Saudi Arabia welcomed the agreement between Washington and Tehran to halt military operations and begin negotiations over a 60-day period aimed at reaching a permanent settlement.

Kuwait also welcomed the deal, which includes an immediate cessation of military operations and guarantees freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy route.

Kuwait praised mediation efforts by Pakistan and Qatar, along with other countries involved in facilitating the agreement, and called for disputes to be addressed through dialogue, mutual respect and non-interference.

Qatar said the agreement could help bring a lasting end to military operations and reaffirmed its support for diplomacy as the preferred method of resolving conflicts.

Egypt and Lebanon also welcomed the development, saying it could help reduce regional tensions and create momentum for broader negotiations.

Egypt described the agreement as an important step toward restoring regional and international stability and said it hoped the end of the conflict would support wider diplomatic efforts in the Middle East.

Lebanon’s Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri said the agreement could contribute to regional security and stability, while praising mediation efforts by Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Egypt.

Türkiye also described the deal as a significant development that could strengthen peace and stability across the region.

The Gulf Cooperation Council welcomed the signing of the memorandum and expressed hope that it would lead to a lasting agreement and greater regional security.

Jordan said the start of negotiations toward a permanent settlement was an important step for restoring regional and international security.

The United States and Iran announced the agreement after more than three months of conflict. US President Donald Trump said he had authorized an end to the US naval blockade of Iranian ports in the Strait of Hormuz.

Details of the agreement were not immediately released, while further negotiations, including discussions related to Iran’s nuclear program, are expected to continue.

Speaking during a meeting with a delegation from the Culture and Freedom Foundation led by former justice minister Ibrahim Najjar, Aoun dismissed calls for Lebanon to abandon the negotiations and said the government would continue pursuing talks until a settlement serving Lebanon’s national interests is achieved.

“We will not withdraw and we will continue until we reach a conclusion that benefits our nation,” Aoun said, according to remarks released by the presidency.

The Lebanese leader emphasized the role of state institutions in preserving sovereignty and stability, arguing that national authority remains the foundation for addressing the country’s security and political challenges.

Aoun’s comments come amid ongoing diplomatic efforts to stabilize the Israel-Lebanon frontier following months of conflict that have displaced large numbers of civilians and caused extensive damage in southern Lebanon.

Earlier, in a televised interview, Aoun made a rare direct appeal to Israel to pursue a negotiated settlement, arguing that military action alone could not guarantee long-term security.

He said Lebanon’s approach remains aligned with the 2002 Arab Peace Initiative, under which Arab states offered normalization of relations with Israel in exchange for the establishment of a Palestinian state and Israel’s withdrawal from occupied territories.

Aoun stressed, however, that progress toward broader normalization would require a gradual process and confidence-building measures rather than immediate political breakthroughs.

Lebanon and Israel agreed last week to a new ceasefire arrangement backed by the United States, but tensions have persisted amid reports of continued violence and disagreements over implementation.

The conflict escalated on March 2 when Hezbollah launched attacks against Israel in support of Iran. Israel responded with an extensive air campaign and ground operations that resulted in the occupation of areas in southern Lebanon.

According to figures cited by Lebanese officials, more than 3,600 people have been killed in Israeli military operations in Lebanon, while over one million residents have been displaced by the fighting.

Aoun’s remarks underscore Lebanon’s effort to balance diplomatic engagement with demands for concrete security and territorial guarantees, as international mediators seek to prevent a broader regional escalation.

Officials in Russia’s Belgorod region said a Ukrainian drone struck a vehicle in the town of Graivoron, killing one civilian. The attack was among the latest incidents affecting Russian territories bordering Ukraine, which have increasingly come under drone and artillery fire during the war.

In the neighboring Bryansk region, acting Governor Yegor Kovalchuk said a man was killed in a Ukrainian strike on the settlement of Belaya Beryozka. Local authorities did not immediately provide additional details regarding the circumstances of the attack.

Ukraine has frequently targeted military and infrastructure-related sites inside Russia, describing such operations as a response to sustained Russian bombardments of Ukrainian cities and regions since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022.

The latest fatalities came a day after intense Russian attacks across Ukraine. Ukrainian authorities reported that at least four people were killed and more than 100 injured during overnight strikes from Saturday into Sunday, with the capital Kyiv among the areas affected.

Kyiv and Moscow both reported that Russia employed its nuclear-capable Oreshnik ballistic missile during the latest wave of attacks, marking another escalation in the use of advanced weaponry in the conflict.

The Russian strikes followed a Ukrainian drone attack on educational facilities in the Russian-occupied eastern Ukrainian region of Luhansk, where authorities reported 21 deaths and more than 40 injuries.

Iran’s earlier proposal, submitted last week, called for a complete halt to military operations across the region, including Israeli operations in Lebanon, and demanded an end to a US naval blockade imposed on Iranian ports since April 13.

Tehran also insisted it would maintain control over the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy shipping route that Iran has largely restricted since the outbreak of the conflict.

Baqaei said Iran remained prepared for any renewed military escalation if diplomacy failed.

The proposal, raised by Putin over the weekend as he signaled openness to discussing postwar security arrangements in Europe, was swiftly dismissed by EU officials who questioned both Russia’s intentions and Schroeder’s neutrality because of his longstanding ties to the Kremlin and Russian state energy companies.
