Seattle– Japan marked the 1,000th match in FIFA World Cup history with a dominant 4-0 victory over Tunisia in Group F on Saturday, powered by a brace from striker Ayase Ueda that secured passage to the knockout stage and eliminated the North African side from the tournament.

Ueda scored twice as Japan controlled proceedings from the outset, extending the Asian side’s strong start to the competition and underscoring its growing status as a consistent contender on the global stage.

The victory carried additional significance as FIFA identified the contest as the 1,000th match played in World Cup history, a milestone reached nearly a century after the tournament’s inaugural edition.

Japan’s attacking movement and disciplined organization proved too much for Tunisia, which struggled to contain its opponent’s pace and creativity. The four-goal margin reflected Japan’s superiority across the pitch and ensured the Samurai Blue finished the day in a commanding position in Group F.

For Tunisia, the defeat ended hopes of advancing to the knockout rounds, bringing its World Cup campaign to a close. The North Africans entered the match needing a positive result but were unable to respond after Japan seized control.

The result continues Japan’s recent record of strong performances at major international tournaments and strengthens its ambitions of making a deep run in the competition.

Tunisia exits the tournament after failing to secure the points required to remain in contention in a highly competitive group.

“Let’s keep this mindset, it’s only the beginning,” Ayyoub Bouaddi said after Morocco’s match against Brazil, as the teenager’s performance

“Let’s keep this mindset, it’s only the beginning,” Ayyoub Bouaddi said after Morocco’s match against Brazil, as the teenager’s performance highlighted the rise of a young generation in Moroccan football.

Ayyoub Bouaddi’s impressive display for Morocco against Brazil has drawn attention to the country’s emerging football talent, with the teenager praised for his composure, technical ability and maturity on an international stage.

Bouaddi, who helped Morocco secure an opening draw against Brazil, became one of the key figures of the match after completing 30 successful passes in the opposition half, the highest figure for his team. His performance was widely discussed online, alongside a photograph of him attending a Morocco match as a 10-year-old during the 2018 World Cup.

Morocco winger Chemsdine Talbi said Bouaddi’s contribution had been important for the team. He described the midfielder as a talented player who had joined the squad to make an impact.Born and raised in Creil in northern France, Bouaddi began his football journey with AFC Creil before joining Lille’s academy at the age of 13.

His development at club level quickly attracted attention, and he later became the youngest player to appear in a European club competition match during his debut in the Conference League.Beyond football, Bouaddi has maintained an academic focus.

He is studying mathematics and physics alongside his professional career, saying education helps him remain focused and mentally sharp. His background and approach have been highlighted as examples of the discipline behind his rapid rise. Before becoming a professional footballer, he won a public-speaking competition for players from professional academies in France at an event held at the Élysée Palace and attended by Brigitte Macron.

Morocco’s progress under coach Mohamed Ouahbi has also placed greater emphasis on young players. Ouahbi, who recently moved into senior management after leading Morocco’s Under-20 side to a World Cup title, has built a squad that includes several young midfielders. The midfield that finished the match against Brazil had an average age of 20.6 years.

Alongside Bouaddi, Roma midfielder Neil El Aynaoui and Strasbourg player Samir El Mourabet were among those who impressed against a more experienced Brazilian side. The performance raised questions about Brazil’s midfield transition. The partnership between Casemiro and Bruno Guimarães, which had been a key feature of Brazil’s recent teams, may not continue as the national side looks to balance experience with younger options.

Brazil introduced Fabinho in the second half, adding stability, but the midfielder is now in the later stages of his career. Brazil’s starting lineup had the highest average age for a match since 2006, increasing discussion about the team’s future direction.Vinícius Júnior rejected the idea that Brazil’s midfield simply needed younger players.

The forward said success would depend on adapting to the available squad and combining the strengths of experienced and younger footballers. He argued that experience remained important in major tournaments and that younger players also had responsibilities to contribute to the team’s ambitions. For Morocco, the emergence of players such as Bouaddi represents the continued development of a generation that has gained international attention.

The midfielder’s performance against Brazil has strengthened expectations around a team increasingly built around youth, technical ability and tactical confidence.Bouaddi’s rise from youth football in France to the international stage has become part of a broader story of Moroccan football’s growing depth, with young players increasingly competing alongside established names.

“For many supporters, the biggest frustration is not that the World Cup is coming to their city, but that it

“For many supporters, the biggest frustration is not that the World Cup is coming to their city, but that it feels increasingly out of reach.”

With one year remaining before the 2026 FIFA World Cup reaches its final stages across the United States, Canada and Mexico, many football supporters living in host cities say anticipation for the tournament is being overshadowed by concerns over ticket prices, political tensions, infrastructure challenges and what they describe as the growing commercialization of the sport.

Interviews with fans across North America reveal a complex picture of public sentiment toward the first 48-team World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by three countries and feature a record number of participating nations.

While many supporters remain enthusiastic about welcoming the world’s largest football tournament to their home cities, numerous fans expressed frustration that attending matches may be financially out of reach for ordinary spectators. In Houston, longtime resident Ian Sherman said the prospect of hosting seven World Cup matches initially generated significant excitement.

However, he said that enthusiasm has diminished as ticket prices have become clearer and access to seats has proven difficult.Sherman pointed to prices exceeding $200 for upper-level seats at some group-stage matches and said many fans may ultimately be forced to rely on secondary markets if they hope to attend games involving major national teams.

Although football’s popularity has grown substantially in the United States over the past two decades, he said Houston remains primarily focused on American football, baseball and basketball. He also raised concerns about the city’s ability to absorb large numbers of visitors, citing traffic congestion and infrastructure pressures that could emerge during the tournament.

In Kansas City, local resident Parker McDowell said pride in hosting the World Cup has been accompanied by concern over broader political and security issues. While welcoming the city’s role as a base camp for several national teams, including England, Argentina, Algeria and the Netherlands, he said international visitors may be surprised by the region’s dependence on automobiles and limited public transportation options.

He also cited worries about global events, ticket affordability and public safety, including concerns surrounding gun violence in American cities.Political concerns emerged repeatedly among supporters interviewed across host locations. Several fans questioned whether current geopolitical developments align with the tournament’s traditional image as an event intended to unite nations through sport.

One supporter argued that restrictions affecting citizens of some countries and ongoing international conflicts have complicated perceptions of the tournament’s inclusiveness. Others criticized FIFA President Gianni Infantino and football’s governing body more broadly, claiming commercial and political considerations have increasingly overshadowed supporters’ interests.

In Mexico City, Francisco Fontano Patán described the tournament as a missed opportunity for urban development despite the city’s status as one of the competition’s flagship venues.Patán said local authorities had an opportunity to improve long-term transportation infrastructure around the city’s southern districts, including areas surrounding the iconic stadium formerly known as Azteca Stadium.

Instead, he said residents have seen only limited improvements that are unlikely to provide lasting benefits after the tournament concludes. He also argued that rising costs have distanced the event from ordinary citizens, leaving many supporters unable to attend matches in person.

Although public viewing events and fan festivals are expected across Mexico, Patán said those experiences are not significantly different from previous tournaments hosted elsewhere and do not compensate for the inability of many local residents to access stadium tickets.

Similar concerns were voiced in Monterrey, another Mexican host city. Resident Jose Galindo said excitement remains high because of the World Cup’s global significance, but acknowledged that many people cannot afford tickets or official merchandise.Galindo said the tournament increasingly feels like a premium product aimed at wealthier consumers rather than ordinary football supporters.

Nevertheless, he expects public viewing areas and informal gatherings to help create a festive atmosphere as the competition approaches. In Miami, Geoff Willerton said he remains excited about the tournament but does not personally know anyone planning to attend matches because of the costs involved.

While fan zones may offer an alternative, he said local awareness and excitement currently appear limited.Across several American host cities, supporters described a notable absence of visible World Cup enthusiasm despite the tournament’s proximity.

In New York, one resident suggested the event could struggle to compete for public attention in a city accustomed to hosting major international gatherings. Although the World Cup final will take place at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, he said many New Yorkers remain largely unaware of the event’s significance.Philadelphia resident James Powell said his own enthusiasm has declined steadily as ticket prices increased and concerns about FIFA’s governance intensified.

While he originally planned to attend matches, he now expects to watch from outside the stadium unless costs become more manageable.Powell said discussion of the World Cup remains relatively uncommon in Philadelphia despite the city’s role as a host venue.

Among the strongest criticism came from supporters in Northern California, where fans expressed disappointment over both ticket prices and the perceived lack of planning around public celebrations.San Francisco resident Ali said many football supporters had expected a festival atmosphere that would bring together fans from around the world.

Instead, uncertainty surrounding fan zones and the cost of attending matches has left many feeling excluded from an event taking place in their own region.Ali criticized organizers for prioritizing sponsors, corporate guests and VIP experiences over ordinary supporters.

He also questioned whether event planners fully understand the cultural significance of the World Cup compared with other major sporting events in North America.Despite widespread criticism, several supporters expressed optimism that local communities will ultimately embrace the tournament as kickoff approaches.

In Seattle, Roger Paul Probert-Baker described strong enthusiasm among residents and pointed to the city’s long football tradition, including support for the local club team and extensive experience hosting major sporting events.Probert-Baker said his family plans to participate in fan activities throughout the tournament and noted that preparations for security and crowd management are already underway.

He expressed confidence that Seattle will provide a welcoming environment for international visitors.Toronto residents also anticipate a vibrant atmosphere. Supporters there highlighted the city’s multicultural population and history of large public celebrations during previous World Cups.

Fans from numerous national backgrounds are expected to gather in neighborhoods, restaurants and public spaces to support their respective teams.

While enthusiasm varies across host cities, a common theme emerged from conversations with supporters throughout North America: the belief that the World Cup remains one of sport’s most powerful events, even as concerns over affordability, accessibility and governance continue to shape expectations.

For many fans, the challenge is not a lack of interest in football or the tournament itself. Rather, it is the perception that the event has become increasingly difficult for ordinary supporters to experience firsthand, despite being staged in their own communities.

Mexico City-Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said her government has no objection to hosting Iran’s national football team during the 2026

Mexico City-Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said her government has no objection to hosting Iran’s national football team during the 2026 FIFA World Cup after the team relocated its tournament base from the United States to Mexico, a move confirmed by FIFA on Monday.

Iran will be headquartered in the border city of Tijuana during the tournament while continuing to play its group-stage matches in the United States, according to FIFA’s official list of team base camps.

Speaking at a news conference, Sheinbaum said FIFA representatives informed Mexican authorities that the United States preferred not to host the Iranian squad outside of match days, prompting discussions about alternative arrangements.

“The United States doesn’t want the Iranian national team to stay overnight in the United States,” Sheinbaum said, adding that Mexico agreed to host the team without objection when approached by FIFA.
The decision comes amid heightened tensions involving Iran following the conflict that began on Feb. 28 between Iran, Israel and the United States. Security concerns and the broader diplomatic environment had fueled uncertainty for months regarding Iran’s logistical arrangements for the tournament.

Iran’s football federation announced over the weekend that the team would relocate its base from Tucson, Arizona, to Tijuana after receiving FIFA approval. The governing body formally confirmed the change when it released the final list of training bases for all 48 participating teams.

Iran is scheduled to open its World Cup campaign against New Zealand national football team in Inglewood, California, on June 15 before facing Belgium national football team on June 21 and Egypt national football team in Seattle on June 26.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup, which runs from June 11 through July 19, will be jointly hosted by United States, Canada and Mexico, marking the first tournament to be staged across three countries.

Base camps serve as teams’ operational headquarters throughout the competition, providing facilities for training, recovery and preparation between matches.
Questions surrounding Iran’s accommodation plans intensified as diplomatic tensions escalated and U.S. sanctions against Tehran complicated logistical considerations.

While the U.S. State Department said on Monday that President Donald Trump had made clear that Iran’s national team was welcome to participate in the tournament, it did not comment on where the squad would be based.

The State Department also did not address Sheinbaum’s remarks regarding U.S. preferences for the team’s off-field presence.

Sheinbaum said Mexican authorities were continuing to coordinate with FIFA on operational details ahead of the tournament, which is expected to be the largest World Cup in history following the expansion to 48 teams.

The arrangement underscores how international sporting events can be affected by broader geopolitical developments, even as organizers seek to ensure all qualified teams can participate in the competition.

Bengaluru-Indian batting great Virat Kohli said he would consider playing in the 2027 One-Day International World Cup only if he

Bengaluru-Indian batting great Virat Kohli said he would consider playing in the 2027 One-Day International World Cup only if he believes he can still contribute meaningfully to the national team, as the veteran batter reflected on his future in international cricket.

The 37-year-old, who retired from Twenty20 Internationals after India’s 2024 World Cup triumph and stepped away from Test cricket last year, remains active only in the ODI format.

Speaking on a podcast hosted by his Indian Premier League franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore, Kohli said he would not seek selection unless he and the team management believed he could continue adding value.

“If I can add value to the environment that I’m a part of and the environment feels like I can add value, I’ll be seen,” Kohli said.

Kohli added that he approaches every match with maximum intensity, saying he prepares to field “every ball like it’s the last ball” of his career.

The former India captain played 13 ODIs last year, scoring 651 runs, and returned to IPL action after last representing India in January. He has already scored one century during the current IPL season.

Kohli, one of the most prolific ODI batters in cricket history, has amassed 14,797 runs in 311 one-day internationals at an average of 58.71. Only Sachin Tendulkar has scored more ODI runs, with 18,426.

Now in his 17th year in international cricket, Kohli has continued to face scrutiny over his consistency despite strong performances against South Africa and New Zealand following a difficult series against Australia last year.

Reflecting on criticism surrounding his performances, Kohli questioned fluctuating assessments of his role within the team environment.

“Either tell me on day one I’m not good enough or I’m not needed,” he said. “Or if you’ve said I’m good enough and you say we’re not even thinking otherwise, then be quiet.”

The 2027 ODI World Cup is scheduled to be held in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia in October and November next year.

Rome— Italian authorities on Thursday dismissed a proposal linked to a U.S. official suggesting Italy could replace Iran at the upcoming FIFA World Cup, stating the idea was neither feasible nor appropriate as Iran continues preparations to participate in the tournament in the United States.

The suggestion was attributed to Paolo Zampolli, a U.S. special envoy for global partnerships, who according to the Financial Times raised the possibility with U.S. President Donald Trump and FIFA president Gianni Infantino as a contingency plan should Iran withdraw.

Zampolli told the Associated Press the proposal was not political and framed it as a hypothetical scenario. “My request was for the Italian people and the American-Italian people,” he said, adding that Italy’s four World Cup titles could justify its inclusion.Italian officials rejected the idea.

Sports Minister Andrea Abodi said “it’s not possible” and “not a good idea,” while Luciano Buonfiglio said participation in the tournament must be earned on merit. Finance Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti described the suggestion as “shameful.”Iran has not withdrawn from the World Cup and is preparing to play matches scheduled in U.S. cities including Los Angeles and Seattle in June.

FIFA has maintained that Iran’s fixtures will proceed as planned and has declined to comment on proposals to alter the lineup.Speaking at the White House, Trump said he had not given the matter much thought but called it “an interesting question.”

He deferred to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who said no U.S. decision had been made to bar Iranian players from entering the country.Rubio indicated that concerns, if any, would relate to non-athlete personnel accompanying the team.

“The problem with Iran would be, not their athletes. It would be some of the other people that they want to bring with them,” he said, adding that authorities might restrict entry to certain individuals.Iran’s embassy in Rome criticized the proposal, saying in a statement on X that football “belongs to the people, not to politicians,” and describing any attempt to exclude the team as unjustified.

Iran secured qualification through the Asian Football Confederation and has publicly affirmed its intention to participate. An Iranian government spokesperson said this week that the national team is preparing for “proud and successful participation.

”Italy failed to qualify for the World Cup for a third consecutive time, following a campaign that led to the resignation of its national team coach and football federation president.

FIFA regulations state that in the event of a team’s withdrawal, a replacement may be selected from another association, though the rules do not explicitly require the substitute to come from the same continental confederation.

New Delhi — India’s political analyst, Abhijeet Iyer Mitra, spoke up about how people unfairly call Indian cricket fans uncivilized. He pointed out the violent behavior that happened during the Brazil vs. Argentina match to show that it’s not right to judge Indian fans in that way.

Mitra wrote on X (ex-Twitter), “Lol – so much for all those ‘Indian cricket fans are uncivilized’. This from a Brazil Argentina match – complete with police baton charge and lots of broken nose, bones, and blood”. His comment raises important questions about unfairly judging a whole group based on isolated incidents.

Reposting Mitra’s post, Sabeeha Majid, a Researcher from South Africa wrote, “Didn’t you know, people are ‘uncivilized’ when they’re African or Asian.

Mitra’s post garnered significant attention, receiving an impressive 224.6K views, along with 5000 likes and 1600 reposts.

It’s important to understand that it’s unfair to judge an entire nation or its people based on the actions of a few individuals. While there may be instances of unruly behavior during sports events, we should differentiate between individual conduct and the overall character of a nation.

Sports events, like football or cricket matches, can stir up strong emotions and passionate reactions from fans around the world. Unfortunately, acts of violence or misconduct can happen regardless of where the event takes place or the nationality of the fans involved. Such incidents should be condemned and addressed on an individual basis rather than blaming an entire nation.

The incident Mitra highlighted serves as a reminder that uncivilized behavior cannot be attributed solely to a specific group. Instead of mocking or insulting a nation, the focus should be on promoting positive fan culture, encouraging responsible behavior, and creating an inclusive environment within the sports community.

While acts of misconduct should be addressed and discouraged, it’s important to remember that they don’t represent the entire nation or its people.

Doha — Qatar is secretly helping Iran control the dissidents at the FIFA World Cup, according to a leaked audio

Doha — Qatar is secretly helping Iran control the dissidents at the FIFA World Cup, according to a leaked audio recording of the Iranian General of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

Iran International on Sunday published a detailed report about the secret collaboration of Iran and Qatar to silence the dissidents in the FIFA.

Black Reward, a human rights activist group that gained access to Fars News Agency files, leaked an audio recording of a meeting between Iran’s Revolutionary Guard general and a group of media managers or representatives from outfits affiliated with the IRGC about plans to use the sporting event to the advantage of the regime in Tehran.

General Ghasem Ghoreyshi (Qasem Qoreyshi), deputy commander of the paramilitary Basij, and a group of journalists, including one from Fars News, are featured in a six-minute audio clip from a tape. They met with General Ghoreyshi to discuss the most recent events, including World Cup preparations.

Audio

The meeting was held on November 15th.

Video Credits: Iran International

In his opening statement, Ghoreyshi claims that “anti-revolutionaries” had purchased 5,330 tickets for the match, and he continues, “Our boys have examined the list of the ticket holders and at least 500 persons” are well-known critics of the Iranian government.

This is the first piece of proof of Qatar’s cooperation with Iran, demonstrating that Qatari authorities are most likely where Iran got the list of ticket purchasers.

The Fars official then inquires with the General as to whether it is accurate that Qatar was ordered to revoke these tickets by Iran’s intelligence ministry. “Qatar has two different approaches with us”, Ghoreyshi said. “The first is a favorable response, and it has promised to do that [cancel tickets], but typically they don’t completely deliver. They advised us to provide the names of the unwanted individuals, and we would resolve the situation”.

Officials from the Islamic Republic, Basij militiamen, and regime supporters participated as “Team Melli fans” in Qatar for the 2022 World Cup.

Ghoreyshi continues by claiming that Qatar occasionally does not comply. He then used Iran International as an illustration, claiming that if Qatar wanted to ban the television network from the World Cup, it had to request documentation from Iran. He then criticizes the host nation for yet not having done so. The general is interrupted by a reporter who informs him that Iran International had just the day before reported that its reporters had been denied access to cover the games. Ghoreyshi, who was ostensibly unaware, expresses surprise and claims that Iran and Qatar discussed the matter “the day before.”

Iran International reported in mid-November that Qatar has denied its reporters and TV crew permission to enter the country and cover the World Cup. After the original agreement, authorization was denied suddenly and without explanation.

Ghoreyshi acknowledges that Iran gave Qatar protest-related “videos” in order for Qatar to impose a ban on Iran International. Like other Persian broadcasters with overseas headquarters, Iran International broadcast what appeared to be user-generated videos from the protests.

He continues by saying that Qatar has even vowed to manage people inside the stadiums by forbidding the display of Iranian flags other than the flag of the Islamic Republic.

When the games began, exactly this occurred. Security personnel blocked Iranian supporters who attempted to enter the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium in Al Rayyan with flags other than the official one authorized by the Islamic Republic during Iran’s second match against Wales on November 25. Many people were prohibited from carrying or hoisting the current wave of protesters’ principal slogan, Woman, Life, Liberty, or the country’s historic flag with the Lion and Sun insignia. Police in Qatar even held some people for several hours.

All of this resulted from the regime’s worry that opposition figures would display anti-regime behaviors that Iranians at home might watch on television. However, when the Islamic Republic song played in the stadiums, many people did chant and jeer.

This goes well with the other conversations on the tape that hackers obtained. The exchange between the IRGC general and the reporter(s) exposes a well-thought-out strategy by the Islamic Republic to use the World Cup match in Qatar to score political points in the midst of widespread protests.

According to Ghoreyshi, the Mullah regime is covering the costs for its followers to travel to Qatar to see Iran’s games and demonstrate the support for the Islamic Republic.

Images from the stadiums actually reveal that hundreds of government representatives, powerful members of the regime’s inner circle, as well as journalists from hardline media, were present.

Doha (AFP) — An India-based computer hacking gang targeted critics of the Qatar World Cup, an investigation by British journalists

Doha (AFP) — An India-based computer hacking gang targeted critics of the Qatar World Cup, an investigation by British journalists said on Sunday, as the Qatari government furiously denied it had played any part in commissioning the eavesdropping.

A database leaked to Britain’s Sunday Times and the Bureau of Investigative Journalism revealed the hacking of a dozen lawyers, journalists and famous people from 2019 “commissioned by one particular client”, the newspaper and the bureau said in a statement.

“This investigation points strongly to this client being the host of (the) World Cup: Qatar,” it said, prompting the Qatari authorities to describe the allegation as “patently false and without merit”.

Among those targeted was Michel Platini, the former head of European football.

Platini, who was hacked ahead of talks with French police about World Cup related graft claims, told AFP he was “surprised and deeply shocked” by the report.

He said he would be exploring all possible legal avenues over what appeared to be a serious “violation” of his privacy.

London-based consultant Ghanem Nuseibeh whose company Cornerstone produced a report on corruption relating to the World Cup was also targeted, the Sunday Times said in its report based on the joint investigation.

Others included Nathalie Goulet, a French senator and vocal critic of Qatar for allegedly financing “Islamic terrorism” and Mark Somos, a Germany-based lawyer, who had made a complaint about the Qatari royal family to the United Nations Human Rights Council.

More than 100 targeted

The controversy comes two weeks before the World Cup is due to kick off in the conservative Gulf state on November 20.

The newspaper alleged that the hacking was masterminded by a 31-year-old accountancy firm employee, who denies the claims.

Based in a suburb of the Indian tech city of Gurugram near Delhi, his network of computer hackers allegedly ensnared their targets using “phishing” techniques to gain access to their email inboxes, sometimes also deploying malicious software to take control of their computer cameras and microphones.

Hacking attacks were not limited, however, to those with an interest in the Qatar World Cup.

In total more than 100 victims had their private email accounts targeted by the gang “on behalf of investigators working for autocratic states, British lawyers and their wealthy clients”, the report said.

These included politicians dealing with issues relating to Russia such as Britain’s former finance minister Philip Hammond.

He was targeted during a period when he was dealing with the aftermath of the 2018 Novichok attack on former double agent Sergei Skripal which the UK has blamed on Russia.

The Swiss president and his deputy were also hacked days after the president met then British prime minister Boris Johnson to discuss Russian sanctions.

‘No evidence’

A Qatari official rejected the allegations, describing the Bureau of Investigative Journalism’s (TBIJ) report as “littered with glaring inconsistencies and falsehoods that undermine the credibility of their organisation”.

“The report relies on a single source who claims his ultimate client was Qatar, despite there being no evidence to prove it,” the official told AFP in a statement.

“Numerous companies have also boasted of non-existent ties to Qatar in an attempt to boost their profile in the run up to the World Cup.

“TBIJ’s decision to publish the report without a single piece of credible evidence to connect their allegations to Qatar raises serious concerns about their motives, which appear to be driven by political, rather than public interest, reasons,” the official added.
