JERUSALEM— said on Friday its military campaign against remains unfinished, even as a 10-day ceasefire with took effect, with officials

JERUSALEM— said on Friday its military campaign against remains unfinished, even as a 10-day ceasefire with took effect, with officials warning that hostilities could resume if objectives are not met.

Defence Minister said ground operations and air strikes had achieved “many gains” but had not fully neutralised Hezbollah’s presence in southern Lebanon. He added that areas between Israel’s declared security zone and the remained uncleared of militants and weapons.
Katz said the remaining objectives could be achieved either through diplomatic channels or renewed military action once the ceasefire expires. Under the terms of the truce, Israel retains the right to act against what it describes as imminent or ongoing threats from Hezbollah.

As the ceasefire came into force at midnight, displaced civilians in southern Lebanon began returning to their homes after weeks of conflict. However, Katz warned that a resumption of fighting would likely force another evacuation of those areas.

Israel has maintained a military presence in parts of southern Lebanon and established a security buffer zone along the border, which it says has been cleared of militant infrastructure and residents. The defence minister said operations would continue to target remaining positions, including structures Israel alleges were used for militant activity.

According to details released by the United States, the ceasefire framework also places responsibility on Lebanon, with international backing, to prevent Hezbollah from launching attacks against Israeli targets.

The developments highlight the fragility of the ceasefire and ongoing tensions along the Israel-Lebanon frontier, where both sides remain on alert despite a temporary halt in fighting.

Maiduguri— Dozens of people were killed in military airstrikes in northeastern Nigeria, residents, rights groups and a United Nations report

Maiduguri— Dozens of people were killed in military airstrikes in northeastern Nigeria, residents, rights groups and a United Nations report said, as the military said it was targeting militant positions linked to a long-running insurgency.

The strikes hit the village of Jilli on Saturday, with casualty figures varying widely. A UN security report seen by AFP said at least 56 people were killed and 14 injured when Nigerian Air Force fighter jets carried out the operation targeting suspected militants.

Amnesty International said more than 100 people were killed and 35 seriously wounded, while local chief Lawan Zanna Nur estimated total casualties, including injured, at around 200. A market committee member, Bulama Mulima Abbas, said 36 bodies had been counted at the scene, describing the victims as traders.

The Nigerian military said it had conducted a “precision air strike” on a known militant enclave and logistics hub near Jilli, reporting that “scores of terrorists” were killed but making no reference to civilian casualties.

In a separate statement, the air force said it had launched an investigation into reports that the strike may have hit a local market, causing civilian deaths.

Nigeria has faced repeated incidents of civilian casualties during air operations against insurgents, including fighters from Boko Haram and its splinter faction Islamic State West Africa Province, which have waged an insurgency since 2009.

Recent cases include a January 2025 airstrike in Zamfara state that killed at least 16 people after vigilantes were mistaken for armed groups, and a December 2023 strike in Kaduna state that killed at least 85 people when a religious gathering was misidentified as militants.

Violence has intensified in recent months, with more than 100 people killed across northern Nigeria in the past 10 days in attacks attributed to both insurgents and criminal gangs, according to local accounts. The security situation has drawn international scrutiny, including from Donald Trump, whose administration has pressed Nigeria to intensify its campaign against militant groups.

The United States has also deployed about 200 troops to provide technical and training support to Nigerian forces.

Nigeria’s government has stepped up legal action against suspected militants, with Justice Minister Lateef Fagbemi saying authorities had prosecuted 508 cases and secured nearly 386 convictions in mass terrorism trials.

Washington— U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday that the United States expects to reopen the Strait of Hormuz “fairly

Washington— U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday that the United States expects to reopen the Strait of Hormuz “fairly soon,” as efforts intensify to restore shipping through the critical energy corridor following disruptions linked to the ongoing conflict with Iran.

Speaking to reporters, Trump acknowledged the difficulty of the task and provided no operational details but indicated that other countries were prepared to assist. “It won’t be easy, we will have that open fairly soon,” he said, adding that multiple nations reliant on the waterway were offering support.

The Strait of Hormuz, which handles roughly 20 percent of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments, has seen traffic severely curtailed since Tehran effectively blocked passage following the outbreak of hostilities. The disruption has triggered sharp volatility in global energy markets and raised concerns over supply security.

The conflict escalated after U.S. and Israeli forces launched strikes on Iran on February 28, prompting retaliatory attacks by Tehran on Israel and U.S. military installations in Gulf states. The broader regional confrontation has resulted in significant casualties, mass displacement and sustained pressure on oil prices.Trump has also pressed allies to contribute more actively to securing the waterway.

Following talks with the U.S. president, Mark Rutte urged European governments to provide concrete commitments within days, according to Reuters reporting.A fragile ceasefire announced earlier this week between Washington and Tehran has yet to restore normal shipping flows through the strait.

Separately, the United Kingdom is set to convene another meeting next week involving countries seeking to reestablish safe maritime transit through the strait. The discussions are expected to include senior officials and focus on coordinated diplomatic, economic and potential security measures to ensure passage for commercial vessels.

The meeting follows earlier consultations involving dozens of countries, including foreign ministers and military planners, as governments weigh options ranging from sanctions on Iran to maritime security operations once conditions permit.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has said a credible plan is needed to reopen the route and stabilize global trade flows.

Dubai— Israel launched fresh airstrikes across Lebanon on Thursday, killing more civilians and escalating a conflict that threatens to derail

Dubai— Israel launched fresh airstrikes across Lebanon on Thursday, killing more civilians and escalating a conflict that threatens to derail a fragile regional ceasefire, as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said operations against Hezbollah would continue “wherever necessary.”

Lebanon’s health ministry said at least 203 people were killed and more than 1,000 wounded in widespread Israeli strikes on Wednesday, marking the deadliest day in over five weeks of renewed fighting between Israel and the Iran-backed group Hezbollah.

Netanyahu said Israel was continuing to strike Hezbollah targets with “force, precision, and determination,” adding that operations would persist until security is restored in northern Israel.

The Israeli military said it was also conducting ground operations in southern Lebanon and had struck crossings used by Hezbollah fighters, along with weapons storage sites and command centers. The escalation comes despite a ceasefire announced earlier this week by U.S. President Donald Trump following heightened tensions with Iran.

Israel and Washington have said the truce does not apply to Lebanon, while other countries have called for its expansion to include the country.Lebanon’s cabinet moved to tighten state control over security, with Prime Minister Nawaf Salam directing authorities to restrict weapons in Beirut to state institutions.

The government had previously banned Hezbollah’s military activities, though the group has continued operations.Iran warned that continued Israeli attacks on Hezbollah would carry “explicit costs and strong responses,” as diplomatic efforts to resolve the broader conflict remained uncertain.

Tehran has said no agreement would be reached while strikes on Lebanon continue. The Israeli military said it had killed a relative of Hezbollah Secretary-General Naim Qassem in recent strikes, identifying him as a close aide involved in the group’s operations.

Hezbollah said it had resumed attacks on Israeli positions after initially indicating it would pause operations in line with the ceasefire, firing across the border and targeting Israeli forces in southern Lebanon.

Rescue teams continued searching for survivors under rubble in Beirut and other affected areas after strikes hit densely populated neighborhoods, many without prior warning, according to local accounts.

The conflict has also intensified pressure on global energy markets, with disruptions linked to the broader regional crisis pushing oil prices sharply higher and raising concerns about supply stability.

Islambad — Pakistan on Thursday condemned Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon, saying the attacks, carried out amid a fragile United States-Iran

Islambad — Pakistan on Thursday condemned Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon, saying the attacks, carried out amid a fragile United States-Iran ceasefire, undermine efforts to stabilize the region and violate international law, according to a foreign ministry statement.

The statement came as hostilities persist despite a two-week truce between Washington and Tehran following weeks of heightened conflict. While Pakistan and Iran have indicated that the ceasefire should apply more broadly across the region, including Lebanon, the United States and Israel have maintained that the agreement does not extend to Israeli operations there.

“Pakistan condemns, in the strongest terms, the ongoing Israeli aggression against Lebanon,” the foreign ministry said, adding that the strikes had resulted in civilian casualties and extensive damage to infrastructure.

It described the actions as a “blatant violation of international law and fundamental humanitarian principles.”Islamabad called on the international community to take “urgent and concrete steps” to halt the attacks, warning that continued escalation risks derailing broader peace efforts in an already volatile region.

The ministry also reiterated Pakistan’s support for Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, expressing solidarity with its government and people.Lebanon has long been a focal point of regional tensions due to the presence of Hezbollah, an Iran-backed armed group operating along Israel’s northern border.

Israel has repeatedly conducted airstrikes targeting Hezbollah positions, arguing that the group poses a direct security threat.

The continuation of Israeli operations in Lebanon despite the U.S.-Iran ceasefire highlights the limited scope of the truce and underscores the risk of a wider regional spillover, as multiple actors remain engaged in parallel conflicts.

Jerusalem— Israel’s military said early Tuesday its air defence systems were activated to intercept missiles launched from Iran, shortly after announcing a wave of air strikes targeting Iranian territory.

The Israel Defense Forces said it had identified incoming missiles and was responding to the threat, confirming that defensive systems were operating to intercept them.

The exchange followed Israeli strikes described as a “wave” of air attacks on Iran, marking a further escalation in hostilities between the two countries.

No immediate details were provided on damage or casualties from the missile launches or interceptions.

The latest developments come amid intensifying cross-border attacks as the conflict between Israel and Iran continues to expand, raising concerns over broader regional escalation.

Jerusalem — Israel said on Friday it had struck more than 3,500 targets across Lebanon over the past month, as hostilities with the Iran-backed Hezbollah escalated in the wake of the broader regional conflict.

The Israeli military said the strikes targeted what it described as militant infrastructure, including weapons depots, launch sites and command centers, adding that around 1,000 fighters had been killed during the campaign.

Lebanon’s health ministry reported that at least 1,345 people have been killed and more than 4,000 wounded since the fighting began, including civilians and 53 healthcare workers. The ministry said the casualties included men, women and children, though Hezbollah has not publicly disclosed its own losses.

The conflict expanded to Lebanon on March 2 after Hezbollah launched rocket attacks on Israel, which it said were in response to earlier U.S.-Israeli strikes that killed Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Israel has since carried out extensive airstrikes and initiated a ground offensive, significantly intensifying the conflict along its northern front.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz warned that Hezbollah’s leadership, including chief Naim Qassem, would face severe consequences for continued attacks, particularly during the Jewish holiday of Passover.

He said Israeli forces aim to push Hezbollah fighters away from southern Lebanon, maintain security control over the Litani area and dismantle the group’s military capabilities.

The escalation has heightened concerns of a broader regional conflict, as cross-border exchanges continue and civilian casualties rise.

Cairo— Israeli air strikes hit two police checkpoints in southern Gaza Strip on Sunday, killing at least six Palestinians including a child, local health officials said, in the latest violence despite a U.S.-brokered ceasefire with Hamas now in place for over five months.

Medics said Israeli aircraft targeted two checkpoints operated by the Hamas-run police force in Khan Younis, killing three policemen and three civilians, including a girl, and wounding four others.

The Israeli military did not immediately comment on the strikes.Local health authorities said more than 680 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces in Gaza since the ceasefire took effect in November, underscoring persistent hostilities despite the agreement.

The total death toll in Gaza since the start of the war in October 2023 has surpassed 72,000, according to officials in the territory. The latest strikes come as Israel remains engaged in a broader regional conflict, including military operations linked to tensions with Iran and ongoing hostilities with Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.

Health officials in Gaza say at least 50 Palestinians have been killed since the escalation involving Iran began roughly a month ago.

Violence has continued intermittently across Gaza during the ceasefire period, with no indication of a sustained de-escalation.

Jerusalem— The Israeli military said on Sunday that a soldier was killed during combat operations in southern Lebanon, marking the fifth fatality among its forces since hostilities with Hezbollah intensified earlier this month.

In a statement, the army identified the soldier as Sergeant Moshe Yitzchak hacohen Katz, 22, a member of the Paratroopers Brigade’s 890th Battalion, originally from New Haven, Connecticut.

The military said the soldier “fell during combat in southern Lebanon,” without providing further operational details.

The latest casualty comes amid ongoing cross-border exchanges between Israeli forces and Hezbollah, which began launching rocket attacks on March 2. The group said the strikes were in retaliation for the killing of Ali Khamenei, an event that has heightened regional tensions.

Since the escalation began, at least five Israeli soldiers have been killed in combat operations along the northern front, according to military figures. The fighting forms part of a broader escalation involving Israel and Iran-aligned groups across the region, raising concerns of a wider conflict.

Exchanges of fire along the Israel-Lebanon border have intensified, with both sides reporting casualties and continued military activity.

Israel has not disclosed further details regarding the circumstances of the latest incident, and there was no immediate comment from Hezbollah.
