MYTH-BUSTED: Ottoman Caliphate was revolted by Mohammed bin Saud and his Shaykh Mohammed bin Abdulwahab

It’s commonly spread misconception that Shaykh Mohammed bin Abdulwahab and the first Saudi ruler Mohammed bin Saud rebelled and revolted against the Ottoman Empire to demolish the Caliphate. And this has been used over the ages by Muslim Brotherhood (Ikhwanul-Muslimeen) propagandists and the Jihadi organizations to justify their revolts and protests.

Following are the excerpts of famous Scholars who debunked the myth, and clarified the matter from verified historical perspective.

When Shaykh Abdulaziz bin Abdullah bin Baz was asked about the matter, he replied.

Shaykh Muhammad bin Abdulwahab did not rebel against the Ottoman Caliphate state – as far as I know and believe. There was no governmental control or authority for the Turks over Najd.

Najd was made up of small emirates and scattered villages and upon every town or village – no matter how small they were – was an independent leader…there were emirates which had battles, wars and disputes.

Shaykh Muhammad bin AbdulWahab did not rebel against the Ottoman state, but he rebelled against the evil situation in his area, so he strove truly for the sake of Allaah and was patient and persevered until the light of the Dawah spread to other towns. — Nadwa Jadeed al-Fikr al-Islaami in the University of King Saud 1402 A.H.

When Shaykh Salih al-Fawzan was asked that, some of the people, those enemies to the Dawah of Shaykh ul Islaam Muhammad bin AbdulWahab say that Shaykh ul Islaam and the Imam Muhammad bin Saud rebelled against the rule of the leader of the Ottoman state and that they split away from Najd is the central area of mid Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Riyadh etc. obedience and this is against the creed of the Ahl ul Sunnah wal Jammah what is your opinion about this statement?

He replied.

Does this person who says this statement adhere to hearing and obeying the leader?! Most of those who say this statement hold the opinion of rebelling against leaders nowadays, and they do not adhere or acknowledge the authority of the leaders, this is one aspect.

The second aspect is that Shaykh Muhammad bin AbdulWahab and Imam Muhammad bin Saud did not rebel against the leader at their time because the Ottoman state did not have authority over the area of Najd but the area of Najd was in the hands of their leaders.

Every area from the lands of Najd had an independent leader which it would rule over. When one of them would pass away then one of his sons or relatives would take over after him, therefore, the Ottomans did not have authority over the area of Najd.

The Ottoman state did not give importance to the Najd area because there was no produce there at that time and there was no importance paid to it. The Ottomans fought against the Saudi state, however, they did not fight them because they rebelled, but rather they fought against the Saudi state out of fear of them.

Therefore, they fought against the Saudi state fearful of them, when their ability and matter had become great and their command became apparent, the Ottoman state feared them and fought against them. They feared them, and that is why they fought them, that the Saudi state may war against them in their own land, this is the purpose, otherwise they had no authority over the land of Najd.

The land of Najd was in the hands of its leaders and rulers, generation after generation until Shaykh Muhammad bin AbdulWahab came with the Dawah and Muhammad bin Saud aided him and extended out their authority over all of the Najd area and other areas of the Arabian peninsula and Allaah established them firmly because they undertook the Dawah of Muhammad peace be upon him and spread Islaam and all the emirates of Najd which were previously spread out over Najd entered under one authority, then at that time the Ottoman state feared that they would reach their land and the land of Iraq and the land of Shaam so they feared for themselves.

They also had major deviancies and they had tombs and shrines, so they feared for what they were upon. They were upon Soofeeyah and Bida’ so they feared the Dawah of the Shaykh will change them, that is why they fought against the Saudi state.

When the similar question was asked to Shaykh Saleh Alaa Shaykh that, what is your opinion about the one who says that Shaykh Muhammad bin AbdulWahab rebelled against the Ottomans, how do we refute them?

He replied.

The answer is from two angles: The first angle: It is as I mentioned to you, Najd at the time of the Shaykh was not under the authority of the Ottomans, but rather, Najd from the year 260 A.H. was not subject to their authority, not to the authority of the Abbasids or to any other authority, Najd was independent.

Some of the Khawarij tried to overcome the people of Najd from that early time and likewise a group from the people of Yemen etc. This means the people of Najd were independent and did not enter under obedience at that time.

The people of Najd were divided and did not force their people and did not surrender to giving Baya [oath of allegiance] but they were independent.

When the Ottoman state appeared every area of Najd had its own leader, so it was not subjugated under the Ottoman state because when this state first established itself, it was upon correct Islaam then after that it became deviated.

When the Shaykh [Muhammad bin AbdulWahhab] came the people were upon this condition that every area had a leader, they did not acknowledge the authority of Bani Uthmaan in contrast to al-Ahsa and the eastern provinces since these people acknowledged the authority of the Ottomans.

The leader of al-Ahsa and places like that were under the leadership of the Ottomans. Likewise, the Ashraaf [the rulers of Makkah] and those similar to them had a type of independency, but they were under the general authority of the Ottomans, as for Najd it was independent, and that is one angle.

The second aspect is that in the time of the Shaykh the Ottomans were calling to Shirk al-Akbar (major Shirk), Soofi paths and they would get the 8 people to love that. They would spend wealth upon the graves and the worship of them and spend lots of money upon that. Therefore, from this aspect if Najd was under their authority they still would not be under their obedience because they called to Shirk and they consolidated this in their last treaties.

As for the first two hundred years the Ottomans were upon the correct methodology and generally, they were good, but when it came to approximately the year 1100 A.H. and after that, when there occurred a lot of Shirk among the Muslims, the Ottomans were from those who completely aided this Shirk and spent wealth upon it.

There are statements of the Ottoman Caliphs – as was the title widely given to them – statements from the leaders of the Bani Uthmaan who wrote supplications about seeking deliverance and rescue with the Messenger peace be upon him and seeking deliverance and rescue with the Awaaliyaa etc.

The first aspect is that which is dependable as I mentioned, the second aspect is a derivation of the first.” —
Sharh Kitab Thalaat al-Asool, by Shaykh ul Islaam al-Imam the reviver Muhammad bin AbdulWahab atTameemi p.36-37

He further said.

The answer is, that this is not correct, because Najd from the year 256 A.H. was outside the rule of the Abbasid Zaydeeyah. It was out of their jurisdiction and the Abbasid state from the outset did not have any desire for it.

The Abbasids did not send anyone to the people of Najd due to what occurred in the Najd, from disunion and separation, and differences and weakness, because there was no need of Najd at that time. Then the Emirates and states came in to power but they did not request the people of Najd to enter under their authority.

The Najd had emirates and states independent from the year 256 A.H. and then around the year 500 A.H. came the end of the ‘Akhdareeyah’ state, then after that states came in to power or very small states. Every time a person established a garden or farm and people gathered around it, there occurred a leader of the state and village etc.

Then came the Imam of Dawa, Shaykh Muhammad bin AbdulWahab during these circumstances, which is that the states in Najd did not have a connection with the Ottoman state, but the Ottoman state did not give them wealth to spend upon them.

Also, the Ottoman state did not request taxes from the leaders of Najd, nor did they request them to give Baya etc. but rather Najd was abandoned due to them not having a desire for it, there was no wealth there and there was no desire for its people, but Najd was small separated areas. Shaykh Muhammad bin AbdulWahab came during this circumstances, where there was a leader of Uyainah, a leader over Huraymalah, a leader over alJubaylah, a leader over Dareeyah, a leader over Riyadh, a leader over Kharj etc. 10 each area had an independent emirate and independent authority, so he gave Dawa at this time.” —

Iran converting poor Syrians to Shiism in return for money and food

0

As a result of the Syrian regime’s arrest of a number of young men newly joined to the Iranian-backed militias, clashes broke out between the Assad forces and these militias in the town of Mayadin in rural Deir al-Zour province last Saturday, which the latter considered harmful to its policy in the region, representing in expending Shi’ite doctrine in rural suburbs of the province and recruiting young guys in the militias.
This came on the backdrop of arresting some recently recruited young men in such militias by the Syrian regime.

According to the network “Deir al-Zour 24” that the regime forces raided the homes of four young men recently joined the militias associated with Iran, arrested them and seized their weapons, on the grounds that the lawsuits filed against them by the people; which angered the militias and considered such actions threats against Iran’s policies to encourage young people to return to Deir al-Zour .

After the militias directly linked to Iran gained control over large parts of the eastern regions of Syria, especially Deir al-Zour, they began building Shiite shrines, welcoming Shi’ite pilgrims from Iraq and Iran, and opening recruitment offices.

Deir al-Zour, Aid and food versus Shiism

An Iranian delegation arrived in the city of Mayadin in the eastern suburb of Deir al-Zour on Monday to demand that its population be under Shiism in return for money and aid. Local sources confirmed that the delegation included Iranian and Iraqi personalities accompanied by an interpreter and met dignitaries during their visit to the city. They called on people to join their doctrine for sums of money and assistance to families that will do so, taking advantage of poverty and poor living conditions suffered by people in general.

The delegation tried to convince the people to look for their children to return to the city and to join the Iranian militias in return for settling their situation and not to pursue them. This is what happened as many young people began to return to the city despite they had been involved in fightings previously against the regime, either through working with the protection YPG militia or fighting at the beginning of the revolution .
Iran seeks by recruiting young people, to form a local army that would be the alternative force if it decides to withdraw from Syria in a scenario similar to what is happening in Lebanon. Tehran has military forces loyal to it under the name “Hezbollah” and through which it manages the region.

The Iranian-backed “Iraqi Popular Mobilization” militias began converting tombs and places in Deir al-Zour into Shiite shrines a few months ago. It has reconstructed the “dome of Ali” in the town of “Suwayyah” and became a shrine as they claimed that this very shrine represents Ali Bin Abi Taleb’s place of setting. Suhail Al-Hassan-led militia have built another shrine called “Ain Ali” in the city of Qouriya, in addition to the Husayniyat (Shiit worshiping places) in the towns of Hittila and Marat.

Months ago, the militias brought in about 50 Iranian families and gave them homes in the central district and near the Basri office in the town of Al-Mayadin in the eastern suburb of Deir al-Zour. This is similar to what happened in the cities of Darya and Muadamyat Al-Sham.

Iran’s plan: a “southern suburb” in Syria

A report by the Washington Institute for Studies on Iran’s efforts to establish a geographical control zone in Syria similar to Hezbollah’s stronghold in the southern suburb of Beirut through its penetration of all military, political, economic, religious and cultural levels.

The report says that there are two tracks for the Iranian penetration in Syria, the first is the purchase of real estate and changing the country’s demographics, and the second to attract poor communities and the implementing of religious and economic programs, which may not be ideologically compatible with Tehran, but lack of viable alternatives.

The report pointed out that Iran has worked in 2018 to make systematic and planned demographic changes to secure the city of Damascus and its environs and the area stretching from the shrine of “Sayyida Zeinab” to the Lebanese border. The Sunni communities were expelled from their homes long ago and replaced by loyalists. Hezbollah and Iran’s Revolutionary Guard took advantage of Law No. 10 issued by the regime and bought properties from their owners who are unable to return home at all.

The report argues that Iran sought to ensure a multi-generational presence in Syria by influencing the educational aspect and opening sections taught in Persian in many educational institutions, including the universities of Damascus, Homs and Lattakia, and providing incentives to those affiliated with these programs in order to increase their demand, such as exemption from university fees , free trips to Tehran and others, as well as language schools and institutes for those below the university level who are also receiving incentives.

Shiism reaches the southern regions

After the regime’s control of the entire southern region of Syria, the Iranian-backed militias began to expand their activity of Shi’ism and youth recruitment. In Daraa, Hizballah opened recruiting offices, particularly in the eastern countryside. Young people were enticed to salaries ranging from $ 200 to $ 350 for those who are over 18 years old. They are recruited and taken to the Izzarah area and subjected to “religion” courses in Shiism. Similar reports suggest that the number of trainers involved in Iranian militias exceeds 1800.

In the city of Zabadani, the militia has renovated several mosques and turned them to Shiite shrines, including “Mahatta mosque” and “Al-Zahra castle” in the western neighborhood, in addition to “al-Ghufran mosque” on the Zabadani – Sargaya road.

In addition to joining people in Shiism, they are working on recruiting young people and Iran began to spread habits in Syrian societies, most notably the Mut’ah marriage. Several offices were opened in the districts of Aleppo governorate to implement this kind of marriage. The first two cases of such marriage were officially announced in Aleppo in July 2018 and in Deir al-Zour in December of the same year.

The Libarasion French newspaper highlighted the deployment of Iran for the marriage of pleasure (Mu’tah) in Aleppo, based on contracts for a period of 15 days compared to 100 thousand pounds as a dowry, and then the newspaper pointed out that the contracts are signed under the supervision of a specialized agency.

This type of marriage exempts the father from recognizing his children and deprives the wife of the right to housing and inheritance and considers adultery to be a temporary contract in contrast to the right marriage.

EXPOSED: Bollywood celebs demand money for promoting political parties on social media

Investigative platform Cobrapost on Tuesday claimed to have exposed 36 Bollywood personalities who agreed to promote for a fee any specified political party on their social media accounts ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

Appearing to represent a fictitious Public Relations agency, undercover Cobrapost reporters approached several actors, singers, stand-up comedians and dancers with lucrative offers of quick money, ranging from more than ₹2 lakh, for promoting political parties through their accounts on various social media platforms. Some of the celebrities, having lakhs of followers on social media, sought as much as ₹50 lakh per message, according to the report.

However, four of those who were approached refused the offer straight away.

Cobrapost Editor Aniruddha Bahal said the sting operation was conducted last year and it took some time to release it after the post-production work.

“Most of them were willing to accept the bulk of their fee in cash, which in other words means black money,” Cobrapost said in a statement. “Celebs would tweak the content on various issues to be provided to them before posting the same on their social media profiles to make it look as their own… they agreed to send us their PAN and banking details, and many actually did so. They swore to keep the entire exercise a secret, and the agenda hidden,” the online news organisation said.

While some actors proposed that they would indirectly promote the political party in their press briefings during the promotion of a film or an event, others even offered to post videos on social media and make them go viral with the help of their followers.

“The party in question was, in most of the cases, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Congress Party in some cases,” Cobrapost said. “The names of political parties were used, in good faith and public interest, for narrative purpose only, and this is not an insinuation of their actual involvement in the practice. The investigation was made to expose the celebs willing to endorse a political agenda in return for monetary gains,” it said.

Mr. Bahal asserted that the report highlighted the need for the Election Commission to frame guidelines to regulate proxy campaigning by celebrities on social media by making such activity an offence on the lines of paid news and put in place a mechanism to monitor it.

“Or, they are asked to affix a disclaimer saying it is an advertisement to make their followers aware of their motive,” he suggested. — The Hindu

Pakistan bans Hafez Saeed’s Jamat-ud-Dawah and its charity organization

Islamabad — The terror outfit Jamat-ud-Dawah (JuD) led by Hafiz Saeed, has been banned by the new Pakistan Government under Imran Khan, along with its child-organization Falah-e-Insaniat, Ministry of Interior stated.

The outright decision came out when this week Saudi Arabia and Pakistan have made alliance to combat terrorism, and to stop every terror-funding channel.

Also, Saudi Arabia promised India to de-escalate the rising tensions between India and Pakistan.

“It was decided during the meeting to accelerate action against proscribed organisations,” a statement later issued by the Ministry of Interior read.

“It was further decided that Jamat-ud-Dawa and Falah-e-Insaniat Foundation be notified as proscribed organizations by the Ministry of Interior,” the statement added.

The two organizations have been on the hit-list of Interior Ministry, despite JuD ran for general elections last year under it’s child-organization “Allahu Akbar Tehreek”. Unfortunately, it could not sustain a single seat, while Saeed himself led the campaigns amd election rallies.

Saudi Arabia backs UN Resolution for Kashmir, conflict can be resolved amicably, says Saudi FM

Kashmir Saudi Foreign Minister reiterated on Wednesday in a Televised interview that Kingdom supports United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions to resolve Kashmir’s dispute between India and Pakistan, and both countries should initiate talks to preserve Kashmiri interest.

“We have said there are UN resolutions with regard to Kashmir that Saudi Arabia supports,” the 57-year-old Saudi FM, Adel al-Jubeir, said to India Today TV.

He spoke in favor of Kashmiris and said that the Kingdom has always backed the two countries to sit at the negotiating table and resolve the conflict amicably.

“We believe where there is good will and honest dialogue a resolution to this issue can be achieved,” he enthused.

However, he politely refused to comment without knowledge on whether Pakistan has been responsible for “cross border terrorism”, “I am not aware of that”—he politely declined.

During the Crown Prince’s visit to India, he promised to cordinate with India in intelligence sharing and combatting extremism that has posed threat to both the nations.

People want Kashmir but not Kashmiris—situation is depressing, Chidambaram breaks silence

New Delhi – Senior Congress leader P Chidambharam broke his silence on Thursday and expressed that “some people want Kashmir to be part of India but don’t want Kashmiris to be part of Indians. He exuded that the irony of the situation is depressing.

He also condemned Meghalaya Governor Tathagata Roy’s hateful statements that called for the boycott of Kashmiri products.

“The irony of the situation is depressing. We want Kashmir to be part of India, but we do not want Kashmiris to be part of Indians,” he said in a tweet.

Chidambaram said the ‘Statue of Unity’, the 182 metre statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, located near Sardar Sarovar Dam in Gujarat, watches over the governor of Meghalaya and others who seem to think that Kashmiris have no place in India.

Sporadic incidents of threats to kashmiri traders and students across Dehrahun, Jammu, Kolkata and Muzaffarnagar have been reported.

The unfortunate incidents began to unfold after over 49 CRPF personnel were killed by a deadly suicide bomb by a Jaish’s terrorist.

BRAVO:The Kashmiri teenager who helped stranded Kashmiri students after Pulwama

by Betwa Sharma

If you’ve been following the news about the forced expulsion of Kashmiri students from Uttarakhand in the aftermath of the Pulwama attack last week, chances are that you have read about Khawaja Itrat.

The 21-year-old Kashmiri has been quoted in several Indian publications and the Washington Post, giving facts and figures about the number of students arriving at the shelter he set up in Chandigarh on Sunday.

While speaking with HuffPost India, during the course of the week, Itrat sounded frenetic, yet upbeat. “We have managed to arrange two buses to get the students out from Dehradun. This is good news,” he said on Tuesday.

These brief conversations always ended with him saying, “Ma’am, I’m very sorry but things are too busy right now. I promise to call you back.”

The mechanical engineering student, who founded the Jammu and Kashmir Student Organisation (JKSO) in 2017, was fielding 300 calls a day.

His organisation, he estimates, evacuated 700 to 800 students from Uttarakhand over five days.

How it started

On 14 February, a 19-year-old Kashmiri, Adil Ahmed Dar, rammed a vehicle filled with explosives into a convoy of security personnel, killing 49 soldiers in the Pulwama district. It was the deadliest attack on Indian security forces in Kashmir in nearly three decades.

As reports of the attack came in, and the death toll kept rising, Itrat braced himself for a backlash against Kashmiris. But he did not anticipate that hundreds of students would be forced to flee their hostels and rented accommodations in different parts of the country.

It was a few hours after the horrific attack in Pulwama that Itrat started receiving phone calls from students, who said that right-wing activists were threatening them and forcing their landlords to evict them within 24 hours. Many students, he said, hid inside their rooms and asked their landlords to put a lock on the door.

The cost of plane tickets to Srinagar skyrocketed and Jammu was under curfew. They were stuck.

The next day, JKSO released a helpline number and asked students to make their way to Chandigarh, which was relatively safe.

Itrat said that he asked Kashmiris living in Chandigarh to make room for the students arriving from Uttarakhand. “There were students living in three rooms, who moved into one room, and gave us two. We also collected money for food. We got bedsheets and mattresses,” he said.

Speaking to the media, Itrat said, helped the relief operations. As word spread, the Sikhs came to the rescue. They opened up four rooms in a local Gurudwara and invited the Kashmiris to eat at their langars.

On most days, Itrat said, he was too busy to feel emotional, but there were moments which were overwhelming. “I remember these students who came and said, ‘Food, please give us food. We have not eaten for two days,’” Itrat said.

“I felt horrible when students told me that they were so scared to leave their rooms that they had gone to the toilet in polythene bags for two days,” he said. “How can your heart not break when you hear something like that?”

The biggest challenge, Itrat said, was convincing students to leave their rooms and make the road trip to Chandigarh.

By Monday, however, a system was in place. Students were either booking outstations cabs or finding a way to the two buses that the JKSO had arranged with the help of a Sikh group called Khalsa Aid.

“The police in Dehradun helped a lot. There were reaching the places where the students were trapped and accompanying them to the outer city limit,” he said.

State of denial

Even as hundreds of students were fleeing from cities like Dehradun and Ambala this week, the state authorities refused to admit that Kashmiris were being targeted by right wing activists.

While one Twitter account of the CRPF (Central Reserved Police Force) gave out a helpline number for Kashmiri students who felt they were in danger, the next day, another CRPF account said that news of the Kashmiri students facing harassment was fake.

This denial continued despite video proof of threats and intimidation against Kashmiri students and traders in different cities of North India, and even while police officers — in some places — were acting swiftly to ensure their safety.

Celebrities like Anupam Kher and other persons with a large Twitter following forged a narrative of us versus them.

They said that reporting on the Kashmiri students, who were being harassed and forced to leave, somehow detracted from the sympathy one had for the families of the slain soldiers. This is a false and divisive narrative.

An even more illogical narrative was built around how wrong it was to support these students because Islamic militants had driven Kashmiri Hindus from Kashmir in the early nineties.

Almost two dozen Kashmiri students have been suspended for posting offensive messages about the Pulwama attack. At least five have been booked for sedition. The insensitivity of a few students, however, is no excuse for frightening hundreds of Kashmiris into fleeing their colleges.

Earlier this week, Vikas Verma, the convener of the Bajrang Dal in Dehradun, told HuffPost India that he wanted “all” Kashmiri students out of Uttarakhand and they could return when the Indian flag was raised in every house in Kashmir.

Verma also said that the Bajrang Dal was tracking the social media account of Kashmiri students and preparing a “dossier” to submit to the police.

This vicious environment will only prevent Kashmiri students from completing their education and leading productive lives.

Two colleges in Dehradun have said that Kashmiri students will not be admitted in the new academic year.

Time to think

On Wednesday, Itrat said, 200 students were dispatched for Jammu in 17 tempo trucks. Around 20 to 25 students were still at the shelter and another 15 to 20 were making their way to Chandigarh.

“That should be the last of them,” he said.

As operations wound down on, Itrat found time to think about the deadly attack that killed 49 Indian soldiers on 14 February and everything that had followed.

“All these days, my only thought was how to get people to safety,” he said. “I can only condemn the attack. I blame both the Indian army and the Kashmiri people. Kashmiri students are being crushed under this conflict.”

Itrat continued, “We come here to make our careers, to realize our dreams, but we are always made soft targets. I just want to say that this needs to stop.”

Itrat, who lost his mother to cancer in 2008 and his father to a heart attack in 2011, lives with his elder siblings in north Kashmir.

Growing up in Kashmir was difficult but he prefers not to elaborate. First, he said, it would take too long, and second, there is nothing that has not already been said.

Did soldiers pave the way as he made his way to school and back — yes. Did they check his identity card — yes. Was he ever harassed by security forces — yes.

“There is not a lot that I can say. It wasn’t easy. It is a conflict area and there were hardships, but I was not radicalized,” Itrat said. “This conflict has been going on since 1947. India is doing politics. Pakistan is doing politics and it is the young people who are suffering.”

“When two countries like North Korea and South Korea can coexist, then why can India and Pakistan not find a way,” he said.

Even though Chandigarh feels safe, Itrat said that Kashmiris are always looked at differently. “Landlords say that they cannot rent to you because you are Kashmiri. People say hurtful things. Things like that,” he said.

The college student added, “But we have to keep coming here. There are only two or three professional institutes in Kashmir. We need exposure. We need a normal life.”

He wanted to join the NDA

Today, Itrat wants to grow the Jammu and Kashmir Student Organization, which he founded in 2017.

After completing his education, the mechanical engineering student wants to launch an online food delivery system like Uber Eats or Zomato in Kashmir.

Running a start up, however, was not always Itrat’s dream. For as long as he can remember, Itrat wanted to join the National Defense Academy (NDA).

“I thought that one can join after class 8, but it wasn’t so. Then, someone told me, you can join after class 10, but it wasn’t so. Nowadays, you can check everything on the Internet, but I did not have so much access back then. Finally, when I was in class 12, I was ready to join,” he said.

While family and friends had gathered for a wedding that same year, Itrat and his friends decided to sneak out for a drive at around eleven in the night.

“We were breaking the curfew. We were playing loud music in the car. Suddenly, we were surrounded by soldiers who were pointing flashlights in the car. They took our identity cards. They told us to get them the next day,” he said.

The meeting that Itrat had with an Army Major the next day changed the course of his life.

“When I told him that I wanted to join the NDA, he said things like, ‘Ghanta, you will join the army. Radicals like you are not fit for the NDA. You don’t have the brains.’ I was stunned.”

Even as he recalls that meeting after four years, Itrat sounds close to tears. “I wasn’t lying. It was my dream to join the NDA. I had bought all the books. This was an Army Major talking. I left my dream.”

As the conversation ended on this somber note, Itrat said, “We try and come close to you but it is you who push us away.”
