Paris — JD Vance departed Washington on Friday for talks in Pakistan aimed at stabilizing a fragile ceasefire between the United States and Iran, after both sides accused each other of violating the agreement.

Speaking before boarding Air Force Two, Vance said Washington was open to constructive negotiations but warned that progress would depend on Tehran’s willingness to engage in good faith.

“We’re going to try to have a positive negotiation,” Vance told reporters. “If the Iranians are willing to negotiate in good faith, we’re certainly willing to extend the open hand.”

The diplomatic effort comes amid heightened tensions following a two-week ceasefire agreement that has been repeatedly tested by mutual accusations of non-compliance.

Pakistan is hosting the talks as part of ongoing international efforts to prevent further escalation between Washington and Tehran, with the outcome seen as critical to maintaining regional stability.

Tokyo — Iran has released a Japanese national detained since January 20, Japan’s government said on Tuesday, confirming the individual was freed on April 6 and is in good health following their release.

Government spokesman Minoru Kihara said the Japanese embassy in Iran had verified the release and that Japan’s ambassador had met the individual in person after their detention ended.

“The Japanese embassy in Iran has confirmed that a Japanese national who was detained by Iranian authorities on January 20 was released on April 6 local time,” Kihara told reporters, adding the individual’s health condition had been confirmed as stable.

Japan’s NHK was reported by Kyodo News to have identified the detainee as its Tehran bureau chief, although the broadcaster did not immediately confirm the report when contacted.Media reports earlier said the individual had been transferred to a prison known for holding political detainees following their arrest in January.

Japanese officials had previously acknowledged the detention but declined to provide further details at the time.

The release marks the second such case in recent weeks, after Tokyo announced last month that another Japanese national had been freed by Iranian authorities.

Dubai — Iran rejected a U.S.-backed ceasefire proposal and refused to reopen the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday, as hostilities

Dubai — Iran rejected a U.S.-backed ceasefire proposal and refused to reopen the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday, as hostilities with Israel continued and a deadline set by Donald Trump for Tehran to comply or face major strikes loomed.

A proposal brokered by Pakistan called for an immediate ceasefire and reopening of the strait, followed by negotiations on a broader settlement within weeks, according to a source familiar with the plan. Iran declined the offer, instead outlining conditions including sanctions relief, regional de-escalation, and reconstruction measures, state media reported.

Trump reiterated threats to target Iranian infrastructure if Tehran failed to meet his demands by the deadline, warning that bridges and power plants could be destroyed. He said the United States could “take out” the country if an agreement was not reached.Fighting continued across the region.

The Israeli military said it carried out airstrikes on Iranian government infrastructure in Tehran and other areas, while intercepting missiles launched from Iran. Saudi Arabia reported intercepting ballistic missiles over its eastern region, with debris falling near energy facilities, and issued public safety alerts alongside the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain.

Iran’s envoy to the United Nations condemned the U.S. threats as a violation of international law, while senior Iranian officials dismissed Trump’s warnings. Authorities also called for civilian demonstrations to protect infrastructure sites.

A synagogue in central Tehran was damaged by a projectile, according to local media, as the conflict widened beyond military targets.Global oil markets remained under pressure, with prices hovering around $110 per barrel amid uncertainty over the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a conduit for roughly a fifth of the world’s oil and gas supply.

The continued disruption has raised concerns about inflation and energy security worldwide. The conflict, which began after U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran in late February, has led to thousands of casualties across the region.

A U.S. fighter jet was also downed last week, underscoring the escalating risks for Washington as the crisis deepens.

Tehran — An airstrike on a residential building near the city of Eslamshar southwest of Tehran killed at least 13

Tehran — An airstrike on a residential building near the city of Eslamshar southwest of Tehran killed at least 13 people early Monday, Iranian media reported, as a wave of attacks struck multiple locations across the country.

The semiofficial Fars news agency and Nour News said the strike targeted a residential area, though the intended objective remained unclear. Neither Israel nor the United States immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, which followed escalating threats from Washington over Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

Separate airstrikes also hit Iran’s capital, Tehran, before dawn, with explosions reported across the city and the sound of fighter jets heard intermittently for hours. Iranian authorities did not immediately provide details on the targets or casualties from those strikes.

Iranian media said Sharif University of Technology in Tehran was among the sites hit, with damage reported to campus buildings and a nearby natural gas distribution facility. The university has previously faced international sanctions over alleged links to Iran’s ballistic missile program, though it was unclear what specific facilities were targeted.

In the city of Qom, south of the capital, an airstrike on a residential area killed at least five people, according to the state-run IRAN newspaper. Authorities did not specify the intended target of that strike.

Iran’s science minister said more than 30 universities across the country have been hit since the conflict began in late February, underscoring the widening scope of the bombardment. Iran has not released updated nationwide casualty figures in recent days.

The latest strikes come amid sustained attacks on military and infrastructure sites, with Iranian security forces reportedly using alternative locations as bases after repeated strikes on established facilities.

The conflict has also forced the closure of schools nationwide, with classes moved online, and disrupted key infrastructure, including energy distribution networks.

Tehran — Iran’s parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf condemned U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats to strike Iranian infrastructure, as tensions

Tehran — Iran’s parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf condemned U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats to strike Iranian infrastructure, as tensions over the closure of the Strait of Hormuz intensified and raised concerns about global energy and trade flows.

Qalibaf described the threats as “reckless” in a social media post, saying Washington would gain nothing through escalation and urging respect for Iran’s rights. Iran’s mission to the United Nations said the warnings amounted to “a direct and public incitement to terrorize civilians,” calling on the international community to intervene.

The statements came as Iran has effectively halted cargo traffic through the Strait of Hormuz during the conflict, a critical chokepoint for global oil and gas shipments. The disruption has contributed to rising energy prices and heightened volatility in international markets.

Russia also criticized Washington’s stance, urging a return to negotiations. The Russian foreign ministry, citing a call between Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his Iranian counterpart, said the United States should abandon “the language of ultimatums.”

Iranian officials signaled the crisis could widen beyond the Gulf. Ali Akbar Velayati, an adviser to Iran’s supreme leader, warned that allied groups could target the Bab el-Mandeb Strait at the southern entrance to the Red Sea, a route that typically handles around 12 percent of global trade.

Iran leads a network of allied groups across the region, including in Lebanon, Iraq and Yemen, where Houthi forces have previously attacked shipping lanes.Tehran has also introduced conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

Presidential spokesperson Seyyed Mohammad Mehdi Tabatabaei said transit could resume only if a portion of revenues is allocated to compensate Iran for war-related damages.Trump has said the United States would strike Iranian power plants and bridges if the strait is not reopened, setting a deadline that further escalated tensions.

In remarks reported over the weekend, he reiterated the threat of military action if maritime traffic remains blocked.Iran’s culture minister Sayed Reza Salihi-Amiri dismissed the warnings, describing Trump as inconsistent and saying Iranian society does not take his statements seriously.

The standoff underscores the strategic importance of maritime chokepoints in the Middle East and the potential for disruption to ripple through global energy markets and trade networks.

Washington— The United States, Iran and regional mediators are discussing a potential 45-day ceasefire as part of a broader two-phase

Washington— The United States, Iran and regional mediators are discussing a potential 45-day ceasefire as part of a broader two-phase framework to end the ongoing conflict, Axios reported on Sunday, citing sources familiar with the negotiations.

According to the report, which cited four U.S., Israeli and regional sources, the proposed arrangement would begin with a temporary ceasefire lasting 45 days, during which negotiators would seek to reach a permanent agreement to end the war.

A second phase would focus on finalizing terms for a comprehensive settlement. The report said the ceasefire period could be extended if additional time is needed to conclude negotiations.

Reuters could not independently verify the Axios report, and neither the White House nor the U.S. State Department immediately responded to requests for comment.

The development comes as tensions remain high, with U.S. President Donald Trump reiterating a deadline for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz or face potential strikes on critical infrastructure.

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Trump said the deadline would expire on Tuesday evening.

Washington– U.S. President Donald Trump said on Sunday the United States would target Iran’s power plants and bridges on Tuesday

Washington– U.S. President Donald Trump said on Sunday the United States would target Iran’s power plants and bridges on Tuesday if the Strait of Hormuz is not reopened, escalating tensions after more than a month of conflict involving U.S. and Israeli operations against Iran.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump warned Tehran to restore access to the strategic shipping lane, which Iran has effectively closed since hostilities intensified. “Tuesday will be Power Plant Day, and Bridge Day, all wrapped up in one, in Iran. There will be nothing like it!!!” he wrote, linking potential military action directly to the disruption of maritime traffic through the strait.

The president’s remarks, delivered in forceful language, underscored the growing pressure on Iran amid ongoing military exchanges. The Strait of Hormuz is a critical artery for global energy supplies, and its closure has heightened concerns over disruptions to oil shipments and broader economic repercussions.

Trump also said he would hold a news conference on Monday in the Oval Office following a U.S. military operation that rescued two American pilots whose aircraft had been downed in Iran. Details of the rescue mission were not elaborated in the statement.

The threat of strikes on infrastructure marks a potential widening of targets beyond military assets, signaling an escalation in U.S. strategy as tensions persist in the region. Iran has not publicly responded to Trump’s latest warning.

The developments come amid continued fighting involving U.S. and Israeli forces and Iranian targets, with both sides reporting damage to infrastructure and military assets over the past month.

Washington — Hopes for a quick resolution to the Iran war dimmed after Donald Trump signaled intensified military action without outlining a clear path to de-escalation, sending oil prices sharply higher and global stocks lower.

In a prime-time address, Trump said the United States would “hit” Iran hard over the next two to three weeks while asserting that core military objectives were nearing completion.

However, the absence of a defined endgame unsettled investors and raised concerns about prolonged disruption to global energy supplies.

South AfricaBenchmark crude prices jumped around 5%, climbing above $106 per barrel, while equity markets declined across major regions as traders reacted to continued uncertainty over the conflict and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil shipments.

Trump reiterated that U.S. forces were “on track” to complete their objectives “very shortly,” and said Iran had been “essentially decimated,” while warning that further escalation remained possible if Tehran did not meet U.S. demands.

He also suggested potential strikes on key infrastructure, including energy facilities. Despite the aggressive rhetoric, diplomatic prospects remain limited. A senior Iranian source told Reuters that Tehran is seeking a guaranteed ceasefire before halting attacks and confirmed that no indirect talks on a temporary truce have taken place.

The ongoing conflict, which began after U.S.-Israeli strikes on Feb. 28, has disrupted global oil flows and heightened geopolitical risk across the Middle East. Iran’s effective blockade of Hormuz has constrained shipments that typically account for about one-fifth of global oil and gas trade, amplifying volatility in energy markets.

Market participants said Trump’s speech failed to reassure investors seeking clarity on how and when the conflict might end, with uncertainty over supply disruptions and military escalation continuing to drive price swings.

International financial institutions, including the International Monetary Fund, World Bank and International Energy Agency, have warned that the war is having significant and uneven global economic impacts, particularly on energy-importing countries.

Paris— Iranian authorities have deployed armed teenagers on patrol across Tehran as part of an expanded security crackdown during the ongoing war, with officials confirming that minors as young as 12 are being recruited into the Basij paramilitary force.

Checkpoints staffed by security personnel and volunteers have proliferated across the capital since the conflict began, initially marked by military vehicles and road barriers. While some visible fortifications have been scaled back following recent airstrikes, residents say patrols remain widespread, with teenagers now playing an increasingly prominent role.

Witness accounts describe adolescents aged 13 to 14 manning checkpoints, stopping vehicles and conducting searches. A 28-year-old resident told AFP that she was stopped at two checkpoints in northern Tehran, where teenage boys carrying weapons inspected her phone and personal belongings without consent, calling the encounter intrusive.

Another resident said that beyond formal military checkpoints, groups of youths in private vehicles were independently stopping cars, opening doors and checking dashboards and mobile devices.Authorities have acknowledged lowering the minimum age for Basij recruitment to 12, citing high levels of interest among younger volunteers.

Rahim Nadali, an official with the Revolutionary Guards in Tehran, said on state television that the decision reflected demand from children seeking to participate in defense efforts. The Basij, an auxiliary force under the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, has historically played a central role in internal security operations.

It was also reported to have been involved in suppressing anti-government protests in January, during which thousands were killed. The expanded use of minors has drawn concern from rights groups and analysts. Some observers interpret the move as an indication of manpower shortages, while others see it as a sign of a more hardline approach by authorities seeking to consolidate control amid external and internal pressures.

Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Iran’s parliamentary speaker, urged supporters to maintain a presence on the streets, framing domestic mobilization as part of a broader strategic effort alongside military and maritime pressures, including tensions around the Strait of Hormuz.

Analysts say the intensified street presence is aimed at deterring potential unrest, particularly after calls from U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu encouraging opposition activity at the outset of the war.

In addition to checkpoint duties, pro-government groups have organized nighttime patrols, using vehicles equipped with loudspeakers to broadcast slogans and display flags in residential areas.

Hamidreza Azizi, a visiting fellow at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs, said the government was increasingly reliant on a core base of ideologically committed supporters to maintain order. He noted that this strategy reflects deeper challenges to the state’s legitimacy but has proven effective in sustaining control during wartime conditions.

Human Rights Watch said the recruitment of children under 15 for military roles could constitute a war crime under international law and warned that their deployment exposes them to heightened risks, including potential targeting in military strikes.

Bill Van Esveld, the group’s associate director for children’s rights, said the policy suggested authorities were willing to endanger minors to bolster security capacity.

Jerusalem — Israel’s military said on Monday it had struck a university in Tehran affiliated with Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, describing the site as a key hub for advanced weapons research and military development.

In a statement, the Israeli military said the target was located within the compound of Imam Hossein University, which it identified as the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ primary military academic institution and an emergency support asset for Iran’s armed forces.

The Israeli military said it carried out multiple strikes on infrastructure within the university complex in recent days, aiming to degrade Iran’s weapons production and development capabilities.

According to the statement, the strikes destroyed underground wind tunnels, a chemistry centre, and a technology and engineering facility linked to a mechanics and development group, all of which Israel said were used in weapons research.

Israel described the university as a central component of the IRGC’s military infrastructure. The institution has previously been visited by senior Iranian officials, including former supreme leader Ali Khamenei.

There was no immediate confirmation or response from Iranian authorities regarding the reported strike or the extent of damage.
