Beauty of Dubai in the eyes of an Expatriate

A place where women, and especially women with children, are treated with utmost respect from the public transport to government offices. Whenever a woman with a child enters everyone would be ready to give up their seats to let her sit.

“Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory.” —Theodor Seuss Geisel.

As an expat who was born and brought up in one of the most beautiful, safe and luxurious cities in the world, I didn’t realise it’s true worth until I was away from it.

Dubai is a city where many people from over the world come in hoping for a better and comfortable life. Infact, the percentage of the expatriates from Asian countries and the western world seem to exceed the locals, where expats make up a whopping 85% and the locals only 15% of the population. Highly diverse and multi cultural, many deem Dubai to be a home away from home. And why not? It is from the world’s ten best countries to live in as an expat.

I have lived in Dubai for a good 24 years before I moved. Only then did I realise how easy life in Dubai was. I could go wherever I wanted, whenever I wished without any fear of being robbed or harrassed. A city where most rules are followed by the residents, even if something is feared, the police would be only five minutes away. Maybe the fastest service I ve ever experienced, even when I met with an accident, the ambulance arrived only in a couple of minutes.

A place where women, and especially women with children, are treated with utmost respect from the public transport to government offices. Whenever a woman with a child enters everyone would be ready to give up their seats to let her sit. Visiting offices to get official work done they will let her skip the queue so that her work is done with ease and she wouldn’t have to wait. From metros to buses, specific areas are designed for women and children so that they wouldn’t have to stand.

Afraid of getting lost in Dubai ? Not with all the direction boards, you won’t fear losing your way. If not that, then stop a cab or taxi and they would be more than happy to guide you.

Getting bored is not a thing in a city like Dubai. The amount of places that a person can visit, natural or man made, are so many that even after living for years, there are still places that I haven’t visited even once and I m still looking forward to.

Coming to food, everyone’s favorite topic, I haven’t seen such easy access to food. Going around the city, there is no difficulty of finding enumerous amounts of restaurants, different cuisines and fast food restaurants at every petrol station you will never have to worry about what to eat. Having a lazy weekend at home? Then just order in and have your food delivered to your doorstep. Even the cheapest of food from a cafeteria is just a phone call away . Even better, every grocery store has a free delivery service.

All in all, for someone who has visited various places like cities in the gulf or elsewhere like different cities in the United States, and living in a completely different country, I haven’t seen the like of Dubai. In it’s beauty, safety and comfort I would rank it number 1 in the world. Every country and city has it’s negatives and positives, but Dubai is one of a kind where it’s positives would far supercede it’s negatives, in a way no other city would.

Khashoggi dies after a brawl, 18 suspects arrested, King to punish the culprits: Saudi Authorities

Riyadh – Saudi authorities officially confirmed after preliminary investigations on Friday that Khashoggi was killed in an accidental death after a brawl in Saudi Consulate in Istanbul, and over 18 suspects are detained so far.

According to Saudi Press Agency, the Kingdom is determined to take every necessary step to clarify the truth of the matter involving the Journalist’s death, and to punish all those who are involved.

“The suspects had travelled to Istanbul to meet with the citizen Jamal Khashoggi as there were indications of the possibility of his returning back to the country,” the officials said.

“The results of the preliminary investigations also revealed that the discussions that took place with the citizen Jamal Khashoggi during his presence in the Consulate of the Kingdom in Istanbul by the suspects did not go as required and developed in a negative way which led to a fight and a quarrel between some of them and the citizen Jamal Khashoggi. Yet the brawl aggravated and lead to his death and their attempt to conceal and cover what happened,” the source added.

Kingdom expressed full determination in bringing out the truth to public and to hold everyone accountable by dragging the suspects to competent Sharia courts.

However, the officials vehemently denied the media accusations that the Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman ordered the ‘planned’ assassination.

Later, King Salman has ordered the formation of ministerial committee headed by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to restructure the kingdom’s General Intelligence Presidency, and ordered investigation results to be presented within a month of the issue date.

King has also relieved Assistant Chief of General Intelligence – Mohammed bin Saleh al-Rumaih, Assistant Chief of General Intelligence for Human Resources – Abdullah bin Khalifa Al-Shaya, and Director of the General Directorate of Security and Protection at General Intelligence Presidency – Rashad bin Hamed Al-Muhamadi.

Meanwhile, American President Donald Trump appreciated Kingdom’s prompt efforts in finding the truth before the expected time and he reiterated America’s strong ties with Saudi Arabia.

China to launch artificial ‘moon’ to reflect Sun-light during night

0

Chengdu – China is preparing to install artificial moons by 2020 to substitute street-lamps and to reduce electricity costs, Chinese state media reported on Friday.

The ‘artificial moons’ are basically satellites that will posses reflectors to reflect sun light to illuminate urban areas in place of regular street lights.

Wu Chunfeng – head of Tian Fu New Area Science Society – said to China daily, “The first man-made moon will launch from Xichang Satellite Launch Center in Sichuan, with three more to follow in 2022 if the first test goes well.”

The artificial moons will reflect light from the sun to save upto 1.2 billion yuan ($170 million) a year in electricity costs for Chengdu, if they illuminate an area of 50 square kilometers.

China’s space programme competes with United States and Russia, and a number of ambitious projects are in the pipeline, including the Chang’e-4 lunar probe, which aims to launch later this year. If it succeeds, it will be the first rover to explore the “dark side” of the moon.

Similar experiment called as ‘Znamya’ was done in 1990s by Russian scientists who reportedly used giant mirrors to reflect light from space.

The companies involved in the development of artificial moons are: Tian Fu New Area Science Society, other universities and institutes, including the Harbin Institute of Technology and China Aerospace Science and Industry Corp.

Khashoggi says: “Saudi Arabia does not kill or torture”

A video surfaced on social media this week where the missing Saudi journalist Khashoggi clarified to the anchor that ‘Saudi Arabia does not kill or torture’ the critics.

An anchor of Qatar-based Al-Jazeera channel alleged that Saudi Government uses brutal methods to silence their critics.

The 60-years-old Saudi Journalist – Jamal Ahmad Khashoggi – took disagreement to the blatant allegations and refuted it.

“At least this will open a room for rumors, hatred and for the hard feelings. There is someone whose father and brother were imprisoned and it’s said that, he was allegedly tortured and then taken to the hospital,” alleged the anchor.

“What will this do to with the family cohesion that any Ruler of Saudi Arabia needs in order to continue his reign and also for Saudi Arabia to stabilize,” he further said.

Khashoggi said, “Look first, we need to be precise in our information. No one was killed in Saudi Arabia.”

“No one was tortured. I don’t think that happened,” he emphasized.

“But it’s not the nature of the country (Saudi Arabia) to have something like that to happen,” he adds.

Khashoggi allegedly went missing from Saudi Consulate in Turkey on 2nd October 2018.

The disappearance gave an impetus to speculations and conspiracy theories against the Saudi Government. The kingdom is accused of his cold-blooded murder while the Saudi officials vehemently denied the blatant accusations.

Later this week, Turkish Justice Minister Abdulhamit Gül appealed public to ignore any leaked information alleging Saudi’s involvement in Mr. Khashoggi’s disappearance.

Does Saudi Journalism have to change after the Khashoggi battle?

0

By Mashari Althaydi

They said: Where is the voice of Saudi journalists? Where are we (Saudi media) from dailies like the Washington Post and the New York Times and channels like CNN, CNBC and BBC..etc.?

Has the Qatari-Muslim Brotherhood media won against Saudi media and against the media that loves Saudi Arabia in the Khashoggi battle?

It’s a direct question and answering it is not as easy as it seems to those who shallowly look at matters without finding the joy (and I am not saying the ‘chore’) of diving deeper into matters.

Yes, it became clear in the Jamal Khashoggi fuss during the past few days that the Qatari-Brotherhood (I insist on this mixture between Qatar and the Muslim Brotherhood as there’s no meaning to one without the other) fuss was the loudest.

The are Al Jazeera platforms and its employees, the Brotherhood “mujahideen” in the world and the sensitive and caring people who are concerned about human rights and freedom of expression but are among the supporters of the Khomeinist Iran! There is also the left journalists in the West, in the US and other countries.

Saudi media

All these harnessed their efforts to promote their own narrative about Jamal Khashoggi. They pulled out their swords, wielded their spears and directed their arrows, and they thought and estimated, hence, their black dust obscured the eyes.

This is all true but there are people, whether Saudis and others, who directed their anger at the Saudi media, especially on prominent outlets, both audiovisual and print media.

They said: Where is the voice of Saudi journalists? Where are we (Saudi media) from dailies like the Washington Post and the New York Times and channels like CNN, CNBC and BBC..etc.?

Others said that we did not succeed in prorogating our story and the supporters of the Brotherhood, Iran and the left succeeded in solidifying their story, and this is due to lack of freedom of expression or the dominance of emotional enthusiasm over “professionalism” on some of us.

I – although I have “real” notes on the general media scene, but this is not the space to explain them – completely disagree with the previous diagnosis.

Al Jazeera and those who adopted an approach similar to it, whether in Arabic or other languages, did not impose their narrative because they are more “professional.” This is wrong as Al Jazeera is so far from professionalism, as much as street singer Sha’bola is far from reading Beethoven’s notes. Al-Jazeera and its sisters were the loudest because they addressed an audience that expects such coverage from them. It was swimming in its regular pool, and if it had said otherwise, this audience would not have listened to it.

Those who liked the coverage of the Qatari-Brotherhood media are those who personally or whose fathers were biased against Saudi Arabia in the Kuwait war in 1990 before Al Jazeera or Al Arabiya existed. There’s nothing great about Al Jazeera and its sisters!
Does this mean that our media is fine and does not need a new vision, a different approach and qualitative tools?

The answer is of course not, as it actually needs that. The purpose of the previous remarks is to disagree with the false diagnosis. Perhaps this is to be continued.
