“For many men, wearing jeans during a heatwave is less about comfort than identity, practicality and long-established dressing habits.” As

“For many men, wearing jeans during a heatwave is less about comfort than identity, practicality and long-established dressing habits.”

As record temperatures swept across parts of the United Kingdom and continental Europe, many consumers adapted their wardrobes with lighter clothing to cope with the heat. Yet despite soaring temperatures, jeans continued to feature prominently in men’s everyday fashion, reflecting the enduring appeal of denim even during extreme weather.

The trend has been visible across both public life and the fashion industry. Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham maintained his familiar combination of dark indigo jeans and a dark blue T-shirt while travelling to London to be sworn in as Member of Parliament for Makerfield, even as unusually hot conditions affected much of the country.

A similar pattern emerged at Paris Men’s Fashion Week, where high temperatures prompted organisers and luxury brands to introduce measures aimed at improving comfort for guests. Several fashion houses distributed umbrellas and iced towels, while Dior shifted one of its runway presentations from the afternoon to the early morning to reduce exposure to extreme heat.

Despite those adjustments, denim remained a common feature among attendees. Dior creative director Jonathan Anderson appeared after the show wearing his customary outfit of vintage Levi’s jeans paired with Salomon trainers, even as France experienced record-breaking temperatures.

Retail data also suggests that consumer demand for jeans has remained resilient despite seasonal conditions. According to John Lewis, sales of indigo jeans produced by Nudie increased by 3% during the week. Online searches for Carhartt jeans doubled compared with the previous week, while searches for straight-fit Edwin jeans rose by 200% over the same period, despite considerably warmer weather.

Industry observers say the continued popularity of jeans reflects broader changes in men’s fashion rather than practical considerations alone.

Henrik Lischke, fashion news and features director at Grazia, said uncertainty surrounding men’s shorts has encouraged many consumers to remain with more familiar wardrobe choices. He argued that pairing jeans with a T-shirt or lightweight shirt remains one of the simplest approaches to summer dressing for many men.

Fashion specialists also point to wider cultural influences shaping men’s clothing decisions.

Andrew Groves, professor of menswear systems at the University of Westminster, said the preference for jeans during extreme temperatures reflects long-standing expectations surrounding masculinity and men’s dress codes. According to Groves, practicality is not always the primary motivation. Instead, jeans continue to represent ideas associated with utility, discipline and restraint, characteristics that have traditionally shaped mainstream menswear even when climatic conditions make alternative clothing more comfortable.

Supporters of denim, however, argue that jeans can remain suitable during warm weather when selected appropriately. Many note that denim is typically produced from cotton, a natural fibre known for its breathability, allowing garments to remain relatively comfortable under certain conditions.

Zak Maoui, style director at UK Esquire, said he continued wearing Levi’s 501 jeans throughout Paris Men’s Fashion Week despite the city’s heatwave. He argued that full-length jeans also provide protection from direct sunlight by covering the legs, reducing exposure to ultraviolet rays during extended periods outdoors.

Fashion retailers have similarly observed that consumers are adapting how they style denim rather than abandoning it altogether during the summer months. Loose-fitting shirts worn untucked to improve airflow, along with lightweight overshirts layered over T-shirts, have become increasingly common combinations designed to balance comfort with traditional denim styling.

Industry experts also distinguish between denim styles suited to different occasions.

Lischke recommends lighter blue denim inspired by 1990s fashion for informal settings, while darker indigo jeans remain appropriate for workplaces and more formal environments. He advises avoiding heavily distressed or stonewashed finishes when aiming for a more polished appearance.

Footwear also plays an important role in adapting denim for warmer weather. Loafers remain a versatile choice suitable for professional and social settings, while leather sandals or flip-flops provide more casual alternatives during weekends and holidays. Burnham has frequently paired his jeans with Adidas trainers as well as Birkenstock sandals, illustrating the flexibility of denim across different styles.

The discussion surrounding jeans has also coincided with renewed debate over the growing popularity of shorter men’s shorts in contemporary fashion.

Luxury brands and celebrity styling have increasingly embraced shorter hemlines in recent seasons, helping reshape perceptions of men’s summer clothing. However, fashion commentators suggest many consumers remain hesitant to adopt the trend, particularly outside holiday settings.

According to Lischke, shorts can be highly stylish regardless of age but are often viewed as more appropriate for informal environments such as beaches, gardens or leisure activities than offices or formal occasions. High-profile celebrities, including Harry Styles, have helped popularise shorter shorts, yet many men continue to favour jeans as a more universally accepted option across a wider range of settings.

The persistence of denim during periods of extreme heat highlights the balance consumers often strike between comfort, personal identity and established style preferences. While weather conditions continue to influence seasonal clothing choices, jeans remain one of the most resilient garments in men’s wardrobes, supported by consistent retail demand, cultural familiarity and their ability to transition between casual and professional environments despite changing climate conditions.
