Riyadh – In separate phone calls to the commanders of Sudan’s army and Rapid Support Forces on Sunday, the foreign minister of Saudi Arabia demanded that any military escalation cease in Sudan.
Prince Faisal bin Farhan spoke on the phone with Gen. Abdel-Fattah Burhan, head of the Sudanese military, and Gen. Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, head of the RSF, about the country’s current state and emphasised the significance of returning to the framework transition agreement, which ensures the security and stability of Sudan and its citizens.
The minister reaffirmed the Kingdom’s demand for restraint and putting national interests first in a manner that protects Sudan’s gains and its citizens.
Fighting between Sudan’s military and the RSF on Saturday in the capital and other locations dealt a fresh blow to expectations for a democratic transition and increased concerns about a larger conflict.
The skirmishes culminated several months of rising hostilities between the RSF and the military. Due to these difficulties, a contract with political parties to restart the nation’s ill-fated democratic transition—which was halted by a military coup in October 2021—was delayed.
