Trump to stop Indian duty-free exports to United States

Washington – US President Donald Trump looked set to open a new front in his trade wars today with a plan to end preferential trade treatment for India that allows duty-free entry for $5.6 billion worth of the country’s exports to the United States.

India does not plan to impose retaliatory tariffs on US goods, top trade official Anup Wadhawan said.

Trump, who has vowed to cut US trade deficits, has repeatedly called out India for its high tariffs, and US trade officials said scrapping the concessions would take at least 60 days after notifications to Congress and India.

“I am taking this step because, after intensive engagement between the United States and the government of India, I have determined that India has not assured the United States that it will provide equitable and reasonable access to the markets of India,” Trump said in a letter to congressional leaders.

Anup Wadhawan said the withdrawal of the Generalised System of Preferences (GSP) for Indian products would have limited impact. The two countries had been working on a trade package to address each other’s concerns, he said.

India’s exports of farm, marine and handicraft products to the United States could be hit. “We fear that our labour-intensive exports of agriculture, marine and handicraft products to the US would be hit hard,” Ajay Sahai, director general of the Federation of Indian Export Organisations, told Reuters.

The US goods and services trade deficit with India was $27.3 billion in 2017, the US Trade Representative’s Office said. — NDTV

“Saudi Arabia played a vital role in preventing India-Pak war”, says Pakistan Information Minister

Riyadh – Pakistan’s Information and Broadcast minister Fawad Chaudhary thanked Saudi Arabia on Tuesday for playing a vital role in preventing a war and de-escalating tensions between India and Pakistan.

“Saudi Arabia moved the rest of the countries such as the United Arab Emirates and the US to play a role in preventing India from escalating tensions with Pakistan”, Chaudhry told Geo News.

However, he accused Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not stepping forward for peace initiatives when Pakistan offered him.

“Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi did not want to ease tensions with Pakistan and did not respond to Pakistan’s peace initiatives,” he added.

“Modi was trying to exploit the escalation of tension with Pakistan to enhance his political popularity ahead of the Indian elections,” he accused. — SPA

Pakistan fires Information Minister for anti-Hindu remarks, says no tolerance for “non-sense”

Lahore – Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan ordered on Tuesday immediate removal of their Information Minister for making anti-Hindu remarks by calling Hindus “cow urine drinkers”.

Fayyazul Hassan Chohan who heads Information Ministry of Pakistan’s Punjab Province came under serious criticism from their senior members of his party for the derogatory comments.

“PTI Punjab government has removed Fayyaz Chohan from the post of Punjab information minister following derogatory remarks about the Hindu community,” official Twitter account of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf tweeted.

It further said: “Bashing someone’s faith should not be a part of any narrative. Tolerance is the first & foremost pillar on which #Pakistan was built.”

However, Chohan publicly apologized for his remarks claiming that his intention was Modi and the Indian Media rather Hindus in general.

Despite his apologies, PM Khan took the matter serious and ordered his removal.

“I was addressing Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Indian armed forces and their media not the Hindu community in Pakistan,” he said. “I apologise if my remarks hurt the Hindu community in Pakistan,” Chohan said. “My remarks were in no way directed at Pakistan’s Hindu community.”

Special assistant to PM on Political affairs Naeemul-Haque said, “The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf government will not tolerate this nonsense. Remember the flag of Pakistan is not just green. It’s incomplete without the white which represents the minorities.”

Foreign Office spokesperson Mohammad Faisal also took to Twitter and said, “Pakistan proudly owns the white in the flag as much as the green, values contributions of the Hindu community and honours them as our own.”

Indian Muslims vs. Muslim Countries: Doubting the faith of Indian Muslims

by Dr. Umme Abdullah Khan al-Hindi

It’s better that those Muslims who live in Muslim majority countries try and be sensitive to the condition of Muslims living in countries of non-Muslims and their limitations instead of slapping titles of “Munafiq” and “Murtads” on them based on pure ignorance.

Recently a Pakistani Sheikh based in Makkah-Saudi Arabia conducted a live-video session through his Facebook page, which titled “Advice to Indian Muslims”, the Sheikh went on explaining the principles of “Al-Wala wal-Bara” for around 20 minutes. Later he switched on to the “attacking mode” wherein he named few Indian Muslims and termed them “Murtad” or apostates.

And for those who claim themselves to be followers of the Salaf or pious predecessors, then one of the principles is—and I’ll quote here the book of Dr. Abdus Salam As Suhaymi كن سلفيا على الجادة and the page number is 64 under the chapter titled

(بعض القواعد في المنهج السلفي)

This is the fourth principle mentioned in this chapter and is as follows:

(إن درء المفاسد مقدم على جلب المصالح)

Which is loosely translated as – preventing evil/chaos takes precedence over establishing matters.

Which means – it is a principle of Salafiyyah that we try to avoid fasaad and harm in the face of danger and that takes precedence over establishing certain matters of religion—in this case, showing hatred for the disbelievers while living in their country where the general atmosphere is one where the ruling party and the rulers are seeking every opportunity to defame/oppress or cause riots among people so as to inflict maximum harm over Muslims.

Proof of the Principle

Shaykh Abdus Salam As Suhaymi presents proof directly from the Quran for this by mentioning the Words of Allaah the Most High, Exalted be His Mention.

“And insult not those whom they (disbelievers) worship besides Allah, lest they insult Allah wrongfully without knowledge. Thus We have made fair-seeming to each people its own doings; then to their Lord is their return and He shall then inform them of all that they used to do.” [Ref: Quran 6:108]

In this ayah, Allaah is commanding us not to insult the false gods of the Disbelievers so that they don’t insult Allaah back—this is the best example we can have. If we are not to insult their false gods due to backlash and retaliation upon our One True God who Worthy of Worship, then what about the retaliation upon lives of human beings?

Are Indian Muslims not supposed to be wise, follow this principle and stay silent?

Nobody, especially those who follow the principles of Tawheed and Salafiyyah, nobody from among them is supporting the disbelievers against Muslims. But is it necessary that Indian Muslims should fly green flags and make oaths of allegiance to Pakistani army or leadership knowing very well that they will be labeled as traitors and can end up in jail or worse, be killed by a mob. Is this what you all want?

There are many other evidences regarding this principle in the book on the same page and following pages but as Shaykh Al Albani said One evidence is enough for a seeker of truth while a 1000 evidences are not enough for a follower of desires.

It’s better that those Muslims who live in Muslim majority countries try and be sensitive to the condition of Muslims living in countries of non-Muslims and their limitations instead of slapping titles of “Munafiq” and “Murtads” on them based on pure ignorance.

Instead of being self-styled Shaykhs and Shaykhahs, it’s better for Muslims to go and consult scholars on this issue if they are so concerned about the Islam and Eeman of Indian Muslims instead of passing ignorant judgments on them.

And those slapping Nawaqidhul Islam principles on Indian Muslims must remember that the same book has another principle that a false Takfeer leads the Takfeeri to leave the fold of Islam. And the same goes for a person calling another Muslim as HYPOCRITE.

Those labeling their brothers and sisters with these dangerous titles should fear Allah, restrain their tongues and comprehend the gravity of their statements. There is no dearth of true scholars in our lands. Ring one of them up, explain to them the situation of Indian Muslims and ask them what they are supposed to do.

If you can’t do that, better stay shut.

Another question to Muslims living in Muslim majority countries today you are talking about Walaa and Baraa when the question is about your COUNTRY. Where were your voices when 10,000 Muslims were slaughtered in Gujarat riots? I never saw a leader from Muslim majority country neighboring India or any activist or media person questioning the killing of Muslims. Why did nobody from the entire Muslim world raise a voice against that massacre?

Now just because it’s a matter of your army, Indian Muslims must put their lives, honor and wealth in danger. Where was that army when Muslims in India needed help? Don’t confuse your nationalism and patriotism with Salafiyyah or principles of Tawheed. It’s disgusting how some Muslims use these principles to hide their inbuilt patriotism towards their country and trying to pass it off as Islam.

As a matter of fact, Indian Muslims have had to face more problems due to cross-border extremist organizations. Every few years they conduct attacks and Indian Muslims face problems. It’s just like the situation in Palestine/Israel. Hamas throws a petrol bomb and Israel razes Palestinian civilian homes.

India has top-Seven most polluted cities of the World

by Michelle Jamrisko

Seven of the top 10 most polluted cities in the world are in India, according to a new study showing South Asia’s battle with deteriorating air quality and the economic toll it’s expected to take worldwide. Gurugram, located southwest of India’s capital New Delhi, led all cities in pollution levels in 2018, even as its score improved from the previous year, according to data released by IQAir Air

The index measures the presence of fine particulate matter known as PM2.5, a pollutant that can fester deep in the lungs and bloodstream of human beings.

“This has enormous impacts, on our health and on our wallets,” Yeb Sano, executive director of Greenpeace Southeast Asia, said in a statement released with the figures.

“In addition to human lives lost, there’s an estimated cost of $225 billion in lost labor, and trillions in medical costs.” India, the world’s fastest-growing major economy, makes up 22 of the top 30 most polluted cities, with five in China, two in Pakistan and one in Bangladesh. India racks up health-care costs and productivity losses from pollution of as much as 8.5 percent of gross domestic product, according to the World Bank.

China made marked progress in its usually dismal pollution levels, with average concentrations falling by 12 percent in 2018 from the previous year, according to the data. That should help the message President Xi Jinping will share with political party leaders on progress across three so-called “critical battles” during the National People’s Congress meetings that start this week.

Sano traced much of the problematic readings back to climate change. He noted that burning fossil fuels is both the key driver of climate change and of air pollution worldwide, and that shifting atmospheric conditions have worsened air quality and amplified forest fires.

The Rise of Secret Executions in Iran

by Milad Pourisa

“Among all countries in the world and even among countries in the region that follow sharia, Iran is the only country that executes child criminals.”

The overall number of people executed in Iran dropped in 2018, but executions of people from minority ethnic groups has risen, according to a new report by the Iran Human Rights organization (IHR). The report also highlights that Iran is still one of the few countries that carries out executions in public, and which allows children to face the death penalty.

“The important point in our recent report is the decrease in the number of executions from 517 in 2017 to 273 in 2018,” Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam, the co-founder of IHR and its spokesman, told IranWire. “This is an unprecedented drop in the past 10 years,” he said, adding that the drop in executions was due to changes in the country’s Anti-Narcotics Law. “Unlike short-term fluctuations, the number of executions in Iran in 2018 shows a purposeful change,” he said. “The number of drug-related executions fell from 231 in 2017 to 24 the following year.”

Ethnic Minorities

But Amiry-Moghaddam said the group’s annual report [PDF] revealed that 66 percent of executions carried out in 2018 were not publicly announced by the Islamic Republic. “We found [out about] these through the news, reports by the families of the executed and other evidence,” he said. “Most of the unannounced executions took place in border regions,” he added, pointing out that these provinces are home to large populations of ethnic minorities. “More than 90 percent of unannounced executions were carried out secretly in these regions. We were not able to cite many executions of the members of ethnic groups because our method is to only cite cases that at least two independent sources have verified.”

Although it was difficult to ascertain an exact number on the executions of people from minority communities, Amiry-Moghaddam said the charges against these individuals tended to be politically motivated. “Besides qisas [retribution], what is noteworthy is the increase in the number of executions on charges of moharebeh [waging war against god] or ‘corruption on earth,’ which clearly show a political bias. Of course, to be more exact, these statistics cover border regions that include areas populated by ethnic minorities. Three Kurdish prisoners— Zanyar Moradi, Loghman Moradi and Ramin Hossein Panahi — three Baluchi prisoners and eight other prisoners accused of working with ISIS [after the 2017 terrorist attack on the Iranian parliament] are among those who were executed on charges of ‘corruption on earth’ and ‘waging war against god.’ Also executed on the charge of ‘corruption on earth’ were three individuals who had been convicted of financial crimes.”

There is an absence of due process of law in most of these death penalty cases, Amiry-Moghaddam said, and there were widespread reports that prisoners had been denied access to a lawyer. For example, he cites the case of Zanyar and Loghman Moradi, who were sentenced to death for murdering the son of the Friday Prayers Imam for Marivan in Kurdistan. Although their lawyer Saleh Nikbakht repeatedly told the court that the day the murder took place, Loghman Moradi had been working on a construction crane in Sarvabad, 35 kilometers from Marivan, the court ignored the defense and instead cited confessions they had been forced to give under duress after being tortured.

Execution of Children and Public Executions

According to the report, in 2017 Iran executed five children, and in 2018 this number rose to six.

“Among all countries in the world and even among countries in the region that follow sharia, Iran is the only country that executes child criminals.”

He also said that the Islamic Republic’s continuing practice of carrying out public executions was another blot on the country’s human rights record. “Like the execution of children, few countries carry out public executions,” he said. “Moreover, it has no basis in sharia. Therefore, the international community can seriously ask the Islamic Republic to end this practice.”

Amiry-Moghaddam puts special emphasis on the lack of due process in all death penalty cases, from defendants charged with murder to political activists. “I can say with certainty that throughout all the years that Iran Human Rights has been working to abolish the death penalty in Iran, there has been no one who had been sentenced to death and has not been tortured in the course of prosecution,” he said. “Three years ago a domestic paper published a report about the defendant in a murder case who was found not guilty just 48 hours before he was to be executed when they found the real murderer. When asked why he had confessed to a murder that he had not committed, he answered: ‘After the arrest they beat me so much that I said to myself that if I did not confess I would die under torture.’ He had been hopeful that if he confessed to what the agents wanted, he would have a chance to survive.”

International Pressure for Human Rights

The Islamic Republic does not pay much attention to demands from international organizations for it to observe human rights, and Amiry-Moghaddam acknowledges that “human rights is political in nature” and that it’s important to keep up the pressure on the Iranian authorities. “Throughout history there have been many cases when important changes have come about due to political pressures. South Africa during apartheid is one example. In the case of the Islamic Republic we have the example of pressure by European governments to end death by stoning and the abolition of the death penalty. The first one bore fruit years ago and, with the changes in the Ani-Narcotics Law and abolition of death by stoning, the situation has improved.”

But some political activists oppose the idea of raising the issue of human rights as part of negotiations between Iran and western governments. In their view, it’s also an abuse of human rights to put pressure on Iran.

“As a human rights activist, I find the opposition of some political activists to negotiations between western countries and the Islamic Republic over human rights completely illogical,” Amiry-Moghaddam said. “I believe, on the contrary, such diplomatic negotiations to be one of the most important tools for improving the situation in Iran. In these years human rights organizations have done their job. I do not claim that their activities have made no difference but, first, the refusal of the Islamic Republic to be held accountable and, second, the present structure of international law that recognizes the independence of governments to rule within their borders, have made it difficult for real change. Therefore, political pressure within the framework of negotiations with Islamic Republic officials can be one of the best methods for changing the situation. We cannot hope for a fundamental change as long as the Islamic republic does not feel that its international relations are dependent on respecting the principles of human rights.”

OIC resolution condemns “mass blindings” in Kashmir, while Sushma calls it “internal matter”

The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation on Saturday adopted a resolution on Jammu and Kashmir, condemning the “atrocities and human rights violations” in the state, The Indian Express reported. This came a day after India’s External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj urged the organisation to come together to fight the global menace of terrorism and extremism.

The resolution on Kashmir had phrases such as “mass blindings” – referring to the use of pellet guns by security forces on protesting youth, and references to “Indian terrorism” in the state, The Hindu reported. It also said the group “condemns the trend of unprecedented escalation of ceasefire violations by Indian occupation forces”. The recommendations included an appeal to members of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation to mobilise funds for “humanitarian assistance to the Kashmiri people”.

In response, India issued a statement saying that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of the country, and the matter is “strictly internal to India”. The Ministry of External Affairs, which issued the statement, also said that “we deeply appreciate” the “historic gesture” of inviting External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj to the 50th anniversary meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation.

United Arab Emirates Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah said the group had sent a “very clear and positive sign to India”. “I think the OIC has sent a very clear and positive sign to India and looks forward to strengthening such a relationship to a point where we can embrace India one day at the OIC,” he said.

However, the resolution on Kashmir was kept out of the main negotiated document, the Abu Dhabi Declaration. The Indian Express, citing sources, said that resolutions such as the one on Kashmir “are based on country proposals and are not negotiated documents”.

Swaraj, in her speech, had urged the group to come together to fight the menace of terrorism. “Terrorism and extremism bear different names and labels. It uses diverse causes,” she said. “But, in each case, it is driven by distortion of religion, and a misguided belief in its power to succeed.”

“Social media warriors, go to the front if you want war,” says wife of a slain IAF Pilot

Social media warriors, please stop. If you want war, go to the front.

Vijeta Mandavgane – Wife of Indian Air Force officer

Nashik — The wife of an Air Force officer who was among the seven killed when an Mi-17 chopper crashed in Jammu and Kashmir’s Budgam last week sent out a strong message to those who are using social media to vent their anger over the India-Pakistan tension. Vijeta Mandavgane’s husband, Squadron Leader Ninad Mandavgane, was cremated with full military honours in Maharashtra’s Nashik on Friday.

Vijeta Mandavgane urged social media users to show restraint and not whip up sentiments.

“There is a lot happening on social media and on TV. Media acts responsible and sometimes don’t. You shout slogans. Instead of that, if you truly want to bring about change, for my Ninad, for WC Abhinandan and the martyrs, do a small thing. Either join the forces or make your family members join the forces. If you can’t, then at least bring about small changes around you to help the nation. You can keep your surroundings clean, not litter the roads, not urinate in the public, not harassing girls,” Ms Mandavgane told reporters. The message was widely shared online.

Squadron Leader Ninad Mandavgane was among the six Air Force officers killed after a Russian made Mi-17 crashed in an open field near Garend Kalaan village in Budgam on Wednesday. A civilian too was killed.

His two-year old daughter Nia kissed his coffin as his wife, her uncle and grandparents stood beside her stoically.

“We don’t want a war. You don’t know the damages of war. We don’t want more Ninads to go. Social media warriors, please stop. If you want war, go to the front,” Vijeta Mandavgane was quoted as saying by news agency IANS.

Over 800 Palestinians cross Egypt by Buses to perform Umrah in Makkah

Gaza – Around 800 Palestinians from Gaza Strip traveled to Egypt on Sunday through Rafah border to catch Egyptian flights towards Jeddah to perform Umrah.

The Palestinian pilgrims started off at dawn and will be taken to Cairo’s Airport to take flights to Makkah in Saudi Arabia, said a Palestinian official at the Rafah crossing in the Gaza Strip.

Security sources on the Egyptian side of the Rafah border officially confirmed that it’s the first time Egypt has granted permission to Palestinians to perform Umrah due to heavy insurgencies of militants into the northern Sinai after Brotherhood president Mursi was overthrown in 2013.

Gaza which is run by Hamas has been under Israeli blockade for over 10 years, however, over 2500 pilgrims are authorized annually to leave Gaza via Egypt to perform Hajj.

And over 1000 Palestinians are always invited as Saudi King Salman’s Special guest for Hajj.

Rafah crossing of Egypt is the only one out of Gaza which is not under Israeli control, so Egypt carefully monitors visitors travelling through it, due to the sole reason of militant insurgencies that would cause chaos in Egypt.
