Washington — A Minnesota man pleaded guilty on Thursday to assaulting Democratic U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar during a January town

Washington — A Minnesota man pleaded guilty on Thursday to assaulting Democratic U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar during a January town hall meeting in Minneapolis, admitting he targeted the congresswoman because he opposed her political views, the U.S. Justice Department said.

Anthony James Kazmierczak, 55, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court to one count of assaulting a United States officer in connection with the Jan. 27 incident, in which prosecutors said he sprayed Omar with apple cider vinegar from a syringe during a public event focused on immigration enforcement policies.

The Justice Department said Kazmierczak acknowledged during a hearing before U.S. District Judge Joan Ericksen that he had planned the assault in advance and acted because he disagreed with Omar’s positions on immigration and federal enforcement actions.

The attack occurred as Omar criticized the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency’s operations in Minnesota and discussed fatal shootings involving federal agents in Minneapolis. Authorities said the liquid sprayed on Omar’s clothing and skin was later confirmed through laboratory analysis to contain acetic acid.

Omar was not injured.Security personnel subdued Kazmierczak after he shouted and gestured toward Omar during the event, according to officials. He was later arrested, while the town hall resumed after a temporary disruption.Omar, a Somali-born Muslim lawmaker who arrived in the United States as a refugee child and became a U.S. citizen in 2000, has frequently been the target of political attacks and threats linked to her outspoken criticism of Republican immigration policies and U.S. foreign policy.

President Donald Trump has repeatedly criticized Omar publicly and on social media, including remarks questioning her place in the United States and calling for punitive action against her. Civil rights advocates and political analysts have warned that increasingly hostile rhetoric directed at elected officials has contributed to a broader rise in political intimidation and violence across the country.

The Justice Department did not immediately disclose a sentencing date. Federal assault charges involving attacks on elected officials can carry prison terms and financial penalties depending on the severity of the offense and intent established by prosecutors.

Hanoi — To Lam was unanimously elected Vietnam’s state president by the National Assembly on Tuesday, consolidating power as he retains his role as Communist Party chief and becoming the country’s most influential leader in decades.

All 495 lawmakers present endorsed his nomination, according to parliament, formalizing a dual leadership structure that departs from Vietnam’s long-standing system of collective governance.

Lam, who secured a second term earlier this year as head of the Communist Party of Vietnam, now holds both the top party and state positions for the next five years. Analysts say the concentration of authority could streamline policymaking but also raises concerns about increased centralization of power.

In a televised address after the vote, Lam pledged to pursue a new growth strategy driven by science, technology, innovation and digital transformation, while emphasizing stability, self-reliance in defense and improvements in living standards.

The leadership shift marks a structural change in Vietnam’s political system, bringing it closer to models seen in other one-party states where power is concentrated in a single figure.

Observers say this could accelerate economic decision-making in the fast-growing Southeast Asian economy.Lam, 68, previously served as minister of public security and has promoted reforms aimed at boosting competitiveness and reducing reliance on low-cost manufacturing.

His policies have drawn both praise from investors and concerns over potential risks such as market distortions, favouritism and asset bubbles.Vietnam’s foreign policy is expected to remain broadly unchanged, with Lam continuing a balancing approach between major powers while expanding global partnerships.

The National Assembly is expected to appoint a new prime minister later on Tuesday to replace Pham Minh Chinh.

World leaders, including former U.S. President Donald Trump, perceive Erdoğan’s crumbling strongman image Nearly two million Turks have gathered in

World leaders, including former U.S. President Donald Trump, perceive Erdoğan’s crumbling strongman image

Nearly two million Turks have gathered in Istanbul to protest President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s decision to arrest his main political rival, Ekrem İmamoğlu, on what critics call fabricated corruption and terrorism charges. The move has ignited widespread outrage across Turkey, with demonstrators denouncing Erdoğan’s authoritarian grip on power and calling for his immediate resignation.

The arrest of İmamoğlu, who served as Istanbul’s mayor and was seen as Erdoğan’s strongest challenger in upcoming elections, has fueled speculation that the Turkish president is attempting to eliminate political competition ahead of a crucial vote. Protesters have taken to the streets chanting, “Enough is enough!” and “Turkey will not be silenced!” as security forces struggle to contain the surging crowds.

Michael Rubin, a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute and a Middle East expert, has been vocal about the situation. “Turks are not stupid; they see through Erdoğan’s cynicism and comment on its ironies,” Rubin stated. “Erdoğan accuses İmamoğlu of corruption, but Erdoğan not only has pending corruption cases dating to his own tenure as mayor, but he has since accumulated billions of dollars in unexplained wealth. He accuses İmamoğlu of supporting terror, but Turkish journalists photographed Erdoğan’s intelligence service transporting weaponry to an Al Qaeda affiliate in Turkey.”

The controversy deepened when Erdoğan’s government reportedly annulled İmamoğlu’s university degree, a requirement for presidential candidates. Rubin pointed out the hypocrisy in this move, noting, “Not only was Erdoğan’s own degree fraudulent, but the grounds for dismissing İmamoğlu’s degree were the illegitimacy of the university he attended in occupied northern Cyprus. As with its universities, so too is it with its entire regime.”

The international community is closely watching the unfolding crisis, with speculation growing about how world leaders, including former U.S. President Donald Trump, perceive Erdoğan’s crumbling strongman image. “Trump sees himself as a winner and despises losers,” Rubin said. “Whereas he may once have seen Erdoğan as a strongman, it is now clear that the would-be sultan wears no clothes. Trump and his team are correct: Turkey is important, but Turkey and Erdoğan are not synonymous. Simply put, Trump should dump Erdoğan.”

The massive protests, among the largest in Turkey’s modern history, highlight a growing sense of urgency among citizens determined to reclaim their democracy. The Turkish military and law enforcement agencies now face a crucial test of allegiance. “Turkey’s elite soldiers swear allegiance to the state and the people of Turkey, not one man who holds the constitution and rule of law with disdain,” Rubin emphasized.

With tensions reaching a boiling point, many analysts fear that Turkey is approaching a breaking point. Some protesters argue that peaceful demonstrations may not be enough to bring about real change in a system they see as rigged in Erdoğan’s favor.

Rubin did not mince words when outlining what may be necessary for political transformation: “The Turkish protestors now fight for the soul of their nation. Every protestor on the streets of Istanbul is as consequential for the future of modern Turkey as was Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. Protests might matter in democracies; however, Turkey is not a democracy. To succeed, they must march on Turkey’s palaces and prisons. If Erdoğan does not helicopter to the airport and flee the country, they should detain him, pending trial, even if passions are such that those who reach him first might simply hang him and release political prisoners, ranging from İmamoğlu to detained Kurdish politician Selahattin Demirtaş and philanthropist Osman Kavala.”

Rubin also hinted at the possibility of internal betrayal within Erdoğan’s own ranks. “Erdoğan, like Bashar al-Assad in Syria, may be tempted to hang on. While the United States will never say directly, the White House likely would not look askance at regional states that would offer reward to any Erdoğan bodyguard who turns their guns on the would-be despot to arrest him or, if he resists, to kill him.”

The coming days will be critical for Turkey’s political future. Will the protests succeed in toppling Erdoğan’s rule, or will the regime resort to even harsher crackdowns to suppress dissent? What is clear, however, is that Turkey is at an inflection point. As Rubin put it, “The age of Erdoğan must end. Turks can either take the next step, or they will have no one but themselves to blame for Turkey’s descent into dictatorship, state failure, and eventual civil war.”

by Mustafa Thalthodi

When India got under fire after the demolition of Babri Masjid, Malappuram remained peaceful. Muslim youth were protecting temples from thoughtless mob.

Mrs. Menaka Sanjay Gandhi, well known to the Indian polity, was destined to gain limelight the day she flocked her hands with Sanjay Gandhi in her teenage. At the age eighteen she came to the Raisina Hill – the PM’s office where Smt. Indira Gandhi was holding the office.

After the death of Sanjay Gandhi in 1980, she was ousted from PM’s house due to disagreements with her mother-in-law. Soon Menaka started a society, and after the death of Smt. Indira in 1984, Rajiv Gandhi became the prime minister and Menaka stood as the opponent.

After a short while she became star among Janatha Dal leadership under V.P. Singh. But, that didn’t last long. Chandrashekhar’s Dal was her next jump, then to Dev Gauda and finally she took triple-talaq from Dal family and joined BJP.

BJP was happy to get a Gandhi and her son Varun. New asylum was next-to-best for both. In 2014-19, Menaka was cabinet minister. But in 2019, she was unlucky to draw attention of BJP’s new managers. Holing the hedge, both Gandhis have fair skill to survive in troubled waters.

In 2019’s election campaign she warned Muslim voters that if they were not casting vote in favour of BJP, Muslims should not approach her for any matter. Varun in 2009, dared to vocal furiously to a large crowd with an anti-Muslim hate speech. He said any Muslim who will harm a Hindu, should be chopped-off his hands. Both mother and son well managed to keep Sultanpur and Pilibhith seats in every election. Islamophobia is the tool for their victory.

What is new? Last week of May, a female wild elephant died after consuming an explosive-packed pineapple in Kerala. The explosive was supposedly kept for wild-pigs, which used to come to agrarian area and destroy the crops.

Kerala is a narrow strip between Arabian Sea and the Western Ghat Hills. So, there will be hardly any way to protect the farms from wild animals. This has been reality for ages. Governments, officials, forest department and every layman understand this fact.

The death of an elephant opened opportunity to Menaka, where she utter Nagpur language against a community. Thousands of Whatsapp groups and fake-Twitter handles managed by Sangh Parivar immediately spread the scoop nationwide. The message was that, Hinduism’s sacred animal killed by Muslims in a district that is the most notorious in India.

There are 14 districts in Kerala. Elephant incident happened in Palakkad district. The adjacent district is Malappuram, where Muslims are in majority. A false news sprung that the elephant died in this Muslim district. Menaka immediately tweeted and had given an interview to ANI news-agency.

Instead of discussing the elephant’s death, she accused Malappuram as the most notorious district in India. The people are heartless. They chop people’s hands for ideological differences. They produce bombs in houses. They throw poison in the roads to kill birds and dogs. Women are being treated cruelly. Everyday something mischievous happens here. They are very dangerous people and the state government is afraid to take legal actions against these people of Malappuram. She went on and on with her malicious attacks.
Sanghi social media platforms further added fuel to it.

Immediately after her intervention, millions of re-tweets spread in north India. All repeated the same. Malappuram is mini-Pakistan. This hate was not newly invented. Malappuram district was created in 1969.

When India became sovereign country in 1951, there were only 308 districts and Kerala was born in 1956, there were only five districts. Now, in India there are 739 districts of which 14 are in Kerala.

But in case of Malappuram, the BJP’s predecessor, Jana Sangh started hatred slogans against the new district in 1969. Eminent leaders came to Kerala to lead agitation campaign. Jana Sangh President Bach Raj Vyas, Treasurer Nanaji Deshmugh, Madan Lal Khurana are some of them. National newspapers like The Statesman, Free Press supported them.

Organizer weekly of RSS in 1980s published an exclusive cover story on Malappuram named ‘Mini Pakistan’. The illustration was so boisterous with pictures on accounts of Malappuram’s Islamic fundamentals. It said that the Hindu community in this district living under utter fear. They are being either forcefully converted or oppressed. Outnumbered Mosques resembles Saudi Arabia.

The Islamophobia was detailed and vivid. It remains same today. Kerala’s BJP newspaper Janmabhoomi rationalized Menaka, and even published an article saying that the creation of this Malappuram was another “partition”.

Now the district is 51-years-old. There has been not a single case of communal violence so far. It has the lowest crime rate in Kerala and in India. It is the fast growing city in the world. It is the first district that announced IT mission accomplished in India. Muslim population is 71%, while Hindu and Christian population is 27% and 2% respectively.

When India got under fire after the demolition of Babri Masjid, Malappuram remained peaceful. Muslim youth were protecting temples from thoughtless mob. There is no bomb culture in here, no lynching, no witch hunting. Once up on a time the rural areas of this district were the backward in Kerala. Now it has more roads and educational institutions than any other Kerala districts. The social fabric of Malappuram is rich. There are more than 150 old-age homes in Kerala, but none of them are listed from Malappuram.

Malappuram remains in absolute fraternity. There are famous 30 temples and 30 mosques, where people used to visit from far places. This is the most populated districts in Kerala with five million people. The suicide rate is the lowest.

Mrs. Menaka accused this is the place that the atrocities against women are most, but the reality is just opposite. This might be one of the best districts in India where women are treated fairly.

It’s highly impossible to rate criminal statistics comparing Malappuram district and Sultanpur where Mrs. Gandhi elected. For instance, Sultanpur reported 292 kidnapping cases whereas Malappuram has had only 24. Women atrocities in Sultanpur reported 22 and Malappuram has merely two. The list can go on.

It’s an open invitation from Malappuram to all those who blindly believed Mrs. Gandhi’s hate-speeches, to come and stay here for at least a week, to feel the difference of chalk and cheese.
