Faiq emphasized that Afghanistan continues to suffer under the Taliban, describing it as a “hub for terrorism”
International experts have called for the official recognition of “gender apartheid” in Afghanistan as the Taliban regime continues to impose severe restrictions on women and girls in the country.
Speaking at a media event during the UN General Assembly, international lawyer Karima Bennoune emphasized that the oppressive treatment of women is central to the Taliban’s system of governance.
Bennoune urged the international community to label the Taliban’s actions as apartheid, similar to the racial apartheid in South Africa, to prevent any member state from being complicit in or normalizing the Taliban’s illegal actions.
During the UN Security Council meeting, several governments and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the treatment of women and girls in Afghanistan. However, the council stopped short of using the term “apartheid” to describe the situation.
The representatives highlighted the need for a reversal of the Taliban’s restrictions on women and girls, expressing concern about the lack of representation and the worsening humanitarian and economic conditions in Afghanistan.
The Chinese representative suggested that the security situation in Afghanistan had improved since the Taliban’s control, but Naseer Faiq, the representative of the former Afghan government, strongly rejected this claim.
Faiq emphasized that Afghanistan continues to suffer under the Taliban, describing it as a “hub for terrorism”. He called on the UN to recognize and classify the plight of women and girls as gender apartheid and urged ongoing humanitarian assistance for the Afghan people.
The situation in Afghanistan remains a significant concern for the international community, with experts and officials advocating for the recognition of gender apartheid to draw attention to the severe violations of women’s rights.
The call for action emphasizes the need for a principled international response to address the situation and support the Afghan people in their struggle for rights and a better future.
