Beirut— An Israeli drone strike in eastern Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley killed one person and wounded two others on Wednesday, Lebanese

Beirut— An Israeli drone strike in eastern Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley killed one person and wounded two others on Wednesday, Lebanese state media reported, underscoring continued tensions despite an ongoing truce between Israel and Hezbollah.

Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency said the attack occurred at dawn on the outskirts of Al-Jabur in the West Bekaa region. There was no immediate confirmation from the Israeli military, which said it was not aware of the reported strike.

The incident comes amid a fragile ceasefire between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah that began last week following an escalation of cross-border hostilities.Hezbollah said on Tuesday it had launched rockets and attack drones toward northern Israel, describing the action as a response to what it called repeated Israeli violations of the truce, including strikes on civilian areas and infrastructure.

The Israeli military said Hezbollah had fired multiple rockets at its forces in southern Lebanon and that it had targeted the launcher in retaliation.

Lebanese media also reported continued Israeli artillery shelling and demolition operations in southern areas where Israeli forces remain deployed.

Israel intensified its military campaign in Lebanon after Hezbollah entered the broader regional conflict in support of Iran in early March.

Despite the ceasefire, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz has said Israeli forces would respond with “full force” to any perceived threats.Under the terms of the truce, Israel maintains that it reserves the right to act against attacks it deems imminent or ongoing.

Jerusalem— Itamar Ben-Gvir visited the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound on Sunday, calling for expanded access for Jewish worshippers and prompting condemnation

Jerusalem— Itamar Ben-Gvir visited the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound on Sunday, calling for expanded access for Jewish worshippers and prompting condemnation from Jordan, which said the move violated longstanding arrangements governing the sensitive site.

Ben-Gvir, a far-right member of Israel’s government, said during the visit that he was pushing for increased Jewish prayer rights at the compound, known to Jews as the Temple Mount and revered by Muslims as Islam’s third-holiest site.

“Today, I feel like the owner here,” he said in a video released by his office, adding that more changes were needed and urging Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to take further steps.

The compound, located in Jerusalem’s Old City, is administered by a Jordanian religious authority under a decades-old status quo arrangement that permits Jewish visits but prohibits prayer at the site.

Jordan’s foreign ministry said Ben-Gvir’s visit constituted “a desecration of its sanctity, a condemnable escalation and an unacceptable provocation,” warning that it breached the established status quo.

Ben-Gvir’s spokesman said the minister had sought broader access and prayer permits for Jewish visitors and confirmed that he had prayed during the visit. There was no immediate response from Netanyahu’s office.

In previous instances, similar visits by Ben-Gvir have been followed by statements from Israeli authorities reaffirming that there is no change to the status quo.

The compound has long been a focal point of tensions in the region, with past disputes over access and prayer rights triggering unrest.

Religious sites in Jerusalem, including Al-Aqsa, had been largely closed to the public during the ongoing regional conflict.

No immediate signs of unrest were reported following Sunday’s visit.

Latakia — The Christian Church in Syria’s Latakia has dismissed circulating rumors of instability, affirming that recent discussions with the interim government’s General Security Service (GSS) provided reassurance about the situation on the ground.

In a strongly worded statement, the Church urged the public, “Do not get carried away with rumors”, emphasizing that concerns over safety and governance in the region have been exaggerated.

The Church’s response comes amid rising speculation about the security of religious minorities in the coastal city, where reports had suggested a growing atmosphere of uncertainty. However, officials from the Church assured that their engagement with the GSS reaffirmed the stability of the community.

The statement was shared by Charles Lister of the Washington-based Middle East Institute’s Syria Program and founder of SyriaWeekly.com, further amplifying its reach among analysts and observers tracking developments in Syria.

NEW — the Christian Church in #Latakia rebuffs rumors of instability, saying a meeting with the interim gov't GSS "reassured."

"Do not get carried away with rumors," it warns. pic.twitter.com/QkwKisFKew
— Charles Lister (@Charles_Lister) March 9, 2025

While tensions in parts of Syria continue, Latakia has largely remained under firm government control, and the Church’s remarks seek to counter concerns that recent events might pose a direct threat to the Christian community in the city.

Local sources indicate that religious institutions remain operational and that no extraordinary security measures have been imposed, reinforcing the Church’s message of calm.

While misinformation continues to spread in conflict zones, the Church’s statement serves as a call for discernment, urging both residents and the international community to rely on verified sources rather than unconfirmed speculation.
