WASHINGTON-The United States marked the 250th anniversary of its independence on Saturday with nationwide celebrations overshadowed by political polarization, an intense heatwave and President Donald Trump’s warning that the country’s identity is under renewed threat.

The milestone commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence comes at a moment of sharp partisan divisions, with Trump using the anniversary to reinforce his political message ahead of the November midterm elections while millions of Americans reflected on the country’s achievements and unresolved challenges.

Extreme temperatures across much of the United States also shaped the day’s events. Heat warnings covered roughly 160 million people, forcing organizers in several communities to alter or disrupt parades, outdoor gatherings and Independence Day festivities.

Despite the soaring temperatures, Trump proceeded with an ambitious schedule that placed him at the center of the national celebrations. He was due to hold a large rally on Washington’s National Mall featuring military flyovers and an expansive fireworks display, describing the event as the world’s largest fireworks show.

The president also joked that he intended to deliver a lengthy speech despite temperatures expected to reach about 41 degrees Celsius (107 degrees Fahrenheit), presenting it as evidence of his endurance.

On Friday evening, Trump delivered remarks at Mount Rushmore National Memorial, where he praised the nation’s history and celebrated what he described as American exceptionalism. Speaking beneath the granite sculptures of Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt, he argued that the country’s identity was facing a renewed challenge.

Trump accused domestic “radicals and extremists” of attempting to undermine American values and warned of what he described as a resurgence of communist influence within the country. His comments echoed themes that have featured prominently in recent weeks as progressive candidates aligned with the Democratic Party’s left wing secured victories in several primary elections.

The president has repeatedly portrayed those political developments as a broader ideological threat ahead of November’s congressional elections. In his Mount Rushmore speech, he said recent years had seen efforts to weaken Americans’ connection with their history and national spirit.

Although his remarks were less confrontational than some of his previous speeches on immigration, Trump reiterated that commitment to American values should define national belonging, saying people did not have to be born in the United States but should appreciate what the country had built.

Mount Rushmore provided a symbolic backdrop for the address. Some of Trump’s supporters have introduced legislation proposing that his likeness be added to the monument alongside the four presidents already carved into the mountainside.

Beyond official ceremonies, the anniversary prompted broader public reflection on the country’s trajectory after two and a half centuries marked by independence, territorial expansion, slavery, civil war, economic growth and global leadership.

A Quinnipiac University poll found that 61 percent of Americans believe the country is not fully living up to the ideals expressed in the Declaration of Independence. The survey also highlighted a sharp partisan divide, with most Republicans expressing confidence that the nation remains faithful to those principles, while most Democrats disagreed.

Americans interviewed during the celebrations expressed contrasting views about the country’s future. Los Angeles artist Johnny Presley voiced frustration with political and social divisions, saying he was troubled by how Americans treated one another and their foreign neighbors.

Karisa Tavassoli, an American-Iranian educator based in Atlanta, said the United States continued to offer freedoms that remained worth protecting, including freedom of speech, religion and personal choice, while acknowledging that the country still had significant shortcomings.

Alonzo Coby, a member of the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes, said he appreciated the opportunity to commemorate the nation’s 250th anniversary but emphasized that Indigenous peoples had lived on the continent long before the founding of the United States, highlighting the broader historical context surrounding the celebrations.
