Washington-The United States military said it destroyed two Iranian attack drones over the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday after identifying

Washington-The United States military said it destroyed two Iranian attack drones over the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday after identifying them as threats to international shipping, marking the latest escalation in a rapidly intensifying confrontation between Washington and Tehran across the Gulf region.

U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said American forces operating in the Middle East intercepted the drones before they could threaten maritime traffic moving through one of the world’s most strategically important energy corridors.

“Earlier today, U.S. forces in the Middle East shot down two Iranian one-way attack drones that threatened international maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz,” CENTCOM said in a statement posted on X, adding that U.S. forces remained prepared to defend against what it described as Iranian aggression.

The incident followed another military exchange less than 24 hours earlier. CENTCOM said on Friday that American forces had shot down four Iranian attack drones launched toward the strait before conducting retaliatory strikes against Iranian coastal surveillance radar sites.

The latest actions underscore the growing risk to commercial navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime chokepoint connecting the Persian Gulf with global energy markets. Any disruption to shipping in the narrow waterway has the potential to affect international trade flows and energy supplies.

Saturday’s drone interceptions came amid a broader deterioration in regional security conditions. Earlier in the day, Iran launched missiles toward Bahrain and Kuwait, according to reports cited by regional officials, expanding the geographical scope of hostilities and drawing renewed concern from Gulf states.

The exchanges represent the latest chapter in an escalating conflict between the United States and Iran, even as both sides continue indirect diplomatic contacts aimed at exploring possible pathways toward ending the confrontation.

The juxtaposition of military operations and ongoing negotiations highlights the complexity of the current crisis, with diplomatic engagement proceeding alongside repeated battlefield escalations.

Neither Tehran nor Washington has indicated any immediate willingness to scale back military activities, raising concerns among regional governments and international shipping operators that further incidents in and around the Strait of Hormuz could increase tensions and heighten risks to maritime security.

The latest drone interceptions reinforce the central role of the waterway in the broader U.S.-Iran confrontation, as both sides continue to test each other’s military capabilities while seeking leverage in parallel diplomatic discussions.

Washington-An Iraqi man accused by U.S. authorities of helping plan attacks for the Iran-backed militia Kata’ib Hezbollah pleaded not guilty

Washington-An Iraqi man accused by U.S. authorities of helping plan attacks for the Iran-backed militia Kata’ib Hezbollah pleaded not guilty in a New York federal court on Monday and declared, “I am not a criminal,” during a brief courtroom outburst.

Mohammad Baqer Saad Dawood Al-Saadi faces eight charges, including conspiracy to provide material support to Kata’ib Hezbollah, which Washington designates as a terrorist organization.

Speaking through an interpreter, Al-Saadi told the court, “I am not guilty and we are in a war situation,” while also referencing children allegedly killed in a strike in Iran earlier this year.

U.S. prosecutors allege Al-Saadi helped plan around 18 attacks targeting American interests in Europe and was involved in plotting attacks in the United States, including against a synagogue in New York.

Al-Saadi was taken into U.S. custody in Türkiye last month. The case comes amid heightened tensions between Washington and Iran-backed groups across the Middle East and beyond.

Washington-The United States and Iran have reached a preliminary 60-day memorandum of understanding to extend a ceasefire and begin negotiations

Washington-The United States and Iran have reached a preliminary 60-day memorandum of understanding to extend a ceasefire and begin negotiations over Tehran’s nuclear program, but the arrangement still requires final approval from U.S. President Donald Trump, Axios reported on Thursday, citing two U.S. officials.

The reported agreement comes amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran following recent exchanges of air strikes and renewed concerns over regional stability and shipping security in the Gulf. According to the Axios report, the proposed understanding would temporarily preserve the ceasefire framework while opening a diplomatic channel focused on Iran’s nuclear activities.

Neither the White House nor Iranian authorities immediately issued public confirmation of the reported arrangement. The U.S. State Department also did not publicly comment on the Axios report.
The development follows remarks by Trump earlier this week indicating dissatisfaction with the pace and scope of negotiations involving Iran.

It also comes after reports of intensified military exchanges between the two countries, underscoring the fragile security environment surrounding any prospective diplomatic process.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio was photographed alongside Trump during a cabinet meeting at the White House on Wednesday, as the administration continued deliberations over Middle East policy and Iran strategy.

Any agreement to reopen structured nuclear negotiations would mark the most significant diplomatic engagement between Washington and Tehran in years. Previous talks aimed at reviving limits on Iran’s nuclear program had stalled amid disputes over sanctions relief, uranium enrichment levels and regional security guarantees.

Financial markets and regional governments have closely monitored developments involving Iran because of their potential implications for global oil supply routes, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime corridor for energy exports.

The Axios report said Trump’s final decision remained pending as administration officials reviewed the terms of the proposed understanding.

Seoul-South Korean President Lee Jae Myung criticized Israel on Wednesday over the detention of South Korean nationals in international waters, describing the action as “way out of line” and questioning its legality under international law.

Speaking during a cabinet meeting in Seoul, Lee said the South Korean citizens had been detained without valid legal grounds and suggested the incident required a firm diplomatic response from his government.

Lee did not provide further details regarding the identities of the detained nationals or the circumstances surrounding the arrests.

The remarks marked one of the strongest public criticisms of Israel by the South Korean administration since escalating tensions in the Middle East triggered broader international scrutiny over maritime operations and regional security measures.

Lee also referred to international legal pressure facing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, saying many European countries appeared prepared to act on warrants issued by the International Criminal Court.
However, Lee said South Korea would make an independent assessment regarding any potential legal or diplomatic measures involving Israel.

The comments come amid heightened international debate over maritime interdictions, humanitarian flotillas and military operations linked to the conflict in Gaza and wider regional tensions involving Israel and its allies.

Neither Israeli officials nor South Korea’s foreign ministry immediately issued additional public statements regarding the detentions.

Sukaimaniyah-Three major Iranian Kurdish opposition groups based in Iraq denied on Tuesday that they had smuggled American weapons into Iran,

Sukaimaniyah-Three major Iranian Kurdish opposition groups based in Iraq denied on Tuesday that they had smuggled American weapons into Iran, rejecting accusations by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards that armed factions linked to foreign powers were attempting to move munitions across the border.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said on Monday that unidentified groups operating from northern Iraq and allegedly acting on behalf of the United States and Israel had tried to transport a large cache of American weapons and ammunition into Iranian territory.

The accusations come amid heightened regional tensions following months of conflict involving Iran and Israel, despite a ceasefire announced in April.

Representatives of the Kurdish opposition groups, which maintain bases in Iraq’s autonomous Kurdistan region, dismissed the allegations as unfounded and politically motivated.

Party of Free Life of Kurdistan official Ahwan Chiako said claims regarding the seizure of weapons had “absolutely nothing to do with us.”

“We did not send weapons. No arms or equipment belonging to us have been seized by the Islamic regime,” Chiako told AFP.

Komala spokesperson Amjad Hossein Panahi said the accusations were “completely false” and served as justification for continued Iranian missile and drone strikes targeting areas in Iraq’s Kurdistan region.

An official from the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan, speaking anonymously because he was not authorized to address the media, also denied any involvement in weapons transfers into Iran.

Tehran has long accused Kurdish armed factions based in Iraq of collaborating with Western governments or Israel and classifies several of the groups as terrorist organizations.

Iran has repeatedly conducted cross-border missile and drone strikes against Kurdish opposition positions in Iraq since the outbreak of the broader Middle East conflict, although many camps and facilities had reportedly been evacuated before the attacks intensified.

Earlier in the conflict, speculation emerged in regional media suggesting that Kurdish opposition groups might coordinate with the United States in the event of wider instability inside Iran. Iranian authorities subsequently warned they would target any militant activity launched from Iraqi Kurdistan.

Deputy Prime Minister of Iraq’s Kurdistan region Qubad Talabani said in March that the United States was not supplying weapons to Iranian Kurdish opposition groups.

US President Donald Trump had earlier suggested support for anti-government unrest inside Iran before later stating that attempts to arm Iranian protesters had failed because Kurdish intermediaries allegedly diverted the weapons.

Paris-Finance ministers and central bank governors from the Group of Seven nations on Tuesday called for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, warning that continued disruption to one of the world’s most critical energy shipping routes could heighten risks to global economic stability and energy markets.

In a joint statement issued after meetings in Paris, the G7 officials said it was “imperative” to restore normal transit through the strategic waterway, which handles a substantial share of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments.

The statement was released following discussions among finance chiefs from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States, as tensions linked to the Middle East conflict continue to disrupt international trade and energy flows.

The ministers also emphasized the need to address widening global current account imbalances and reaffirmed their commitment to multilateral coordination in responding to threats facing the world economy.

The G7 warned against arbitrary export restrictions and stressed the importance of maintaining stable and predictable energy markets at a time of heightened geopolitical uncertainty and supply chain volatility.

The Strait of Hormuz, located between Iran and Oman, remains one of the world’s most strategically significant maritime chokepoints. Any disruption to traffic through the corridor can have immediate consequences for oil prices, shipping costs and inflationary pressures across major economies.

The latest G7 statement reflects growing international concern over the economic fallout from escalating regional tensions and the broader impact on global trade, energy security and financial markets.

Tehran-Iranian authorities staged mass public wedding ceremonies across Tehran for hundreds of couples enrolled in a state-backed wartime mobilization campaign,

Tehran-Iranian authorities staged mass public wedding ceremonies across Tehran for hundreds of couples enrolled in a state-backed wartime mobilization campaign, as the government sought to reinforce public morale during ongoing tensions with the United States and Israel.

The ceremonies, held Monday evening in several major squares across the Iranian capital, featured couples who had signed up for a so-called “self-sacrifice” initiative pledging readiness to support the country during wartime, according to Iranian state media.

More than 100 couples participated in one ceremony alone at Imam Hossein Square in central Tehran, Iranian media reported. Footage broadcast by state television showed newlyweds arriving in military jeeps equipped with mounted machine guns before taking part in marriage ceremonies led by clerics.

The events come amid heightened regional tensions following months of conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel, despite a fragile ceasefire announced in April.

Iranian authorities have promoted the “self-sacrifice” campaign, known in Persian as “janfada,” as a patriotic initiative encouraging civilians to demonstrate support for the state during wartime. State media said millions of Iranians, including senior political figures, had registered for the program.

Among those publicly associated with the initiative are Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf.

Images from the ceremony showed stages decorated with balloons and large portraits of Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, who assumed the position after the death of his father, former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, during the opening phase of the conflict earlier this year.

Participants interviewed by Iranian media described the ceremonies as both patriotic and religious occasions. One bride said young Iranians still had the right to marry despite wartime conditions, while another participant said the event coincided with the anniversary of the marriage of Imam Ali and Fatima, revered figures in Shia Islam.

Since the outbreak of the conflict in February, Iranian authorities have organized frequent public rallies and state-sponsored gatherings aimed at projecting national unity and public mobilization during the crisis.

Beirut— Joseph Aoun said on Monday he would do the “impossible” to end the conflict between Lebanon and Israel, as cross-border hostilities continued despite a ceasefire and ongoing indirect negotiations.

Aoun’s remarks came after Israeli strikes targeted several locations in southern Lebanon and the Iran-backed armed group Hezbollah announced a drone attack on what it described as a military target in northern Israel.

“The framework that Lebanon has set for the negotiations consists of an Israeli withdrawal, a ceasefire, the deployment of the army along the border, the return of the displaced, and economic aid,” Aoun said in a statement.

“My duty, based on my position and my responsibility, is to do the impossible, and to choose what is least costly, in order to stop the war against Lebanon and its people,” he added.

The ceasefire, initially reached on April 17, was extended by 45 days last week following a third round of talks between Lebanese and Israeli representatives in Washington. Hezbollah has opposed the negotiations.

Despite the truce, violence has persisted along the border. Hezbollah said Monday it launched a drone targeting an Iron Dome air defense platform at an Israeli military encampment in northern Israel, describing the strike as retaliation for Israeli ceasefire violations.

Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency reported multiple Israeli strikes across southern Lebanon, while the Israeli military issued evacuation warnings for residents in three southern Lebanese towns.

The latest escalation followed Israeli strikes on Sunday that Lebanese authorities said killed seven people, including a member of Palestinian Islamic Jihad in northeastern Lebanon, away from the border region.

Israeli forces have maintained operations inside parts of southern Lebanon within a self-declared “yellow line” extending roughly 10 kilometers north of the border. Israeli troops have also carried out demolitions in areas under their control.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday that Israel was confronting growing threats from first-person-view drones increasingly deployed by Hezbollah against Israeli forces.

According to Lebanese authorities, Israeli military operations have killed more than 2,900 people in Lebanon since the conflict began, including more than 400 since the ceasefire took effect in April.

Dubai-The International Atomic Energy Agency said on Sunday it was “gravely concerned” after a drone strike triggered a fire near the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in the United Arab Emirates, though Emirati authorities said there was no impact on nuclear safety or plant operations.

Authorities in Abu Dhabi said emergency teams responded to a fire in an electrical generator located outside the inner perimeter of the Barakah facility in the Al Dhafra Region following the drone strike.

The IAEA said it was closely monitoring developments and remained in continuous contact with UAE authorities, adding that it stood ready to provide assistance if required.

The Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation said radiological safety levels were unaffected and confirmed the plant’s critical systems continued operating normally.

“No injuries were reported, and there was no impact on radiological safety,” the Abu Dhabi Media Office said in a statement, adding that all operational units at the facility remained functional.

Authorities urged the public to rely on official information sources and avoid circulating unverified reports related to the incident.

The Barakah plant, located west of Abu Dhabi near the Saudi border, is the Arab world’s first operational nuclear power facility and plays a central role in the UAE’s strategy to diversify energy sources and reduce carbon emissions.

The incident comes amid heightened regional tensions and increased concerns over the vulnerability of critical energy and infrastructure facilities to drone and missile attacks across the Gulf region.

Neither UAE authorities nor the IAEA immediately identified those responsible for the drone strike.

Islamabad-Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi met Iranian counterpart Eskandar Momeni in Tehran on Saturday as Islamabad continued diplomatic efforts to

Islamabad-Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi met Iranian counterpart Eskandar Momeni in Tehran on Saturday as Islamabad continued diplomatic efforts to ease tensions linked to the Iran-U.S. conflict and disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz, according to Iranian state media.

Iran’s state-run reported that the two ministers discussed bilateral relations, including measures to facilitate border trade, transit and the exchange of goods between the neighboring countries during Naqvi’s unannounced visit to Tehran.

The meeting comes as regional tensions remain elevated following joint U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran on Feb. 28 that prompted Iranian retaliation and restrictions around the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping route carrying roughly one-fifth of global oil and gas supplies.

A ceasefire announced on April 8 has largely held, though negotiations between Washington and Tehran have made limited progress after an initial round of direct talks in Islamabad.

IRNA said Momeni thanked Pakistan for its “friendly and brotherly stance” toward Iran and described relations between the two countries as rooted in longstanding historical ties. Iranian media reports did not directly reference Pakistan’s mediation role in the Iran-U.S. dispute.

Pakistan’s government also did not publicly disclose details of Naqvi’s visit. A Pakistani interior ministry source confirmed to Arab News earlier that the minister had arrived in Iran but declined to elaborate on the purpose of the trip.

Iran’s mehrnews separately reported Naqvi’s arrival in Tehran for consultations with senior Iranian officials.
Naqvi had accompanied Pakistan army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir during a visit to Tehran in April as Islamabad intensified diplomatic contacts with regional capitals in an effort to encourage dialogue between Tehran and Washington.

Pakistan’s foreign ministry said last month it remained engaged in efforts to reduce regional tensions. Foreign ministry spokesperson Tahir Andrabi told reporters in Islamabad that “the clock on diplomacy has not stopped” and that discussions aimed at preserving the peace process were continuing.

Islamabad and Tehran have simultaneously sought to expand bilateral trade through border markets and barter arrangements designed to bypass banking and currency constraints. Iran has increasingly relied on alternative trading mechanisms amid sanctions pressure and foreign exchange shortages.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian visited Pakistan in August last year, when the two countries signed agreements targeting bilateral trade growth to $10 billion by 2028.

The visit also followed remarks by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in New Delhi on Friday that distrust toward Washington remained the principal obstacle in negotiations with the United States, while indicating Iran remained open to diplomatic support from regional countries.

Tensions in Gulf energy markets have persisted despite the ceasefire, with restrictions around Hormuz and continuing U.S. measures targeting Iranian ports contributing to shipping uncertainty and oil market volatility.
