Washington – Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman continued his visit to the United States with scheduled meetings on Capitol

Washington – Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman continued his visit to the United States with scheduled meetings on Capitol Hill, where lawmakers are preparing for discussions that reflect a more measured and less confrontational political climate compared to previous years.

The visit aims to highlight the growing economic, defence, and strategic cooperation between Washington and Riyadh, marking a shift from past tensions rooted in human rights debates and regional conflicts.

President Donald Trump hosted the crown prince at the White House a day earlier, offering a warm reception that underscored longstanding U.S.–Saudi ties and the administration’s focus on strengthening bilateral engagement.

During the meeting, Trump reaffirmed the importance of security cooperation, energy collaboration, and regional stability, framing the relationship as essential for both countries amid shifting global dynamics.

The visit comes at a time when the Saudi leader is working to present his country as a major global investor, a partner in regional security, and an influential player in shaping new economic pathways across the Middle East and beyond.

This approach has gradually softened political attitudes in Washington, where previous years were marked by sharper criticism of Riyadh’s policies and actions.

Several lawmakers who were once outspoken critics appear more reserved now, reflecting larger geopolitical considerations, evolving alliances, and a desire for stable cooperation in areas such as defence, trade, and counterterrorism.

Even so, the crown prince’s meetings on Capitol Hill are expected to be quieter and more controlled, with limited public appearances and no formal press engagements planned by congressional leadership.

During his time in Washington, the crown prince is also engaging in high-level conversations with officials, strategists, and business leaders at an investment-focused conference that highlights Saudi Arabia’s diversification projects.

The initiative is tied to efforts under Saudi Vision 2030, a transformation plan aimed at modernizing the economy and expanding global partnerships, including with U.S. companies.

Despite the warmer tone, pockets of criticism remain among some lawmakers who continue to scrutinize issues related to human rights, governance concerns, and regional conflict dynamics.

These views, while less dominant than before, still influence parts of the political landscape, especially among members who have followed developments closely over the last decade.

The atmosphere stands in stark contrast to reactions from several years ago, when members of Congress frequently challenged Riyadh’s actions and called for accountability across different areas of concern.

At that time, the political conversation was intensified by debate over Saudi Arabia’s involvement in Yemen and broader discussions on civilian protection, military support, and humanitarian outcomes.

Recent shifts, however, have placed greater emphasis on shared strategic interests, with many policymakers acknowledging the role the Kingdom plays in energy markets, maritime security, and regional diplomatic efforts.

This changing focus has contributed to a more pragmatic approach in Washington, where policymakers weigh both the benefits and complexities of the partnership.

Still, some lawmakers voiced disappointment over the public reception given to the crown prince, arguing that the United States should balance strategic alignment with firm advocacy for American values.

They maintain that long-term partnerships depend not only on shared interests but also on transparency, rule of law, and commitment to peaceful political development.

The crown prince’s current visit is expected to set the tone for future dialogue between the two countries as evolving global pressures push Washington and Riyadh to reassess their coordination.

Both sides appear intent on reinforcing their strategic framework while acknowledging areas where perspectives differ and conversation remains necessary.

As meetings progress, analysts note that the United States and Saudi Arabia are navigating a complex moment in global politics, with energy markets shifting, regional conflicts evolving, and major powers recalibrating their roles.

The crown prince’s engagements in Washington indicate a desire to align long-term planning with new political realities, signaling the continued importance of the partnership despite past disagreements.

The visit ultimately highlights a broader trend in which countries with deep historical ties are working through periods of tension to maintain cooperation in an increasingly unpredictable global environment.

For the United States and Saudi Arabia, the coming months may define how closely their strategic priorities align and how both sides manage the balance of interests, expectations, and reforms.

He rose to become president of King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah, where his leadership was marked by a vision to strengthen research and expand opportunities for Saudi students in science and higher education.

His scholarly and humanitarian journey took him well beyond academia. Dr. Naseef served as Deputy Chairman of the Saudi Shoura Council, where he was highly respected for his balanced views and unwavering commitment to national progress.

He also led the Muslim World League (MWL) as its Secretary-General, representing Saudi Arabia in global forums from 1983 to 1993, promoting Islamic unity, and advocating for constructive dialogue among civilizations.

An International Ambassador of Peace and Education

His leadership helped strengthen the Muslim World League’s role as a bridge for global cooperation, emphasizing Islam’s universal values of compassion, justice, and knowledge.

He also co-founded and led several international educational and cultural institutions, including Dar Al-Islam in New Mexico, the Islamic College in Chicago, and the Islamic Academy in Cambridge.

He served as vice president of the International Islamic University in Islamabad and chaired the boards of prominent institutions such as the Islamic Cultural Centers in Geneva and Sydney, and the Institute for the History of Arabic and Islamic Sciences at the University of Frankfurt.

Dr. Naseef was also deeply engaged in humanitarian causes through his work with the International Islamic Relief Organization, World Muslim Congress, and International Islamic Council for Dawah and Relief.

His decades of service earned him numerous accolades, the most notable being the King Faisal Prize for Service to Islam in 1991, recognizing his outstanding leadership and contributions to Islamic education and international cooperation.

A Legacy of Leadership and Dialogue

Tributes poured in from across the globe following his passing. Faisal bin Muammar, founding secretary-general of the King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz International Center for Interreligious and Intercultural Dialogue, wrote on X (formerly Twitter):

“My deepest condolences and sympathy on the passing of Abdullah Omar Naseef, who departed this life after a distinguished journey filled with scholarly and humanitarian contributions. He was always a symbol of balance and wisdom — a man whose social and humanitarian legacy will be fondly remembered.”

Dr. Naseef also played a vital role in youth and community development, serving on the World Scout Committee and leading the International Union of Muslim Scouts. He viewed youth engagement as a cornerstone of building a responsible, ethical future generation.

Riyadh — India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences on the passing of Saudi Arabia’s Grand Mufti, Sheikh Abdulaziz

Riyadh — India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences on the passing of Saudi Arabia’s Grand Mufti, Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Al-Sheikh, in a message that has drawn wide international attention.

“Deepest condolences on the sad demise of the Grand Mufti of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, His Eminence Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Abdullah bin Mohammed Al AlSheikh. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Kingdom and its people in this moment of grief,” Modi wrote on his official account on X (formerly Twitter).

The message resonated strongly on social media, amassing more than 2.8 million views and over 33,000 likes within hours of publication, reflecting the significance of the Grand Mufti’s role in the Muslim world and the importance of Indo-Saudi relations.

Deepest condolences on the sad demise of the Grand Mufti of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, His Eminence Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Abdullah bin Mohammed Al AlSheikh. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Kingdom and its people in this moment of grief.
— Narendra Modi (@narendramodi) September 24, 2025

Sheikh Abdulaziz Al-Sheikh, who passed away at the age of 84, was born in 1940 in Mecca. He hailed from the prestigious Al-Sheikh family, descendants of the 18th-century religious scholar Mohammed bin Abdulwahhab, the founder of the revivalist movement in Arabia.

Mohammed bin Abdulwahhab’s alliance with Imam Mohammed bin Saud laid the foundations of the first Saudi state, shaping the religious and political identity of the Kingdom. As a great-grandson of this lineage, Sheikh Abdulaziz Al-Sheikh embodied both religious authority and historical continuity.

His Scholarly Journey

Blind from childhood, Sheikh Abdulaziz Al-Sheikh memorized the Qur’an at an early age and immersed himself in Islamic sciences. He studied under several of the Kingdom’s most respected scholars, including Sheikh Mohammed bin Ibrahim Al-Sheikh, who was the first Grand Mufti of modern Saudi Arabia.

Over the decades, Sheikh Abdulaziz himself became a towering figure in Islamic scholarship, guiding thousands of students in Qur’anic exegesis, jurisprudence, and Islamic theology. Among his most prominent students are current members of the Saudi Council of Senior Scholars, who continue to carry forward his intellectual and religious influence.

Sheikh Abdulaziz was appointed as the Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia in 1999, succeeding the late Sheikh Abdulaziz ibn Baz. In this capacity, he presided over the Council of Senior Scholars and the Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Ifta, the Kingdom’s highest religious bodies.

As Grand Mufti, he oversaw religious edicts on issues ranging from family law and worship to questions of modern technology and finance. His guidance was sought not only in Saudi Arabia but also across the broader Muslim world, where his influence shaped theological discussions and religious rulings.

India–Saudi Religious Diplomacy

Prime Minister Modi’s message also reflects New Delhi’s wider engagement with Saudi Arabia beyond energy and trade. In recent years, Modi has made efforts to build bridges between Indian Muslim communities and the religious establishment in Riyadh.

During his state visits to the Kingdom, Modi held meetings that sought to foster dialogue between Indian ulema (scholars) and their Saudi counterparts. These efforts were aimed at encouraging cultural and spiritual understanding, and at reinforcing the shared values between the world’s largest democracy and the custodian of Islam’s two holiest mosques.

Analysts note that Modi’s public expression of grief for the Grand Mufti underscores his awareness of Saudi Arabia’s deep religious influence, particularly among South Asia’s vast Muslim population.

A Loss for the Muslim World

Tributes have poured in from across the Islamic world, with leaders and scholars highlighting his contributions to Islamic jurisprudence, his steadfast defense of religious teachings, and his decades-long service to the Kingdom.

For India, Modi’s widely noted message signals the importance of maintaining strong cultural and religious ties with Saudi Arabia, at a time when the two countries are strengthening their strategic, economic, and people-to-people relations.
