UK Charges Man Under Iran-Linked National Security Laws

LONDON-British police on Friday charged a 39-year-old man with offenses related to allegedly assisting Iran’s intelligence service, marking the latest case under the United Kingdom’s national security legislation amid heightened concerns over suspected Iranian-linked activity.

Police identified the suspect as Vahid Aberi, of Liverpool in northwest England. He was taken to a police station in central England, while investigators carried out searches at properties in Birmingham and Liverpool as part of the inquiry.

The charges come as British security agencies continue to warn that Iran has sought to use criminal proxies to conduct hostile activities inside the United Kingdom.

Authorities said they had not identified any direct threat to a specific individual or community arising from the investigation. However, counterterrorism officials said they were increasingly required to intervene to disrupt suspected operations linked to foreign intelligence services.

Helen Flanagan, head of Counter Terrorism Policing in London, said investigators had seen a sustained increase in the pace of national security investigations in recent years.

The case follows a series of developments that have heightened tensions between London and Tehran. According to the supplied material, Britain has experienced several antisemitic attacks linked to Iran since the outbreak of the U.S.-Iran conflict.

Earlier this week, the British government announced a ban on support for Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, using newly introduced powers intended to combat activities carried out by state-backed proxy networks.

Last week, the British government summoned Iran’s most senior diplomat in London following the stabbing of an Iranian journalist in the British capital. Two Romanian nationals were subsequently convicted in connection with the attack.

Iran’s embassy in London has previously rejected accusations that Tehran poses a threat to Britain, describing such allegations as unfounded, politically motivated and hostile.

Police said Aberi is scheduled to appear before a London court later on Friday.

The investigation forms part of broader efforts by British authorities to address suspected foreign state activity under strengthened national security powers introduced to counter espionage and related offenses.
