Jeddah – Saudi Arabia has taken a significant step toward environmental restoration after identifying more than 165 native plant species

Jeddah – Saudi Arabia has taken a significant step toward environmental restoration after identifying more than 165 native plant species suitable for afforestation in the Asir region, one of the Kingdom’s most ecologically diverse areas.

The initiative forms part of the National Afforestation Program and reflects the country’s long-term commitment to restoring degraded land, enhancing biodiversity, and strengthening climate resilience across varied landscapes.

Asir’s geography, which ranges from coastal plains along the Red Sea to mountainous highlands and fertile valleys, offers ideal conditions for a wide variety of native vegetation adapted to different ecosystems.

Experts involved in the survey highlighted that focusing on indigenous plant species ensures higher survival rates, lower water consumption, and better harmony with existing wildlife and soil conditions.

The identified plant species are spread across mountains, slopes, plains, rocky terrain, valleys, and coastal belts, demonstrating the region’s unique ecological richness within the Kingdom.

These species belong to diverse plant families, reflecting Asir’s natural variety and reinforcing its importance as a key ecological zone for conservation and sustainable land use.

Plants selected for afforestation include large and small trees, shrubs, herbs, succulents, climbers, and flowering plants, offering flexibility for use in multiple restoration and greening projects.

Notable species include juniper, wild olive, sycamore fig, grey mangrove, henna, hawthorn, arak, and wild jasmine, all of which play important roles in soil stability and habitat support.

Environmental specialists have described the initiative as a milestone in preserving native flora while ensuring that future afforestation projects align with sustainable development principles.

The program also supports national sustainability objectives connected to broader environmental strategies aimed at increasing vegetation cover and reversing the effects of land degradation.

Officials emphasized that native plants are naturally suited to local climatic conditions, making them cost-effective and environmentally sound choices for large-scale afforestation.

Community participation has been identified as a core pillar of the initiative, with planting campaigns, volunteer programs, and environmental awareness efforts encouraging public involvement.

Collaboration between government bodies, private sector partners, and nonprofit organizations has strengthened the reach and effectiveness of afforestation activities nationwide.

Parallel initiatives in other regions of the Kingdom are complementing Asir’s efforts by expanding research infrastructure and seed production capabilities.

In the Jouf region, specialized nurseries and seed research stations have been established to meet growing demand for native seedlings and reliable seed sources.

These facilities focus on research, cultivation, and long-term storage, ensuring a consistent supply of high-quality native plants for restoration projects.

Thousands of trees and shrubs are already being cultivated annually, supporting habitat rehabilitation and reinforcing natural ecosystems within protected reserves.

Training programs for specialists have enhanced operational capacity, ensuring that afforestation projects are managed using scientific and sustainable practices.

Seed collection from multiple natural sites allows for genetic diversity, strengthening plant resilience and supporting long-term ecological balance.

Together, these nationwide efforts highlight Saudi Arabia’s integrated approach to environmental protection, combining science, community engagement, and sustainable planning.

The focus on native plants underscores a broader vision of harmonizing development with nature, ensuring that environmental restoration supports future generations.

Sao Paula — Brazil has officially opened three weeks of high-impact events leading up to the COP30 Climate Summit, marking a milestone in its commitment to global climate action and sustainable development.

The events, held across Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Belém, aim to inspire cooperation among governments, businesses, and civil society while showcasing Brazil’s leadership in renewable energy and environmental protection.

The opening week brings together government officials, business leaders, and environmental experts determined to strengthen international partnerships for a cleaner, greener planet.

The initiative also underscores Brazil’s long-standing role in shaping global climate dialogue, building on the legacy of the 1992 Rio Earth Summit.

In São Paulo, leading business coalitions gathered to advocate for stronger incentives to support the energy transition. Representatives from more than 100,000 companies signed a joint declaration emphasizing the importance of clean energy financing and multilateral cooperation.

The appeal highlights the private sector’s growing recognition that sustainable development and profitability can go hand in hand.

Riyadh – The Qassim region has taken another major step toward environmental sustainability and climate resilience with the launch of

Riyadh – The Qassim region has taken another major step toward environmental sustainability and climate resilience with the launch of its annual tree-planting campaign, led by Qassim Governor Prince Faisal bin Mishaal bin Saud.

The initiative marks the start of this year’s afforestation season and underscores Saudi Arabia’s strong commitment to ecological preservation and sustainable development under the broader umbrella of the Saudi Green Initiative.

The drive, organized in collaboration with the National Center for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification, reflects the Kingdom’s growing efforts to restore vegetation cover, combat land degradation, and create healthier, greener communities.

The campaign’s central aim is to expand the Kingdom’s green footprint, protect biodiversity, and enhance the overall quality of life for future generations.

During the launch, Prince Faisal praised the national leadership for its continued support of environmental initiatives that have transformed both urban and rural landscapes across Saudi Arabia

He emphasized that projects like these are vital in promoting environmental balance, conserving natural resources, and combating the ongoing challenges of desertification.

“The support of our wise leadership is a driving force behind these efforts,” the governor stated, adding that sustainability has become a shared responsibility for citizens, government bodies, and the private sector alike.

The governor also highlighted Qassim’s impressive achievements under the Green Qassim Land Initiative, which has already planted more than 7 million seedlings across the region.

This accomplishment not only enhances the natural beauty of Qassim but also contributes directly to the goals of the Saudi Green Initiative, launched by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, which aims to plant 10 billion trees across the Kingdom in the coming decades.

Prince Faisal explained that the afforestation drive plays a crucial role in reducing carbon emissions, improving air quality, and mitigating the impacts of climate change.

Trees act as natural air purifiers, help lower temperatures, and support the restoration of soil health — all of which are key to ensuring a sustainable and prosperous future.

The initiative also focuses on protecting local ecosystems and wildlife habitats, ensuring that the region’s rich natural heritage is preserved for generations to come.

Qassim Municipality has played an active role in this green transformation, spearheading programs that focus on increasing green cover, organizing awareness campaigns, and promoting a culture of environmental responsibility among residents.

The municipality has also encouraged volunteerism, inviting schools, universities, and community organizations to take part in planting activities and environmental clean-up efforts.

These programs are designed not only to expand green spaces but also to inspire a sense of environmental stewardship among citizens.

In addition to tree planting, the region is working to address pollution and harmful environmental practices. Public education campaigns have been introduced to promote responsible water usage, reduce waste, and encourage recycling.

Such initiatives reflect a growing awareness of the need for sustainable living and align closely with the objectives of Vision 2030, which prioritizes environmental protection as a cornerstone of national progress.

Environmental experts in the region have also noted that tree-planting efforts like these contribute to reducing desert encroachment — one of the key environmental challenges in arid regions such as Qassim.

The newly planted trees help stabilize soil, reduce erosion, and support groundwater retention, making them vital tools in the Kingdom’s fight against desertification.

The governor’s leadership in advancing green initiatives has positioned Qassim as a model for other regions to follow. Under his guidance, the region has become known for its sustainable landscaping projects, eco-friendly urban planning, and community-driven environmental awareness programs.

His vision reflects a deep understanding that environmental health is essential to both social well-being and economic development.

As the 2025 afforestation season progresses, the Qassim governorate remains committed to expanding its efforts through partnerships with local municipalities, private companies, and volunteers.

With each tree planted, the region takes another step toward fulfilling the Kingdom’s vision of a greener, cleaner, and more sustainable Saudi Arabia.

The new planting season in Qassim is more than an environmental campaign — it is a powerful symbol of hope and renewal.

It embodies the Kingdom’s dedication to creating harmony between development and nature while ensuring a healthier, more vibrant future for all.
