Dubai-Arab and Gulf states on Monday welcomed a US-Iran agreement to end the conflict and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, expressing hope that the deal would support regional stability and encourage further diplomatic efforts.

Saudi Arabia welcomed the agreement between Washington and Tehran to halt military operations and begin negotiations over a 60-day period aimed at reaching a permanent settlement.

Kuwait also welcomed the deal, which includes an immediate cessation of military operations and guarantees freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy route.

Kuwait praised mediation efforts by Pakistan and Qatar, along with other countries involved in facilitating the agreement, and called for disputes to be addressed through dialogue, mutual respect and non-interference.

Qatar said the agreement could help bring a lasting end to military operations and reaffirmed its support for diplomacy as the preferred method of resolving conflicts.

Egypt and Lebanon also welcomed the development, saying it could help reduce regional tensions and create momentum for broader negotiations.

Egypt described the agreement as an important step toward restoring regional and international stability and said it hoped the end of the conflict would support wider diplomatic efforts in the Middle East.

Lebanon’s Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri said the agreement could contribute to regional security and stability, while praising mediation efforts by Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Egypt.

Türkiye also described the deal as a significant development that could strengthen peace and stability across the region.

The Gulf Cooperation Council welcomed the signing of the memorandum and expressed hope that it would lead to a lasting agreement and greater regional security.

Jordan said the start of negotiations toward a permanent settlement was an important step for restoring regional and international security.

The United States and Iran announced the agreement after more than three months of conflict. US President Donald Trump said he had authorized an end to the US naval blockade of Iranian ports in the Strait of Hormuz.

Details of the agreement were not immediately released, while further negotiations, including discussions related to Iran’s nuclear program, are expected to continue.

Dubai-Lebanese President Joseph Aoun reaffirmed on Thursday that Lebanon would remain engaged in U.S.-mediated negotiations aimed at ending hostilities with Israel, insisting that any lasting agreement must include an Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territory, a halt to military attacks, the deployment of Lebanese state forces, the return of displaced civilians and the release of prisoners.

Speaking during a meeting with a delegation from the Culture and Freedom Foundation led by former justice minister Ibrahim Najjar, Aoun dismissed calls for Lebanon to abandon the negotiations and said the government would continue pursuing talks until a settlement serving Lebanon’s national interests is achieved.

“We will not withdraw and we will continue until we reach a conclusion that benefits our nation,” Aoun said, according to remarks released by the presidency.

The Lebanese leader emphasized the role of state institutions in preserving sovereignty and stability, arguing that national authority remains the foundation for addressing the country’s security and political challenges.

Aoun’s comments come amid ongoing diplomatic efforts to stabilize the Israel-Lebanon frontier following months of conflict that have displaced large numbers of civilians and caused extensive damage in southern Lebanon.

Earlier, in a televised interview, Aoun made a rare direct appeal to Israel to pursue a negotiated settlement, arguing that military action alone could not guarantee long-term security.

He said Lebanon’s approach remains aligned with the 2002 Arab Peace Initiative, under which Arab states offered normalization of relations with Israel in exchange for the establishment of a Palestinian state and Israel’s withdrawal from occupied territories.

Aoun stressed, however, that progress toward broader normalization would require a gradual process and confidence-building measures rather than immediate political breakthroughs.

Lebanon and Israel agreed last week to a new ceasefire arrangement backed by the United States, but tensions have persisted amid reports of continued violence and disagreements over implementation.

The conflict escalated on March 2 when Hezbollah launched attacks against Israel in support of Iran. Israel responded with an extensive air campaign and ground operations that resulted in the occupation of areas in southern Lebanon.

According to figures cited by Lebanese officials, more than 3,600 people have been killed in Israeli military operations in Lebanon, while over one million residents have been displaced by the fighting.

Aoun’s remarks underscore Lebanon’s effort to balance diplomatic engagement with demands for concrete security and territorial guarantees, as international mediators seek to prevent a broader regional escalation.

Moscow-Two civilians were killed in separate Ukrainian strikes on Russia’s border regions of Belgorod and Bryansk on Monday, regional authorities

Moscow-Two civilians were killed in separate Ukrainian strikes on Russia’s border regions of Belgorod and Bryansk on Monday, regional authorities said, as cross-border attacks continued amid a prolonged conflict and faltering international peace efforts.

Officials in Russia’s Belgorod region said a Ukrainian drone struck a vehicle in the town of Graivoron, killing one civilian. The attack was among the latest incidents affecting Russian territories bordering Ukraine, which have increasingly come under drone and artillery fire during the war.

In the neighboring Bryansk region, acting Governor Yegor Kovalchuk said a man was killed in a Ukrainian strike on the settlement of Belaya Beryozka. Local authorities did not immediately provide additional details regarding the circumstances of the attack.

Ukraine has frequently targeted military and infrastructure-related sites inside Russia, describing such operations as a response to sustained Russian bombardments of Ukrainian cities and regions since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022.

The latest fatalities came a day after intense Russian attacks across Ukraine. Ukrainian authorities reported that at least four people were killed and more than 100 injured during overnight strikes from Saturday into Sunday, with the capital Kyiv among the areas affected.

Kyiv and Moscow both reported that Russia employed its nuclear-capable Oreshnik ballistic missile during the latest wave of attacks, marking another escalation in the use of advanced weaponry in the conflict.

The Russian strikes followed a Ukrainian drone attack on educational facilities in the Russian-occupied eastern Ukrainian region of Luhansk, where authorities reported 21 deaths and more than 40 injuries.

The conflict, now in its fifth year, remains Europe’s deadliest war since World War II. Diplomatic efforts led by the United States to broker a settlement have made little progress in recent months, with negotiations largely stalled following the outbreak of conflict in the Middle East and the resulting shift in international diplomatic priorities.

Tehran — Iran said on Monday it had formally responded to a new United States proposal aimed at ending the conflict that erupted in late February, while signaling deep reservations over Washington’s demands despite ongoing indirect exchanges through Pakistani mediation.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said Tehran had conveyed its concerns to the United States and that diplomatic contacts were continuing, although he declined to provide details of the latest exchanges.

Washington and Tehran have traded proposals since fighting began on Feb. 28, with only one direct round of talks held so far under a fragile ceasefire that has been in effect since April 8.

“As we announced yesterday, our concerns were conveyed to the American side,” Baqaei told reporters during a weekly press briefing, adding that negotiations were proceeding “through the Pakistani mediator.”

Baqaei reiterated Iran’s core demands, including the release of Iranian assets frozen overseas and the removal of longstanding US sanctions, saying Tehran’s negotiating team had consistently defended those conditions.

He also insisted that Iran’s request for war reparations remained justified, describing the conflict as “illegal and baseless.”

Iranian state-linked media reports suggested the latest US proposal sought major concessions from Tehran in exchange for limited relief measures.

According to Fars News Agency, Washington presented a five-point framework that included restricting Iran to a single operational nuclear facility and transferring its stockpile of highly enriched uranium to the United States.

The report said the United States had rejected demands to release a substantial share of Iran’s frozen assets and refused compensation for wartime damage. It also said Washington conditioned a full cessation of hostilities on Tehran entering formal peace negotiations.

Separately, Mehr News Agency criticized the US position as seeking concessions unattainable during the conflict itself, warning the demands risked deadlocking negotiations.

Iran’s earlier proposal, submitted last week, called for a complete halt to military operations across the region, including Israeli operations in Lebanon, and demanded an end to a US naval blockade imposed on Iranian ports since April 13.

Tehran also insisted it would maintain control over the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy shipping route that Iran has largely restricted since the outbreak of the conflict.

Baqaei said Iran remained prepared for any renewed military escalation if diplomacy failed.

Bruselles-European Union foreign ministers on Monday rejected a proposal by Russian President Vladimir Putin that former German chancellor Gerhard Schroeder

Bruselles-European Union foreign ministers on Monday rejected a proposal by Russian President Vladimir Putin that former German chancellor Gerhard Schroeder could represent Europe in potential future negotiations with Moscow over the continent’s security architecture.

The proposal, raised by Putin over the weekend as he signaled openness to discussing postwar security arrangements in Europe, was swiftly dismissed by EU officials who questioned both Russia’s intentions and Schroeder’s neutrality because of his longstanding ties to the Kremlin and Russian state energy companies.
“We would not be very wise to allow Russia to appoint a negotiator on our behalf,” Kaja Kallas told reporters during a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels.

Kallas said Schroeder’s close relationship with Putin made him unsuitable for any mediating role, adding that Moscow had shown no evidence it was prepared to engage sincerely in peace or security negotiations linked to the war in Ukraine.

Germany’s Europe minister, Gunther Krichbaum, also rejected the suggestion, saying Schroeder could not be considered an “honest broker” because of his political and business connections to Russia.

Schroeder, who served as German chancellor from 1998 to 2005, has maintained close personal ties with Putin and previously held senior roles in Russian state-controlled energy firms, relationships that have drawn sustained criticism across Europe since Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha similarly dismissed any role for Schroeder but said European governments could participate in negotiations complementary to ongoing U.S.-led diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the conflict.

A source familiar with the discussions said Sybiha proposed that European officials help mediate a narrower agreement between Russia and Ukraine to halt attacks on each other’s airports, describing the initiative as a more achievable objective than a comprehensive settlement to end the war.

The discussions reflect growing debate inside the EU over whether the bloc should eventually establish direct diplomatic channels with Moscow after more than four years of political isolation and sanctions imposed following Russia’s invasion.

Antonio Costa said last week he had begun consultations with European leaders on how the bloc should organize itself for possible future talks with Russia when conditions become appropriate.

Several ministers, however, argued the EU should intensify economic and political pressure on Moscow before considering formal negotiations or appointing any envoy.

Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kestutis Budrys said the immediate priority should be strengthening the bloc’s leverage against Russia rather than selecting mediators.

Austria’s foreign minister, Beate Meinl-Reisinger, said the EU should prepare to become more directly engaged in diplomacy with Moscow, while stressing that decisions on representation would be made by European governments, not Russia.

Islamabad — U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner arrived in Pakistan on Saturday to revive peace negotiations with Iran

Islamabad — U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner arrived in Pakistan on Saturday to revive peace negotiations with Iran amid a fragile ceasefire, as uncertainty persisted over whether Tehran would agree to direct talks with Washington after weeks of conflict that rattled global energy markets and disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

The White House said Witkoff and Kushner would hold an “in-person conversation” with Iranian representatives in Islamabad, but Iranian state media reported that direct negotiations were not planned and that Pakistan would instead act as an intermediary.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who arrived in Islamabad on Friday, delivered Tehran’s negotiating demands and concerns over U.S. conditions to Pakistani officials, a Pakistani source involved in the discussions told Reuters.

Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry said Araghchi’s visit focused on “ongoing efforts for regional peace and stability,” without explicitly confirming face-to-face engagement between Iranian and American officials.

Security across Islamabad was tightened sharply before the talks, with major roads sealed, military checkpoints reinforced, and troops deployed around the capital’s airport and heavily fortified Red Zone.Residents reported widespread disruption as police and soldiers controlled key intersections, helicopters circled overhead, and airport access routes were placed under heightened surveillance following the Iranian delegation’s arrival late Friday.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the renewed talks followed an Iranian request for direct engagement after President Donald Trump urged Tehran to return to negotiations.“The Iranians reached out, as the president called on them to do, and asked for this in-person conversation,” Leavitt said, adding that the talks would “hopefully move the ball forward toward a deal.”

Vice President JD Vance, who led a first round of negotiations in Islamabad earlier this month that ended without agreement, remained on standby to travel if required.Iranian state television, however, said Araghchi had no intention of meeting U.S. officials directly and that Islamabad would serve only as a channel for conveying Tehran’s proposals to Washington.

Iran’s military on Saturday warned it would respond if the United States continued what it described as a blockade of Iranian ports, calling the move “banditry” and “piracy.”In a statement carried by state broadcaster IRIB, Iran’s central military command Khatam Al-Anbiya said that if “the invading U.S. military continues blockading, banditry, and piracy in the region,” it would face retaliation from Iran’s armed forces.

“We are ready and determined, while monitoring the behavior and movements of enemies,” the statement said.Iran’s Defense Ministry separately said Washington was seeking a “face-saving” way to withdraw from the war.

“Our military power today is a dominant force, and the enemy is looking for a face-saving way to escape the war quagmire it has become trapped in,” ministry officials were quoted as saying by ISNA.Diplomatic efforts have stalled in recent weeks as Iran refused to rejoin formal negotiations while a U.S. naval blockade on its ports remained in place.

At the same time, Tehran has imposed a de facto restriction on the Strait of Hormuz, allowing only limited shipping through the strategic waterway that handles roughly one-fifth of global oil trade. The disruption has unsettled energy markets and raised concerns over broader supply chain instability.

Oil prices fell on Friday as hopes grew that the Islamabad talks could lead to de-escalation.European Council President Antonio Costa said the immediate reopening of the strait was essential.“The strait must immediately reopen without restrictions and without tolling,” Costa said.

“This is vital for the entire world.”Major Wall Street indexes closed at record highs on Friday as investors responded positively to corporate earnings and expectations of diplomatic progress.Meanwhile, Washington expanded its military presence in the region with the deployment of its third aircraft carrier, the USS George H.W. Bush, to the Middle East.

Araghchi is expected to travel next to Oman and Russia for further consultations on ending the conflict launched on Feb. 28 between Iran, Israel, and the United States.

The Islamabad talks are being closely watched as a potential turning point for whether the current ceasefire evolves into a broader settlement or gives way to renewed confrontation across the region.

Islamabad— The United States said it was optimistic that peace talks with Iran would proceed in Pakistan this week, while Tehran indicated it was considering participation, though uncertainty remained as a temporary ceasefire approached its expiry.

A Pakistani source involved in the negotiations said discussions were “on track” for Wednesday, despite earlier indications from Iran that it might not attend. U.S. President Donald Trump could join the talks either in person or virtually if an agreement is reached, the source added.

U.S. Vice President JD Vance is expected to travel to Pakistan for the переговоры, according to media reports, while Iranian officials said Tehran was “positively reviewing” whether to send a delegation, without confirming participation.

The diplomatic push comes as a two-week ceasefire in the conflict, which began on February 28, nears its end. A Pakistani source said the truce is expected to expire late Wednesday U.S. time.Financial markets reacted to signs of renewed diplomacy, with oil prices falling more than $1 and equities rising in early Asian trading amid expectations that talks could resume.

Brent crude traded near $94 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate fell below $88.Tensions remain elevated, however, following disputes over the U.S. blockade of Iranian ports and the recent interception of an Iranian vessel.

Tehran condemned the seizure and warned Washington would bear responsibility for any escalation.Iranian officials also reiterated that they would not negotiate under pressure. Senior figures, including Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, accused Washington of attempting to force concessions through economic and military pressure.

Washington has said it seeks an agreement that would prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons while stabilizing energy markets. Tehran, for its part, is seeking relief from sanctions and an end to hostilities without compromising its nuclear program.

The strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz remains central to the negotiations, as the waterway handles a significant share of global oil and gas shipments and has been affected by restrictions imposed during the conflict.

Pakistan, acting as a mediator, has deployed nearly 20,000 security personnel in Islamabad ahead of the potential talks, underscoring the high stakes and security concerns surrounding the negotiations.

Washington— Donald Trump said on Friday he may end the current ceasefire with Iran if a long-term agreement to halt

Washington— Donald Trump said on Friday he may end the current ceasefire with Iran if a long-term agreement to halt the conflict is not reached by Wednesday, while maintaining that negotiations were progressing toward a potential breakthrough.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One en route to Washington from Phoenix, Arizona, Trump said the naval blockade on Iranian ports would remain in place regardless of whether the truce is extended. “Maybe I won’t extend it,” he said, adding that without a deal, military operations could resume.

At the same time, Trump struck an optimistic tone about ongoing diplomacy, telling reporters that developments in the Middle East were “going very well” and suggesting a resolution was close. “I think it’s going to happen,” he said, referring to a prospective agreement.

In separate remarks, Trump said there were “no sticking points” remaining in negotiations, describing a deal as “very close,” though he did not provide details on the substance of the talks. The ceasefire, which has paused hostilities between U.S. and Iranian forces, remains fragile amid continued military pressure, including the blockade targeting Iranian ports.

The outcome of negotiations in the coming days is expected to determine whether the truce evolves into a longer-term settlement or collapses, potentially triggering renewed escalation.

Antalya—Sharaa on Friday said that could consider long-term negotiations with over the disputed , contingent on Israeli withdrawal from territories

Antalya—Sharaa on Friday said that could consider long-term negotiations with over the disputed , contingent on Israeli withdrawal from territories occupied following recent developments in Syria.

Speaking at a diplomatic forum in Antalya, Sharaa said Damascus was seeking either to revive the framework of the 1974 disengagement agreement or to establish a new arrangement guaranteeing security for both sides. He added that progress on such terms could open the door to extended negotiations on the broader Golan issue.

The remarks come after Israeli forces entered a United Nations-patrolled buffer zone separating Israeli and Syrian positions on the Golan Heights following the ouster of former Syrian leader in December 2024.

Sharaa accused Israel of violating the 1974 disengagement accord and said Syria was working toward a security agreement that would ensure Israeli withdrawal to positions held under that arrangement. He reiterated that any future negotiations would depend on restoring those lines.

Israel captured most of the Golan Heights from Syria during the and later annexed the territory, a move not recognised by most of the international community.

Earlier this year, Syrian Foreign Minister said ongoing discussions with Israel were focused on recently occupied areas and did not extend to the broader territorial dispute over the Golan Heights.

Israeli Prime Minister has repeatedly indicated that Israel does not intend to relinquish control over the territory it holds in the Golan Heights.

Islambad— Pakistan has proposed hosting a second round of talks between the United States and Iran in the coming days

Islambad— Pakistan has proposed hosting a second round of talks between the United States and Iran in the coming days ahead of the ceasefire deadline, Pakistani officials said, as both sides signal cautious willingness to continue negotiations despite failing to reach an agreement in earlier discussions.

Two Pakistani officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Islamabad has offered to again facilitate negotiations, although the final venue would depend on whether Washington or Tehran request an alternative location.

They described the initial round of talks as part of an ongoing diplomatic process rather than a one-off effort. The proposal follows marathon negotiations held on April 12 that ended without a breakthrough but were marked by what U.S. Vice President JD Vance described as “some progress,” particularly on Washington’s demands regarding Iran’s nuclear program.

In an interview with Fox News, Vance said Iranian negotiators had moved closer to U.S. positions on the removal of nuclear material and mechanisms to prevent future uranium enrichment, but were unable to finalize a deal, suggesting decisions may require approval from authorities in Tehran.

“There really is, I think, a grand deal to be had here,” Vance said, adding that the next step rests with Iran. The White House did not confirm whether preparations for a second round are underway. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt reiterated that U.S. negotiating positions remain unchanged and pointed to increased pressure on Iran following the implementation of a U.S. naval blockade.

Multiple sources familiar with the discussions said both sides are considering further in-person talks aimed at reaching an agreement before the ceasefire expires next week. While Islamabad remains a leading candidate to host the meeting, other locations such as Geneva are also under consideration, with timing still undecided but potentially within days.

A diplomat involved in mediation efforts said there is growing alignment on holding another round, though details on the level of representation and agenda remain unresolved.U.S. President Donald Trump said earlier that Iran had reached out seeking a deal, underscoring continued engagement between the two sides even as tensions persist.
