Telangana – Violent clashes broke out on Monday between migrant workers and police in India’s southern state of Telangana, following the death of a factory employee.

The unrest occurred in Palakaveedu Mandal of Suryapet district, where hundreds of laborers—mainly migrants from the eastern state of Bihar—are employed at Deccan Cement, a major industrial unit.

Workers staged a sit-in demanding financial compensation for the family of a colleague who reportedly died of a heart attack on Sunday. Despite assurances from management, employees accused the company of failing to act, sparking anger.

The protest escalated when police arrived at the scene. Demonstrators allegedly pelted stones, set a police vehicle ablaze, and clashed with officers. A sub-inspector and a home guard sustained minor injuries.

Authorities confirmed that cases have been filed against several workers involved in the violence. Officials said the situation has since been brought under control.

Incidents of unrest involving India’s vast migrant workforce are not uncommon, as millions of laborers often face poor working conditions, limited social protections, and inadequate grievance mechanisms.
