British Finance Minister Rishi Sunak sent a proposal letter to Royal Mint Advisory Committee (RMAC) to recognize the individuals from other communities. “RMAC is currently considering a coin to commemorate Gandhi”, the Treasury said.

The move is to recognize the contributions of Blacks, Asians and other ethnic minorities around the world.

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on 2nd October 1869 in India’s Gujarat state. He was a lawyer, anti-colonial nationalist who used non-violent methods to lead a successful campaign for India’s independence from British rule which was accomplished on 15th August 1947.

He was assassinated on 30th January 1948 by a Hindu nationalist Nathuram Godse who fired three bullets into his chest from a pistol at close range.

Gandhi is regraded as India’s “father of the nation” and his legacy is commended worldwide. He is featured on every currency note in India, and he will be the first Indian on British currency if the Minister Sunak’s proposal comes into action.
