<p>Sticker charts, long associated with children&#8217;s classrooms and household chores, are gaining popularity among adults seeking simple ways to maintain exercise routines, build healthy habits and stay accountable to personal goals.The trend has attracted growing attention as consumers increasingly look for alternatives to digital habit-tracking applications. </p>



<p>Supporters say the approach offers a visible and tangible reminder of progress, while psychologists argue that the charts tap into fundamental principles of human motivation.Lucy Mountain, whose business sells physical sticker-based habit trackers, says many customers use the charts to reinforce consistency rather than pursue perfection.</p>



<p> Social media users have credited the system with helping them maintain routines, with one customer writing that placing a gold star on a chart helped keep them accountable, while another said the chart motivated them to attend the gym on days when they otherwise might have stayed home.</p>



<p>&#8220;It’s not just about tapping into your inner child,&#8221; Mountain said. &#8220;I do just think it’s a system that works.&#8221;Researchers say the appeal may lie in the way humans respond to rewards.</p>



<p> Kou Murayama, principal investigator at the Motivation Science Lab at the University of Tübingen in Germany, said rewards have long been recognized as drivers of behaviour in both humans and animals.While adults may not value a sticker in the same way a child does, Murayama said the act of achieving a goal can itself function as a reward. </p>



<p>The visual confirmation of progress provides a sense of accomplishment that reinforces continued effort.The approach may be particularly useful for activities that lack a clear endpoint. Thomas Webb, a professor of psychology at the University of Sheffield whose research focuses on self-regulation, said many long-term health goals involve repeated actions that are never fully completed.</p>



<p>&#8220;The problem with long-term goals such as eating fruit and vegetables regularly is that the goal is never complete,&#8221; Webb said.A sticker chart creates a daily finish line, allowing users to record a completed action and experience a sense of closure before beginning again the next day.</p>



<p>The concept aligns with established research in motivational psychology. Murayama pointed to goal-setting theory, developed by psychologists Edwin Locke and Gary Latham, which suggests that goals tend to be more motivating when they are specific, relatively near-term and sufficiently challenging.</p>



<p>Sticker charts, he said, satisfy at least the first two of those conditions by clearly defining a target and breaking progress into manageable increments.The effectiveness of such systems, however, may diminish over time. Some users report that the charts initially increase productivity but gradually lose their influence as the novelty fades.</p>



<p>One challenge is what psychologists refer to as the &#8220;what the hell effect,&#8221; a phenomenon in which individuals abandon a goal after a setback because they perceive themselves as having already failed. Missing one day can lead to disengagement from the broader objective.</p>



<p>Mountain said some users address this problem by incorporating alternative markers, such as silver stars, on days when a task is intentionally skipped. The goal, she said, is to maintain momentum and reinforce consistency rather than create pressure for perfect adherence.Psychologists caution that rewards can become counterproductive if they are relied upon indefinitely.</p>



<p> Murayama said sticker charts may initially support a person&#8217;s sense of autonomy because users choose to track their own behaviour. Over time, however, some individuals may begin to feel constrained by the system itself.According to Murayama, people generally prefer to feel in control of their actions. If a tracking mechanism starts to feel like an external source of pressure rather than a personal choice, motivation can decline.</p>



<p>Nikos Ntoumanis, a professor of motivation science at the University of Southern Denmark, expressed a similar view. He described rewards as a &#8220;double-edged sword&#8221; and argued that external incentives should ideally be reduced over time.If rewards become the primary reason for performing an activity, he said, motivation often returns to previous levels once those rewards disappear.</p>



<p>Despite such concerns, interest in adult sticker charts continues to grow. Google searches for the term reached a five-year high in February, according to search trend data cited in the source material. Mountain said demand for her products has increased to the point that her business recently expanded into warehouse space.</p>



<p>The rise of physical habit trackers comes at a time when many consumers report fatigue with constant digital engagement. Although numerous free habit-tracking applications are available, advocates of paper-based systems argue that physical visibility provides an advantage.</p>



<p>Mountain said she originally developed the idea after tracking workouts using a gold star emoji on her phone. Over time, however, she became convinced that a physical reminder offered greater value.Her charts are designed to be displayed prominently, often on a refrigerator, where they remain visible throughout the day without requiring notifications or screen time.</p>



<p>For users such as customer Gray, the appeal extends beyond productivity. She said adults often feel pressure to behave in ways considered mature or serious, while simple tools associated with childhood can still provide practical benefits.Researchers emphasize that no single method guarantees lasting motivation. </p>



<p>Murayama said external rewards may help establish behaviours, but long-term commitment is more likely when people develop an intrinsic interest in the activity itself.Someone who begins exercising to lose weight, for example, may eventually discover enjoyment in the activity independent of any tracking system, he said.</p>

Both applications are designed to help users create barriers between themselves and frequently used apps, while providing incentives to maintain healthier digital habits.</p>



<p>Developers of such tools argue that technology itself can be used to counteract problematic usage patterns. By rewarding periods of abstinence and making access to distracting applications less immediate, they aim to reshape behaviour over time.</p>



<p>A separate category of products seeks to move beyond software restrictions by introducing a physical element into the process. One example is Brick, a small plastic tile that acts as a gateway to selected smartphone applications.</p>



<p>The device attaches magnetically to metal surfaces such as refrigerators, doors or other household fixtures. <p>India’s informal workforce is increasingly struggling to cope with intensifying heat as rising daytime temperatures and warmer nights reduce opportunities for physical recovery, according to workers, researchers and a new regional study examining the impact of extreme heat across major Asian cities.</p>



<p>In Delhi, where temperatures have climbed above 45 degrees Celsius during recent heatwaves, delivery rider Jalaj Jha begins his workday already fatigued. The 24-year-old gig worker, who delivers groceries on a motorbike, said sleep has become increasingly difficult in the summer months because of the heat trapped inside his small rented room.</p>



<p>Jha, who lives in accommodation with limited ventilation and relies on a fan that circulates warm air, said he often sleeps only three to four hours a night. By the time he starts preparing for work in the morning, he already feels physically exhausted. His daily shift lasts about 12 hours, exposing him to prolonged outdoor temperatures that continue to rise through the day.</p>



<p>Delhi this week recorded its hottest day in May in two years and its warmest May night in 14 years, underscoring a broader trend identified by climate researchers across South Asia. Scientists have warned that night-time temperatures in many parts of the region are increasing faster than daytime temperatures, reducing the hours traditionally available for cooling and recovery after extreme heat exposure.</p>



<p>A report released by the United States-based organization People’s Courage International (PCI) found that rising overnight temperatures, combined with the urban heat island effect, are creating worsening conditions for millions of informal workers across South and South-East Asia. The urban heat island effect refers to the tendency of densely built urban areas to retain heat absorbed during the day, keeping temperatures elevated after sunset.</p>



<p>The study examined conditions in Delhi, Dhaka, Kathmandu, Jakarta and Quezon City. Researchers concluded that many workers are beginning their workdays in a state of accumulated fatigue because they are unable to cool down adequately during the night.</p>



<p>The report focused on workers employed in sectors that require prolonged exposure to outdoor conditions, including delivery services, construction and street vending. Many of these workers live in densely populated settlements where access to ventilation, cooling equipment and reliable electricity remains limited.Researchers said the inability to recover physically during the night is contributing to a range of health and economic pressures. Workers interviewed for the study described increasing difficulty maintaining productivity, higher spending on coping measures and greater vulnerability to heat-related illness.</p>



<p>According to PCI, nearly eight in ten of the more than 2,200 internal migrant workers surveyed across the five cities reported that extreme heat was affecting their livelihoods or household conditions. Respondents said they were losing income because they could not complete full work shifts during periods of extreme heat. </p>



<p>Many also reported spending additional money on drinking water, transportation, medicines and other heat-related necessities.The study documented widespread reports of headaches, dizziness, fatigue and reduced work capacity during prolonged exposure to high temperatures. Researchers said these effects often develop gradually rather than through dramatic medical emergencies, making the broader impact of heat difficult to recognize despite its cumulative consequences.</p>



<p>“Heat impacts are silent and generally creep up on workers,” PCI researcher Ameena Kidwai said. She noted that workers described heat-related disruptions not only during working hours but also during commuting, at home and in their broader social lives. The effects, she said, extended to mental wellbeing and community interactions.</p>



<p>The findings come as climate scientists warn that global warming is increasing the likelihood and severity of heatwaves across South Asia. Researchers have projected that climate change could significantly increase the probability of prolonged pre-monsoon heatwaves in the region. Last month, a 15-day heatwave affected large areas of South Asia and was linked to fatalities.</p>



<p>The International Labour Organization estimates that more than 70 percent of workers across Asia are exposed to excessive heat during at least part of their employment. The risks are particularly significant in countries such as India, where nearly 90 percent of workers are employed in the informal economy and often lack workplace protections available in formal sectors.</p>



<p>Ajay Kumar, a 32-year-old vegetable vendor working in Gurugram near Delhi, said extreme heat has become a daily challenge. Kumar purchases produce from a wholesale market approximately seven kilometers from where he sells vegetables and transports the goods using a three-wheeled rickshaw through heavy traffic.</p>



<p>He said the heat frequently causes dizziness while he works, but economic pressures leave little room to reduce his hours. Kumar supports a family of six and migrated from Bihar four years ago in search of employment opportunities.Living conditions further compound the challenge. Kumar, his wife and four children occupy a single room with minimal ventilation and only a basic fan for cooling. </p>



<p>He said he had hoped to purchase an air cooler before summer but could not afford the expense.According to Kumar, his daily earnings generally range between 300 and 400 rupees, with most of the income devoted to household necessities. To manage the heat, he carries water and keeps a damp scarf around his head while working.Even after returning home, relief is limited. </p>



<p>During particularly hot nights, Kumar and his family sleep on the open terrace of their building because indoor temperatures remain too high for comfort. Despite moving outdoors, he said it can still take several hours before he is able to fall asleep.Governments across the region have introduced measures aimed at reducing heat-related risks. Delhi authorities have implemented heat action plans that include public advisories, early warning systems, water distribution points and recommendations encouraging the rescheduling of outdoor work during the hottest parts of the day.</p>



<p>Researchers, however, said many existing responses remain focused on immediate heat emergencies rather than the broader issue of recovery and living conditions. They argued that policies addressing housing quality, ventilation, access to cooling and worker protections will become increasingly important as temperatures continue to rise.</p>



<p>The PCI report found that for many workers, the most significant impact of extreme heat is not limited to the hours spent outdoors. Instead, it is the growing inability to recover between shifts, creating what researchers described as a “recovery deficit” that leaves workers physically depleted before each new workday begins.</p>

<p>Experts say recipients are often inclined to interpret messages negatively, particularly when they are under stress or experiencing emotional strain. According to workplace researchers cited in the analysis, people dealing with anxiety or stress are more likely to perceive ambiguous messages as hostile or dismissive. Additional factors such as fatigue and alcohol consumption can further impair judgment and self-control, increasing the likelihood that individuals send messages that appear sharper or more confrontational than intended.</p>



<p>The structure of email communication itself also plays a significant role. Haun, a workplace communication expert referenced in the report, argues that email creates a degree of psychological distance between sender and recipient. Without direct personal interaction, individuals can lose sight of the emotional impact their words may have on colleagues.</p>



<p>This dynamic resembles behavior observed in other settings where people interact indirectly. Organizational psychologist Amy Diehl Robinson compared email exchanges to interactions between drivers on a road, suggesting that individuals often behave more abruptly when separated from others than they would during face-to-face encounters in everyday environments such as stores or workplaces.</p>



<p>A central challenge stems from the absence of nonverbal communication cues. Unlike in-person conversations, emails do not convey facial expressions, body language, vocal tone, or other signals that help people interpret intent. As a result, messages that are intended to be neutral can easily be perceived as rude.</p>



<p>Communication researcher Yuan noted that formatting choices frequently contribute to these misunderstandings.
