Deadly Tank Misfire in Japan Kills Three During Military Drill
Tokyo— Three soldiers were killed and one injured on Tuesday after a tank’s ammunition misfired during a military exercise at a training ground in Japan’s southwestern Oita region, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said, describing the incident as a rare and regrettable accident under investigation.
The explosion occurred inside the tank during a drill conducted by Japan’s Self-Defense Forces, resulting in the deaths of the three crew members on board and injuries to another individual, according to official statements.
Takaichi expressed condolences following the incident, stating that the government would work to determine the cause of the malfunction. “It is truly regrettable this happened,” she said, offering “heartfelt condolences” to the families of the victims.
Authorities have not disclosed further technical details regarding the nature of the misfire, and an investigation is ongoing to establish whether the incident stemmed from mechanical failure, human error, or issues related to ammunition handling.
Fatal accidents involving military equipment are relatively uncommon in Japan, where the Self-Defense Forces operate under strict safety protocols. The incident is expected to prompt scrutiny of training procedures and equipment maintenance standards.
The training ground in Oita is routinely used for exercises involving armored units, though officials have not indicated whether similar drills will be suspended pending the outcome of the investigation.
