Chennai — A newly married woman and three family members drowned in a reservoir while posing for a selfie in the south-Indian state of Tamil Nadu earlier this week.
20-year-old new-bride V. Nivedha, and her 24-year-old husband G. Perumalsamy both from Krishnagiri district were married in September, and were visting their relatives in Uthangarai in Tamil Nadu state over the weekend, India’s Hindu Newspaper reported.
The couple along with Perumalsamy’s 20-year-old sister Yuvarani and three other siblings—Santosh (14), Sneha (18), and Kanniga (19) were posing for a selfie in the water upto the waist near Pambar Dam.
Within no time, Santosh slipped into an underwater pit, and dragged Yuvarani, Sneha, Kanniga, and Nivedha along with him
Perumalsamy could manage to pull his sister Yuvarani out but the remaining people drowned.
The bodies were taken out and sent for the forensic investigations at Uthangarai Government Hospital.
India accounted for around half of the 259 selfie fatalities reported from October 2011 to November 2017, according to a study by researchers associated with the All India Institute of Medical Sciences last year, whose findings were published in the Journal of Family Medicine and Primary Care.
Drowning, transport deaths and falls were the top causes of deaths linked to selfies, according to the study.
