Saudi FM demands apology from Canada for harsh tweet and demands equal rights for Canadian Indians

0

New York – Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir responded strongly and demanded Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland on Wednesday to release an immediate apology for accusing the Kingdom of treating it citizens as “a banana republic.”

At an event at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York he said: “What are we? A banana republic? Would any country accept this?”

“You owe us an apology. It is very easy to fix — apologize, say you made a mistake,” he added.

Responding to the rumors that both the countries will reach an easy resolution, Jubeir said that Saudi Arabia’s stance in the dispute remains the same, and that Canada did not change its stance either.

He expressed clearly, “In Canada we became a political football. Find another ball to play with, not Saudi Arabia.”

Jubeir also said that US, UK, and Germany have criticized Saudi Arabia in the past over several issues but never made such demands which Canada has done.

He demanded Canada to declare Quebec independent and grant equal rights to the Canadian Indians.

“It is outrageous from our perspective that a country will sit there and lecture us, and make demands,“ Jubeir said.

Saudi Arabia had frozen new trade with Canada and expelled the Canadian ambassador in retaliation for Canada’s call to free the arrested terror suspects. Later it ended all educational and medical programs in Canada yb relocating millions of Saudi students and patients to other countries.

Adultery no more a Crime in India as Supreme Court annuls Section 497

0

New Delhi – Supreme Court on Thursday anulled the Section 497 (Adultery Law) of the Indian Penal court which gives rights to a man to prosecute his wife’s lover. The adulterer will be jailed for five-years if found guilty.

A five-judge Constitution Bench led by Chief Justice Misra termed the 158-years old law of criminalising adultery as “absolutely, manifestly arbitrary and unconstitutional”.

However, Adultery will remain a ground for divorce, the bench added.

“Husband is not the master,” Chief Justice Misra observed.

Justice Rohinton F. Nariman said Section 497  is based on a chauvnistic notion. This is clear from the fact that the cuckolded husband’s connivance removes the element of criminality in an adulterous relationship.

Justice D.Y. Chandrachud championed the sexual autonomy of women within marriage.

Partners in marriage should have respect for each other’s sexual autonomy, Justice Chandrachud observed.

Justice Indu Malhotra, reading her opinion the last on the Bench, held that Section 497 based on the Doctrine of Coverture, which holds that a woman loses her identity and legal right with marriage, is violative of her fundamental rights. This doctrine is not recognised by the Constitution.

The judgment comes on a petition filed by a Kerala based man, Joseph Shine, represented by advocates Kaleeswaram Raj and M.S. Suvidutt, seeking a declaration of Section 497 as unconstitutional.

0

A 17th-century mosque in India’s historic city of Hyderabad, which is said to have been built with granite and bricks brought from Mecca in Saudi Arabia, is undergoing restoration to restore its pristine glory.

The Makkah Masjid stands meters away from the city’s defining landmark, the Charminar. The restoration is being done to conserve the mosque’s splendid structure. Chandeliers from the high roof have been fully wrapped using pieces of cloth while the tall minarets of the mosque has been covered with scaffolding.

The mosque is said to have been built with granite and bricks brought from Mecca in Saudi Arabia.

A team from Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) started the restoration work more than a year ago and it is likely to take some more time to complete. The ASI had last worked on Makkah Masjid in 2007 under a special arrangement since 1956.

According to Telangana Tourism, “The construction of Makkah mosque started in the year 1614 by Sultan Muhammad Qutb Shah and it was Aurangzeb who completed it in 1693. The mosque has a length of 225 feet and is 180 feet wide with a height of 75 feet. The roof is rested on 15 arches.”

A team from Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) started the restoration work more than a year ago.

The mosque has two huge octagonal columns, created from a single piece of granite and topped by an arched gallery crowned by a dome. The mosque can accommodate 10,000 worshipers at any time. It is believed that bricks used for its construction where also brought from Makkah.

It is said that the fifth Sultan of Qutb Shahi dynasty, Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah, was a great patron of art and culture.

The mosque has two huge octagonal columns, created from a single piece of granite.

Makkah Masjid was under construction when renowned French traveler of the 17th-century, Jean-Baptiste Tavernier, traveled to Hyderabad. “It is about 50 years since they began to build a splendid pagoda in the town which will be the grandest in all India when it is completed.”

Qutb Shah is known to have personally laid the foundation stone of the mosque, while 8,000 workers were part of its construction. The three arched facades were carved out of a single piece of granite, which took five years to quarry.

Every year before the commencement of Ramadan, authorities set in process annual maintenance work to provide a facelift to the mosque. However, the ongoing work is a major exercise and is expected to beautify the mosque as well.

The people Hyderabad are hoping that the work will get completed sooner than later.

FORGOTTEN TERROR: King Leopold II mutilated and massacred Black Slaves of Congo

0

Belgium is not the first European country we think of when we hear the words “blood-soaked tyranny.” Historically, the little country has always been more famous for beer than epic crimes against humanity.

But there was a time, at the peak of European imperialism in Africa, when Belgium’s King Leopold II ran a personal empire so vast and cruel, it rivaled – and even exceeded – the crimes of even the worst 20th century dictators.

This empire was known as the Congo Free State and Leopold II stood as its undisputed slave master. For almost 30 years, rather than being a regular colony of a European government the way South Africa or the Spanish Sahara were, Congo was administered as the private property of this one man for his personal enrichment.

This world’s largest plantation was 76 times the size of Belgium, possessed rich mineral and agricultural resources, and had lost perhaps half of its population by the time the first census counted only 10 million people living there in 1924.

Nothing about Leopold II’s youth suggested a future mass murderer. Born the heir to Belgium’s throne in 1835, he spent his days doing all of the things a European prince would be expected to do before ascending to the throne of a minor state: learning to ride and shoot, taking part in state ceremonies, getting appointed to the army, marrying an Austrian princess, and so on.

King Leopold II

Leopold II took the throne in 1865 and he ruled with the kind of soft touch Belgians expected from their king in the wake of the multiple revolutions and reforms that had democratized the country over the preceding few decades. Indeed, the young King Leopold really only ever put pressure on the senate in his (constant) attempts to get Belgium involved in building an overseas empire like all the bigger countries had.

This became an obsession for Leopold II. He was convinced, like most statesmen of his time, that a nation’s greatness was directly proportional to the amount of lucre it could suck out of equatorial colonies, and he wanted Belgium to have as much as possible before other countries came along and tried to take it.

First, in 1866, he tried to get the Philippines from Queen Isabella II of Spain. However, his negotiations collapsed when Isabella was overthrown in 1868. That’s when he started talking about Africa.
Child Amputees

In 1878, Henry Stanley presumed to meet Dr. Livingstone deep inside the Congo rain forest. The international press made both men out to be heroes – bold explorers in the heart of darkest Africa. What went unsaid in the breathless newspaper accounts of the two men’s famous expeditions is what they were doing in the Congo in the first place.
