Bengaluru (Reuters) – India’s Karnataka High Court on Friday dismissed Twitter’s plea challenging the federal government’s orders to block tweets

Bengaluru (Reuters) – India’s Karnataka High Court on Friday dismissed Twitter’s plea challenging the federal government’s orders to block tweets and accounts and imposed a fine of 5 million rupees ($60,943.65), a lawyer for Twitter told Reuters.

The decision comes weeks after Twitter’s ex-CEO and co-founder Jack Dorsey accused India of threatening to shut down the social media platform in the country unless it complied with orders to restrict accounts critical of the handling of farmer protests in 2021, a charge which Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government had called a “lie.”

The court on Friday ruled that Twitter was served notices, to which it did not comply, India’s Deputy Minister for Information Technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar said in a tweet.

Twitter could not be immediately reached for a comment on the verdict.

The U.S.-based firm had last year asked the court to overturn some government orders to remove content from the social media platform.

This followed an order from the authorities to act on its content – including accounts supportive of an independent Sikh state, posts alleged to have spread misinformation about protests by farmers and tweets critical of the government’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“So you have not given any reason why you delayed compliance, more than a year of delay… then all of sudden you comply and approach the court,” the bench said during the verdict on Friday, Chandrasekhar tweeted.

Jack Dorsey, former Twitter CEO alleges that during the farmer protest Indian govt pressurized us(Twitter) and said we will shut down Twitter in India, raid the homes of your employees if you don’t listen to us. pic.twitter.com/tnNYta5G20
— Megh Updates (@MeghUpdates) June 12, 2023

“You are not a farmer but a billon dollar company.”

Last year, in a filing with the top court in the southern Indian state of Karnataka, Twitter had argued that some removal orders fell short of the procedural requirements of India’s IT act, Reuters had reported.

The country’s IT act allows the government to block public access to content in the interest of national security, among other reasons.

Twitter has been going through a transformative phase since Elon Musk acquired the platform last year, with advertisers slowing spending and the company losing nearly 80% of its staff.

Washington/New Delhi (Reuters) – India threatened to shut Twitter down unless it complied with orders to restrict accounts critical of

Washington/New Delhi (Reuters) – India threatened to shut Twitter down unless it complied with orders to restrict accounts critical of the government’s handling of farmer protests, co-founder Jack Dorsey said, an accusation Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government called an “outright lie”.

Dorsey, who quit as Twitter CEO in 2021, said on Monday that India also threatened the company with raids on employees if it did not comply with government requests to take down certain posts.

“It manifested in ways such as: ‘We will shut Twitter down in India’, which is a very large market for us; ‘we will raid the homes of your employees’, which they did; And this is India, a democratic country,” Dorsey said in an interview with YouTube news show Breaking Points.

Deputy Minister for Information Technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar, a top ranking official in Modi’s government, lashed out against Dorsey in response, calling his assertions an “outright lie”.

“No one went to jail nor was Twitter ‘shut down’. Dorsey’s Twitter regime had a problem accepting the sovereignty of Indian law,” he said in a post on Twitter.

This is an outright lie by @jack – perhaps an attempt to brush out that very dubious period of twitters history

Facts and truth@twitter undr Dorsey n his team were in repeated n continuous violations of India law. As a matter of fact they were in non-compliance with law… https://t.co/SlzmTcS3Fa
— Rajeev Chandrasekhar (@Rajeev_GoI) June 13, 2023

Dorsey’s comments again put the spotlight on the struggles faced by foreign technology giants operating under Modi’s rule. His government has often criticized Google, Facebook and Twitter for not doing enough to tackle fake or “anti-India” content on their platforms, or for not complying with rules.

The former Twitter CEO’s comments drew widespread attention as it is unusual for global companies operating in India to publicly criticise the government. Last year, Xiaomi in a court filing said India’s financial crime agency threatened its executives with “physical violence” and coercion, an allegation which the agency denied.

Dorsey also mentioned similar pressure from governments in Turkey and Nigeria, which had restricted the platform in their nations at different points over the years before lifting those bans.

Twitter was bought by Elon Musk in a $44 billion deal last year.

Chandrasekhar said Twitter under Dorsey and his team had repeatedly violated Indian law. He didn’t name Musk, but added Twitter had been in compliance since June 2022.

Big Tech VS Modi

Modi and his ministers are prolific users of Twitter, but free speech activists say his administration resorts to excessive censorship of content it thinks is critical of its working. India maintains its content removal orders are aimed at protecting users and sovereignty of the state.

The public spat with Twitter during 2021 saw Modi’s government seeking an “emergency blocking” of the “provocative” Twitter hashtag “#ModiPlanningFarmerGenocide” and dozens of accounts. Farmers’ groups had been protesting against new agriculture laws at the time, one of the biggest challenges faced by the Modi government.

The government later gave in to the farmers’ demands.

Twitter initially complied with the government requests but later restored most of the accounts, citing “insufficient justification”, leading to officials threatening legal consequences.

In subsequent weeks, police visited a Twitter office as part of another probe linked to tagging of some ruling party posts as manipulated. Twitter at the time said it was worried about staff safety.

Dorsey in his interview said many India content take down requests during the farmer protests were “around particular journalists that were critical of the government.”

Since Modi took office in 2014, India has slid from 140th in World Press Freedom Index to 161 this year, out of 180 countries, its lowest ranking ever.

by Ghaith Tamimi

Surprisingly, within minutes. I found terrifying armies of fake accounts affiliated with Qatar. Yes Qatar.

First of all, thanks to all my great friends who supported me during the suspension of my account after I posted the below tweet:

Welcome to #Qatar bots ??

????????????
الذباب الإلكتروني القطري
????????????

Copy/Paste

(#قطر تؤكد على موقفها الثابت من #القضية_الفلسطينية ) pic.twitter.com/rv3nF8HcVX
— Ghaith (@GAITAMIMI1) September 22, 2020

I was expecting Twitter to take an action against these fake accounts. Instead, the action was taken against me and my account got suspended right after that tweet! Then, I decided to make sure that I was not mistaken as a bot with real humans, and thanks for my account suspension. I got excited to read more and do some researches about these fake accounts or commonly called bots and if they are really prohibited by Twitter.

Then I found something like, “As per Twitter, their power to identify and remove these behaviors are more sophisticated than ever”. So I decided to see how sophisticated they are.

While I was searching about bots, I was surprised that the country that complains most about bots is Qatar and the country most accused of spreading bots is my homeland, Saudi Arabia. Surprising isn’t it?

I can’t completely deny that accusation, but I am active on Twitter, and I do not remember that we never came across these armies of the fake Saudi accounts they are talking about. I haven’t found a single hashtag in which I noticeably saw fake Saudi accounts backing it up!

So where are these fake accounts that Qatar main media arms @AJEnglish and @AJArabic have always reported about, that these fake Saudi accounts ‘ruined’ Twitter in the Middle East! Either they are so good in hiding or simply they don’t not exist.

After days of searching for these Saudi armies of bots, I gave up and decided to dig more and search in general for the bots from anywhere regardless of their origin.

Surprisingly, within minutes. I found terrifying armies of fake accounts affiliated with Qatar. Yes Qatar.

I was surprised to find exact photo and exact words, with exact Hashtags. Coincidently, on the exact day and the exact hour with “funny” names.

I could not believe my eyes. Qatari media’s continuous accusation against Saudi Arabia about the Twitter bots that’s targeting Qatar, Turkey and Iran was just a cover-up for their day-to-day bots operations which is primarily targeting Saudi Arabia.

They are not just targeting Saudi Arabia, but also implementing Qatar’s political agenda by glorifying the Qatari regime and Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey, and even supporting news posts from Al-Jazeera English and Arabic.

These Qatari bots are in thousands and thousands. And to realize the unbelievable magnitude of their operations and numbers, see the below clip with fast scrolling.

1️⃣2️⃣

These Qatari bots are in thousands and thousands! ?????

To realize the unbelievable magnitude of thier operations and numbers, see the below clip of fast scrolling!

Note that it is just a cut from 10:45 minutes original full scrolling at ONLY one hashtag! ?

?
?
? pic.twitter.com/REER2Qds0v
— Ghaith (@GAITAMIMI1) September 24, 2020

I believe it is not a hard job for Twitter Safety team to identify these Qatari bots. In fact, you can try it yourself and visit the hashtag: #QatarTurkey, and you will find the Aj Jazeera English news posted the exact hashtag with exact words, photo and on the same day. In fact, it is just a mere copy-paste bots process.

They all joined in 2020, in the year where Twitter’s power to identify them is more sophisticated. They all have fake funny profiles with 0 or 1 follower.

All these forged accounts are affiliated with Qatar, and they support Qatar’s media channels such as Al Jazeera English and Al Jazeera Arabic, as well as their broadcasters, Qatari politicians, athletes and media professionals, in addition to the fake accounts that oppose Saudi Arabia.

by Dr. Areej Hussain

Yet nowhere you would find The New Arab article mentioning this part of the drama, which was the main message of this episode…

The biased pro-Muslim Brotherhood Qatari newspaper The New Arab (Al-Araby Al-Jadeed) plays an extremely hypocritical role in falsely claiming that the Saudi drama Series Exit 7 aired in Ramadan defends homosexuality and attacked Palestinians and encouraged normalization with Israel.

The New Arab (العربي الجديد) headquartered in London was first launched in March 2014 by an Israeli ex-parliament member Dr. Azmi Bishra as an Arabic online news website by Qatari company Fadaat Media which was later established as a daily newspaper. An English version of the website The New Arab was inaugurated shortly after the newspaper’s launch.

Ever since this news outlet is on its mission by fabricated news and misinterpreting the news to deceive its vast majority of non-Arab audience, in order to reach their goals to kindle the fire of rivalry between Arabs and Muslims, especially against Saudis and its allied Arab nations.

Anyone who knows Arabic and watched the episodes knows very well that The New Arab is lying and producing fake news to work on their agenda which is opposite to what they claim that they are speaking on the behalf of Arabs.

Defending Homosexuality?

The New Arab states, “In a scene broadcast on Saudi MBC channel’s ‘Exit 7’, two of the main characters discussed the topic of homosexuality, with one defending the rights of the LGBTQ community.”

In an actual fact, the serial shows a conversation between actress Aseel Omran, the daughter, and actor Nasser Al-Qasabi, the father in which the daughter has clear doubts about homosexuality and her father’s approach was that the homosexuals should be punished. In stating so The New Arab (Al-Araby Al-Jadeed) purposely fails to the answering.

The script goes like this, the daughter asks “if you are a believer of human rights, then you would have to accept that these are humans who have rights, they are living their lives and we have no business [criticizing them]. Are they not humans?”

The father replies, “Of course not, they are not humans. Allahu Akbar!! As long as they are going against the nature that Allah has created them with, they are not humans.”

Then, she asks again, “How are we to judge, maybe they have psychological issues?”

He says, “Whether they have psychological problems or plague, they must seek treatment. And if they don’t find a treatment then practice abstinence, but going out and being proud of it and bragging about it is immoral and promiscuous. And if the people started to follow them, that’s a totally different topic”.

She continues to question, “But they didn’t ask anyone to follow them”.

The father continues with his wise approach, “My daughter if they started to promote their culture [of homosexuality], shameful things will happen. If people started to notice it, accept it and look at it as if it was a normal thing, and then the whole humanity with be destroyed”.

After watching the entire episode and understanding it one can unmistakably see that main character Nasser Al-Qasabi, the father clears out all the doubts his daughter has regarding homosexuals and gives highly satisfying answers that are in accordance with the Arab and Muslim society and the Islamic culture.

It was clear from this episode that the message given by the drama series Exit 7 is loud and clear that it doesn’t approve of homosexuality let alone defending it contrary to what The New Arab (Al-Araby Al-Jadeed) depicts.

Furthermore, The New Arab continues with its agenda in trying to misguide their English speaking audience by painting a pleasant picture of the Turkish president, Rajab Tayab Erdogan as true believer of Islam, and Caliph of Muslims by stating that since he “defended a top religious official who claimed homosexuality caused diseases, corrupted people and condemned in Islamic teaching.”

However, the article fails to answer posed questions by the minds of the readers that if the Othman Caliph Erdogan is pious as proclaims in his highly charged speeches, then why doesn’t he abolish the laws under which the gay marriage and changing one’s sex is legal in Turkey?

Normalization with Israel?

“This entire episode was a clear attempt to normalize the audience’s minds over Israel” is another false accusation made by The New Arab.

The conversations between the two friends goes on like this:
The main character, Nasser Al-Qasabi says, “You are saying that you want to do business with Israelis while they are our enemies?

Rashid Al-Shamrani, playing the friend of the main character, says, “The enemy is the one who doesn’t stand by you and curses you day and night more than the Israelis. We lost lives . . . we fought wars . . .we cut oil supply. . . for the sake of Palestine and the day it became an authority, we paid its salaries even though we [the Saudi people] were in need of this money. Yet they take every opportunity to attack Saudi Arabia.”

Nasser Al-Qasabi replies, “Don’t confuse different issues, the five fingers are not the same! As the Palestinians who were forced to leave their land in 1948 and were exposed to the brutal killings, there were those who sold their lands to the Israelis. Likewise, there were Palestinians in the Intifada who faced the Israeli tanks with their chests opened, there are those who are building the separation wall. The Palestinians are humans like all the other nationalities; there are amongst them good and there are those who are bad, there are those who are grateful and there are those who are faithful, and there are those who are deluded, and those who are well aware [of reality]. The reality is that the Israel is the one who is creating the animosity between Palestinians and the rest of the Arabs. We will stand with the truth, our principles and conscience.”

Once again, The New Arab gives a totally different version of the entire episode by lying that the drama leads towards advocating the “Israeli normalization in ‘new’ Saudi Arabic”.

But in reality, as the main character (Nasser Al-Qasabi) debates with his friend (Rashid Al-Shamrani) by defending Palestinians that they are just humans like us even if they made mistakes in the past, we should not give up on our principles, our beliefs and the truth that Palestine belongs to Palestinians. Yet nowhere you would find The New Arab article mentioning this part of the drama, which was the main message of this episode.

The New Arab claims that, “Saudi Twitter users were left outraged this week”.

However the reality is totally the opposite, many twitter users say that it presented the right point of view of the current situation not what Qatari based News paper claims. And has a lot of respect of who played a devil’s advocate in the episode in order to teach people their right concept regarding Palestine.

For instance, Qasim al Qasim tweeted, “What distinguishes ⁧Rashed al-Shamrani that he has a Doctorate in Psychology and he focuses on playing the role of real life examples through his knowledge and profession”.

ما يميز #راشد_الشمراني دكتوراة في علم النفس.!!
يركز على الأدوار السيكلوجيه للناس.!!
فأخذها علم ومهنه.!! pic.twitter.com/cGpYZw0JYF
— قاسم القاسم (@QaAlQasim) May 9, 2020

A twitter verified Saudi-handle of Khalf Al-Harbi stated that, “Whoever watches the third episode of Exit 7, will complete understand easily that it is against normalization and that the able-artist Rashid Al-Shamrani was playing the role of a fraudulent opportunist, but the channel that received the Israeli Prime Minister Peres and wandering in its corridors wants to throw its blame and disgrace over its opponents”.

Another Saudi twitter handle of Saleh Al-Kharashi tweeted, “Al Jazeera and the Muslim Brotherhood are making a big fuss about the actor Rashid Al-Shamrani’s statement on the issue of Palestine and Israel, he digs out the old picture of Ismail Haniyeh, the leader of Hamas kissing the hand of an Israeli soilder, he questions ‘what does this picture mean to the people of Palestinian resistance?'”
