored this year will inspire further advancements and motivate new generations of innovators to develop impactful solutions for environmental challenges.

As the world moves toward more ambitious sustainability targets, the award remains a platform for spotlighting transformative work that contributes to global development.

Participants and attendees agreed that initiatives focused on marine protection are essential for ensuring healthier oceans, stronger ecosystems, and a more sustainable future for communities worldwide.
