After about 20 armed individuals allegedly attacked those who were giving prayers and vandalised a mosque the previous day, Sandal Kalan village in Haryana’s Sonepat district was tense on Monday, according to the police.
While three people have been arrested, six have been detained.
The alleged incident, according to Sonepat police commissioner B Satheesh Balan, occurred at about 9 p.m. on Sunday while worshippers were saying prayers inside the mosque that was “community funded.”
While three people have been arrested, six have been detained.
The incident left nine persons hurt, and they were all treated at the Sonepat civil hospital. Two of them were eventually released, but the others were sent to the district’s Bhagat Phool Singh Medical College for Women in Khanpur Kalan.
“The accused entered the mosque without warning and began throwing insults. They used sticks and other sharp objects to harm us. Women and children were not spared. This is an effort to polarise the community. Sabir Ali, one of the injured people, said, “We respect all religion and have never seen such an incident in the hamlet before.
According to the police, the arrests were made based on CCTV footage that showed the accused walking around near the mosque while carrying bamboo sticks.
According to Baland, 18 named individuals and other unidentified individuals were the targets of a FIR for hurting religious emotions. Punit, Sumit, and Harbir, three of the defendants, have been placed on 24-hour police remand. Strict action would be taken against the culprits, and the families of the injured will be given security, he said.
Both communities have requested police to take stern punishment against the culprits, he continued, adding that “nearly 70 cops have been deployed in the village to maintain peace.”
On Monday night, members of both communities held a panchayat and decided to work to reestablish peace.
Five persons were detained on March 31 in Sonepat’s Kharkhoda neighbourhood for reportedly raising a saffron flag atop a mosque.
