BERLIN- A U.S. citizen infected with the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus in the Democratic Republic of Congo was admitted to Frankfurt University Hospital early on Monday, as health authorities said the patient’s condition was stable and posed no risk to the public.

The patient arrived at the hospital’s high-security isolation unit at about 3:00 a.m. local time (0100 GMT), according to hospital officials. The specialized facility is designed to treat highly infectious diseases under strict containment measures.

Timo Wolf, head of the hospital’s special isolation unit, said the patient’s condition was currently stable. The hospital said the individual was being treated in complete isolation in a unit that is structurally and operationally separated from the rest of the medical facility.

Hospital officials stressed that there was no risk to other patients or the general public because of the stringent infection-control measures in place.

The admission follows confirmation by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Friday that a U.S. citizen working for a humanitarian organization in the Democratic Republic of Congo had tested positive for the Bundibugyo variant of the Ebola virus.

The case comes as the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo continues to expand. The country’s public health institute said on Monday that confirmed infections had risen to 1,926, including 702 deaths.

Health authorities also reported that the outbreak has spread to two additional provinces, Haut-Uele and Tshopo, underscoring continuing efforts to contain the virus.

The latest medical evacuation follows another recent case involving an American aid worker. In June, a U.S. citizen who had contracted Ebola in Congo and was transferred to Berlin for treatment was discharged from Charité hospital after receiving medical care.

Germany has specialized facilities capable of treating patients with highly infectious diseases, including Ebola, under strict biosecurity protocols. Such transfers are typically carried out using dedicated medical evacuation procedures designed to minimize any risk of transmission.

The Bundibugyo strain is one of several known species of the Ebola virus and requires intensive supportive medical care and strict infection prevention measures during treatment.
