DHAKA-Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has accepted an invitation from Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to make his first

DHAKA-Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has accepted an invitation from Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to make his first official visit to the Kingdom, a move both sides say is intended to deepen bilateral relations and expand cooperation in investment and other strategic sectors.

Saudi Ambassador Abdullah bin Abiyah delivered the invitation during a meeting with Rahman at the Cabinet Secretariat in Dhaka on Monday. The meeting was attended by Foreign Affairs Adviser Humayun Kabir and Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman.

Kabir said the prime minister had formally accepted the invitation and that the exact dates of the visit would be finalized later. He said the trip was most likely to take place after the summer.

According to Kabir, the visit represents an important milestone in relations between the two countries, describing Saudi Arabia as one of Bangladesh’s longstanding partners in the Middle East. He said the bilateral relationship dates back to the period following Bangladesh’s independence, when former President Ziaur Rahman helped establish diplomatic ties with the Kingdom.

Rahman, whose Bangladesh Nationalist Party secured a decisive victory in the February general election, assumed office earlier this year. Saudi Arabia’s ambassador became the first foreign envoy to meet him after he took office, underscoring the importance both governments attach to the relationship.

Kabir said Bangladesh was seeking to build what he described as a strategic, comprehensive and special partnership with Saudi Arabia. He added that the upcoming visit would help elevate bilateral ties and broaden cooperation across multiple sectors.

He also said a ministerial delegation from Saudi Arabia is expected to travel to Dhaka next week for discussions focused on investment opportunities.

Bangladesh hopes to attract Saudi investment in infrastructure, tourism, port management, agro-industry and other sectors as part of its broader economic development agenda, Kabir said.

Officials in Dhaka described the relationship with Saudi Arabia as extending beyond conventional diplomatic engagement, emphasizing long-standing political, economic and people-to-people links that they said have shaped cooperation between the two countries over several decades.

The planned visit would mark Rahman’s first official trip to Saudi Arabia since assuming office and is expected to provide an opportunity for the two governments to discuss expanding economic cooperation and strengthening their longstanding bilateral partnership.
