Dubai— Two young Palestinian artists in the Gaza Strip are transforming bomb-damaged walls and piles of rubble into large-scale murals

Dubai— Two young Palestinian artists in the Gaza Strip are transforming bomb-damaged walls and piles of rubble into large-scale murals honoring international supporters, using art to project messages of resilience and gratitude as the war and humanitarian crisis continue.

Obay Al-Qarshli, 21, and Ahmed Al-Halabi, 23, have drawn attention online after painting a mural of Spanish football player Lamine Yamal amid the ruins of Gaza.

The artists said their work seeks to acknowledge international figures and activists who have voiced support for Palestinians during the conflict.

“We try to thank every person who supports Gaza and send them a message of gratitude from Gaza,” Al-Qarshli told Arab News. “We in Gaza see them, we recognize them, and we appreciate what they are doing for us.”

The pair said the project began with a mural dedicated to Brazilian activist Thiago Avila, who participated in the Global Sumud Flotilla launched from Spain in April in an attempt to deliver aid to Gaza and challenge Israel’s blockade.

According to the artists, Avila later shared the mural on social media, helping bring international visibility to their work.

The paintings are created under severe wartime conditions, with limited access to paint, damaged infrastructure and ongoing insecurity across Gaza after months of Israeli military operations that began in October 2023.

“Something that used to cost $5 now costs $20,” Al-Qarshli said of art supplies, adding that the materials are difficult to locate and often require long travel through devastated neighborhoods.

The artists said they frequently work atop unstable debris and partially collapsed buildings because few intact walls remain.

“Even if Gaza becomes only ruins, we will still deliver our message to the world,” Al-Halabi said.
Before the war, both artists said they worked in studios, participated in exhibitions and hoped to pursue international artistic careers through scholarships and residency programs abroad.

Al-Halabi said some of his artwork had been exhibited in Europe and the United States, but restrictions on movement and border closures prevented him from accompanying his work overseas.

“I want my art to be displayed abroad, but why can’t I stand next to it?” he said.
Al-Qarshli said approximately 30 of his earlier works, including pieces previously displayed in galleries and a local museum in Gaza, were destroyed after the conflict began.

He stopped painting for a period before resuming with a piece depicting repeated displacement experienced by Gazans during the war.

Both artists said they had received educational opportunities abroad, including a university acceptance in Germany, but remained unable to leave Gaza because of restrictions on movement.

The conflict has severely disrupted daily life in Gaza, where shortages of electricity, water, food and fuel continue to affect residents and limit artistic work, including access to lighting and transportation.

Jerusalem- Israel deported two foreign activists detained aboard a Gaza-bound aid flotilla on Sunday after authorities accused them of links

Jerusalem- Israel deported two foreign activists detained aboard a Gaza-bound aid flotilla on Sunday after authorities accused them of links to unlawful activity, in the latest confrontation over efforts to challenge Israel’s blockade of the Palestinian enclave.

The Israeli foreign ministry said Spanish activist Saif Abu Keshek and Brazilian activist Thiago Avila were expelled after being arrested on April 29 when Israeli forces intercepted the Global Sumud Flotilla in international waters and escorted the vessel to Israel.

According to the foreign ministry, Abu Keshek was suspected of affiliation with a terrorist organization, while Avila was suspected of illegal activity. Both activists rejected the allegations, saying they had participated in a humanitarian mission aimed at delivering aid to civilians in Gaza and describing their detention outside Israeli territorial waters as unlawful.

The activists were part of a second Global Sumud Flotilla mission launched from Spain on April 12 in an attempt to breach Israel’s long-standing blockade on Gaza by sea.

Images released from court proceedings earlier this month showed both men appearing before Israeli judicial authorities following their detention.

Israel has maintained tight restrictions on Gaza since Hamas took control of the territory in 2007, citing security concerns and the need to prevent weapons smuggling. Hamas, which governs much of the enclave, is designated as a terrorist organization by Israel, the United States and several Western governments.

International scrutiny over access to humanitarian aid has intensified during the Gaza war triggered by Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023, attack on southern Israel. The conflict has displaced large portions of Gaza’s population and sharply increased dependence on external assistance.

Humanitarian agencies and international organizations have repeatedly warned that aid deliveries into Gaza remain insufficient to meet civilian needs amid widespread destruction and deteriorating living conditions.

The flotilla interception has also drawn criticism from some United Nations experts and rights advocates, who have questioned the legality of detaining activists operating in international waters.

Madrid – Spain on Thursday summoned Israel’s top envoy in Madrid to protest the continued detention of a Spanish activist

Madrid – Spain on Thursday summoned Israel’s top envoy in Madrid to protest the continued detention of a Spanish activist intercepted aboard a Gaza-bound aid flotilla, deepening diplomatic tensions between the two countries over Israel’s conduct in the war in Gaza.

Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares said the Israeli charge d’affaires was called in to receive Madrid’s protest over what he described as the “unacceptable and intolerable” extension of the detention of Saif Abu Keshek, a Spanish citizen of Palestinian origin detained after Israeli forces intercepted the Global Sumud Flotilla in international waters near Greece last week.

An Israeli court has extended the detention of Abu Keshek and Brazilian activist Thiago Avila until Sunday, despite calls from international rights groups and foreign governments for their release. Israeli authorities have not filed formal charges against either activist.

The flotilla was the second maritime initiative in the past year aimed at challenging Israel’s blockade on Gaza, where shortages of food, medicine, water and fuel have intensified during the war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas.

Israeli forces intercepted the vessel and deported several activists to Europe while detaining Abu Keshek and Avila. Rights organizations have alleged the detainees were subjected to abuse while in custody, accusations Israeli authorities have denied.

The latest dispute underscores the widening rupture in relations between Spain and Israel since the outbreak of the Gaza conflict following Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023 attack on Israel. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has repeatedly criticized Israel’s military campaign in Gaza and previously described it as a “genocide,” a characterization Israel strongly rejects.

Diplomatic ties deteriorated further after Spain formally recognized a Palestinian state in 2024, prompting Israel to recall its ambassador from Madrid. Spain later dismissed its own ambassador to Tel Aviv in March.

The diplomatic clash coincided with Madrid’s decision to honor Francesca Albanese, the United Nations special rapporteur on human rights in the occupied Palestinian territories, with the Order of Civil Merit.

Sanchez’s office said Albanese was recognized for her work documenting alleged violations of international law in Gaza. Albanese has repeatedly accused Israel of committing genocide during the conflict, allegations Israel denies, accusing critics of antisemitism.

The United States has imposed sanctions on Albanese, accusing her of “biased and malicious” criticism of both Washington and Israel. Spain has urged the European Commission to prevent the U.S. sanctions from being enforced within the European Union.

France and Germany have also criticized Albanese and called for her resignation over remarks referring to a “common enemy of humanity,” although Albanese has denied that the statement was directed at Israel.

Ashkelon — An Israeli court on Tuesday extended the detention of two foreign activists detained from a Gaza-bound flotilla until

Ashkelon — An Israeli court on Tuesday extended the detention of two foreign activists detained from a Gaza-bound flotilla until Sunday, as authorities in Israel continue to question them over alleged security-related offenses, according to a rights group representing the pair.

Spanish national Saif Abu Keshek and Brazilian national Thiago Avila appeared before a court in Ashkelon for a second hearing, after being brought to Israel last week following the interception of their vessel by Israeli forces off the coast of Greece.“The court approved their detention until Sunday morning,” said Miriam Azem of Adalah, which is providing legal representation.

An AFP journalist witnessed the activists being escorted into the courtroom with their legs shackled. The two were among dozens of individuals aboard a flotilla that had set sail from France, Spain and Italy with the stated aim of delivering humanitarian supplies to Gaza and challenging Israel’s long-standing blockade.

Adalah said the activists have been on a hunger strike for six days and alleged that both were subjected to physical and psychological abuse in detention. The group said they were being held in isolation under constant high-intensity lighting, with Avila allegedly exposed to extremely cold temperatures.“They are kept blindfolded at all times whenever they are moved outside their cells, including during medical examinations,” the group said.

Israeli authorities have rejected the allegations.During an earlier hearing, prosecutors presented a list of charges including assisting the enemy during wartime and membership in, and providing services to, a terrorist organization, according to Adalah.

Defense lawyers challenged Israel’s jurisdiction, arguing the activists had been unlawfully detained in international waters.Israel’s foreign ministry said both individuals were affiliated with the Popular Conference for Palestinians Abroad, which it alleged has links to Hamas. It described Abu Keshek as a leading member and said Avila was also suspected of involvement in illegal activity.

The flotilla was part of the Global Sumud initiative, whose previous attempt last year was similarly intercepted. Israeli forces stopped the latest convoy early on Thursday off Greece’s coast.Israel has maintained a blockade on Gaza since 2007 and controls access points into the territory.

Aid flows have been severely disrupted during the ongoing war that began in October 2023, contributing to shortages of essential supplies.
