Kyiv – A major railway hub near Kyiv experienced damage following an overnight wave of drone and missile strikes, prompting Ukrainian authorities to mobilize rapid repair efforts to stabilize rail operations.

Despite the intensity of the attack, officials reported no casualties, and emergency teams quickly initiated restoration work to maintain essential connectivity.

The strikes targeted the town of Fastiv, an important transport link that supports movement across several regions.

Railway authorities confirmed damage to depot facilities and rail carriages, but emphasized that safety procedures were activated immediately to protect workers and passengers.

Ukrainian officials noted that the country’s infrastructure has faced heightened pressure in recent weeks as energy sites and transport networks continue to be tested.

However, the resilience of emergency services and the readiness of technical teams have helped minimize long-term disruptions.

Transport operators temporarily canceled several suburban trains near Kyiv and Chernihiv due to safety concerns.

These adjustments, they said, were necessary to evaluate risks and ensure secure operations before resuming full service.

Emergency crews reported a fire and structural losses at the railway depot, but swift intervention helped contain the situation.

Additional assessments remain underway across affected regions to determine the extent of the damage and prioritize repairs.

Authorities stated that drone and missile activity also targeted infrastructure in the Chernihiv region, prompting further mobilization of response units.

Teams are coordinating with local administrations to ensure that essential services such as heat, electricity and water supply are gradually restored.

Ukraine’s energy and community development ministries confirmed that energy facilities across several regions were struck overnight.

Some areas, including Odesa, experienced temporary disruptions to heating and water systems as crews worked to reroute resources and activate backup power solutions.

Despite the scale of the attack, nationwide energy operators emphasized that repair operations began immediately where safety conditions allowed.

Their focus remains on restoring power, stabilizing grids and protecting essential infrastructure from further impact.

Officials in Odesa reported that parts of the port’s operating systems temporarily switched to generator power.’

Technicians continued to assess the affected areas while maintaining critical maritime and logistical functions.

Meanwhile, air alert sirens in eastern Poland briefly sounded due to regional activity, prompting local authorities to review safety protocols.

Defense officials later confirmed that no airspace violations occurred, and the situation remained under control.

The coordinated response from multiple agencies reflects the broader effort to protect civilian infrastructure and maintain continuity of essential services.

Authorities reiterated that safeguarding transportation and energy systems remains a top priority, especially during heightened regional tensions.

Despite challenging conditions, Ukrainian engineers, first responders and infrastructure specialists continue to demonstrate resilience in rapidly restoring damaged facilities.

Their work supports both regional mobility and national stability, ensuring that communities remain connected and essential supplies continue to move.

Local leaders emphasized the importance of strengthening protective measures and enhancing international cooperation to safeguard critical networks.

They expressed confidence that ongoing support and coordinated action will help maintain operational continuity even under difficult circumstances.

As assessments continue, Ukraine remains focused on repairing affected structures, restoring public services and reinforcing security measures.

The response to the overnight attack highlights a collective determination to protect vital infrastructure and ensure that disruptions remain temporary.

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has urged NATO to increase support for Slovakia’s air-defence capabilities as the country reassesses its long-term security needs.

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has called for expanded NATO assistance to reinforce Slovakia’s air-defence capabilities, emphasizing the country’s need for stronger protective measures as regional security dynamics continue to evolve.

The request was made during detailed discussions in Bratislava with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, where both sides reviewed current threats and the long-term requirements of Slovakia’s defence strategy.

Fico stated that Slovakia, positioned on NATO’s eastern flank, faces increasing pressure to modernize its defensive systems and improve surveillance capacities, particularly as the broader security environment remains uncertain.

He explained that the government is focused on ensuring that national defence planning aligns with the country’s operational needs and the expectations of its allies.

During the talks, both delegations examined ongoing defence initiatives, the pace of modernization programs, and the importance of strengthening coordination among NATO countries to address emerging air-space challenges.

Fico stressed that although many NATO states are rapidly increasing defence budgets, Slovakia must balance alliance commitments with domestic economic priorities and long-term fiscal stability.

He reaffirmed Slovakia’s intention to determine its own structure and timeline for defence spending, noting that each nation must choose an approach that best reflects its internal requirements and strategic goals.

The meeting also covered Slovakia’s position on European support for Ukraine, with the prime minister restating that Slovakia will not directly supply lethal weapons to Kyiv.

Fico clarified that while the government will allow commercial contracts for defence equipment, it will not participate in the direct transfer of weaponry as an official policy decision.

He added that this approach reflects the government’s view that each country should independently decide how it contributes to broader European security efforts without external pressure.

A statement released after the meeting confirmed that Fico requested enhanced air-defence support from NATO, seeking additional deployments or technical assistance to further secure Slovak air space.

Although the government did not disclose specific details about the type of reinforcement requested, officials emphasized that the country is working to strengthen defence infrastructure on multiple fronts.

Slovakia has already taken significant steps toward modernizing its air-defence systems, including the acquisition of advanced technology from Israel and increased collaboration with international defence partners.

The nation has also invested in updating its air fleet through the purchase of new F-16 fighter jets, which are intended to improve aerial readiness and operational capability.

In previous regional discussions, Slovakia joined other EU countries on the eastern flank in supporting the concept of a shared “drone wall” equipped with advanced detection and monitoring technologies.

This initiative aims to enhance collective border protection, improve early threat identification, and support greater coordination among neighbouring states facing similar security concerns.

Fico emphasized the value of these coordinated efforts, noting that technological advancements and cross-border cooperation are essential to maintaining stability and preparedness throughout the region.

He also highlighted that increased NATO engagement would accelerate Slovakia’s progress toward modernizing defence infrastructure and integrating new surveillance systems.

Secretary General Rutte acknowledged Slovakia’s concerns and reiterated NATO’s continued commitment to supporting member states facing heightened security pressures.

He emphasized that the alliance must remain flexible, cooperative, and proactive as the strategic environment continues to shift across Europe.

Both leaders agreed on the importance of ongoing communication, joint planning, and increased collaboration to ensure that Slovakia receives the support needed to bolster its air-defence readiness.

The meeting concluded with an understanding that further consultations will follow, focusing specifically on operational needs, technological upgrades, and opportunities for enhanced partnership.

Slovakia intends to continue expanding its defence capabilities while deepening ties with NATO and EU partners, recognizing that long-term security depends on combined regional efforts.

Government officials indicated that additional discussions and technical evaluations will be held in the coming months as Slovakia works to adapt to evolving geopolitical challenges and strengthen national defence systems.

Brussels (Reuters) – NATO warned Russia on Tuesday that it would use “all necessary military and non-military tools” to defend

Brussels (Reuters) – NATO warned Russia on Tuesday that it would use “all necessary military and non-military tools” to defend itself as it condemned Moscow for violating Estonian airspace in “a pattern of increasingly irresponsible behaviour”.

Estonia said on Friday that three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets violated its airspace for 12 minutes before being escorted out by NATO Italian fighter jets – an incident Western officials say was likely designed to test NATO’s readiness and resolve.

The week before, some 20 Russian drones entered Polish airspace, prompting NATO jets to shoot some of them down and the alliance to beef up the defence of Europe’s eastern flank.

Tuesday’s meeting of the North Atlantic Council, made up of ambassadors from the alliance’s 32 member countries, was called after Estonia invoked Article 4 of NATO’s founding treaty.

Nato Commanders can take ‘Ultimate’ Decision

“Russia bears full responsibility for these actions, which are escalatory, risk miscalculation and endanger lives. They must stop,” the council said in a statement.

“Russia should be in no doubt: NATO and Allies will employ, in accordance with international law, all necessary military and non-military tools to defend ourselves and deter all threats from all directions,” the statement said.

“We will continue to respond in the manner, timing, and domain of our choosing.”

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said the Russian jets over Estonia had not been shot down as it had been assessed that they posed no immediate threat.

But he said NATO commanders had the authority to “take the ultimate decision” if they assessed that intruding aircraft did pose such a threat.

Defensive Alliance But ‘Not Naive’

NATO’s Article 4 states that allies will “consult together whenever, in the opinion of any of them, the territorial integrity, political independence or security” of a member is threatened.

It is only the ninth time in NATO’s 76-year history that the article has been invoked – and two of those occasions have come this month in response to the incidents over Poland and Estonia.

“We are a defensive alliance, yes, but we are not naive. So we see what is happening,” Rutte said.

“If it is not intentional, then it is blatantly incompetent. And of course, even if it is incompetence, we still have to defend ourselves.”

Russia said on Monday that Estonia’s assertion that Russian jets violated Estonian airspace was unfounded and accused Tallinn of seeking to ratchet up East-West tensions.

On the Polish incident, Russia said its drones had carried out a major attack on military facilities in western Ukraine that night but had not planned to hit targets in Poland.

In its statement, NATO also said its members would not be deterred from continuing to support Ukraine “in the exercise of its inherent right to self-defence against Russia’s brutal and unprovoked war of aggression”.
