Athens – Greece is taking significant steps to modernize and enhance its naval capabilities through the acquisition of four Bergamini-class frigates from Italy, Defence Minister Nikos Dendias announced on Monday. The move underscores Greece’s commitment to regional security, maritime stability, and strengthening NATO collaboration in the Mediterranean.

Following a high-level meeting with Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto in La Spezia, Greece and Italy signed memorandums of naval cooperation, paving the way for the purchase of two FREMM frigates immediately, with an option to acquire two additional vessels in the future. The agreement highlights the strong defense partnership between the two NATO allies and their shared interest in maintaining a secure maritime environment.

The frigate acquisition is part of a broader multi-year defense modernization plan, which includes the purchase of a fourth Belharra frigate from France and advanced new submarines.
