OIC chief meets in New York with foreign ministers

Date:

Riyadh – Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Hissein Brahim Taha, recently held several significant meetings during his attendance at the 78th session of the UN General Assembly in New York. One notable meeting took place between Taha and Pakistan’s Foreign Minister, Jalil Abbas Jilani.

The discussions between the two officials primarily focused on strengthening the relations between the OIC and Pakistan. They also delved into crucial topics on the OIC agenda, including the Palestinian issue, the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, and joint efforts to combat Islamophobia. Foreign Minister Jilani expressed his appreciation for the OIC’s pivotal role in advocating for these causes.

In a separate meeting, Taha engaged in talks with Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen. During this encounter, Rasmussen informed Taha about Denmark’s proposal to introduce a legislation that would criminalize the desecration of holy books.

Taha reaffirmed the OIC’s position on acts such as the burning and desecration of the Holy Qur’an, as previously outlined in the decision made during the 18th extraordinary session of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers. Taha emphasized the OIC’s call for relevant countries to implement measures aimed at preventing the recurrence of such behavior. He also commended Denmark for taking this step.

Furthermore, Taha met with Iran’s Foreign Minister, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, to discuss enhancing cooperation between the OIC and Iran. They explored strategies to strengthen joint Islamic efforts and addressed various matters of mutual concern, including the Palestinian cause, the situation in Afghanistan, and the OIC’s initiatives to combat Islamophobia.

The series of meetings held by Secretary-General Taha underscore the OIC’s commitment to fostering partnerships, addressing critical issues affecting the Muslim world, and promoting unity among member states. These discussions pave the way for concerted efforts in seeking resolutions to pressing challenges and advancing the interests of the OIC and its member countries.
