Jeddah – Jeddah recently hosted an inspiring masterclass that explored the creative power of sound in cinema, offering rare insights

Jeddah – Jeddah recently hosted an inspiring masterclass that explored the creative power of sound in cinema, offering rare insights into how music and sound design shape storytelling on screen.

The event was held at the Alliance Francaise of Jeddah in collaboration with the French Consulate, bringing together filmmakers, composers, and creative enthusiasts from across the city.

Led by Fanny Lamothe, CEO of Cercle Rouge Productions, the session also featured acclaimed composers Fabien and Mike Kourtzer, creating a rich environment for learning and exchange.

Participants were given an intimate look into the art and technical craft behind cinematic sound, an area often unseen but deeply felt by audiences worldwide.

Cercle Rouge Productions is known for its work on major international films as well as prominent Saudi productions, reflecting a strong bridge between global and regional cinema.

Lamothe shared her experience overseeing the full sound process in filmmaking, from composition and recording to editing, foley, and music clearance.

She emphasized that sound is not an afterthought but a narrative tool that deepens emotion and meaning, shaping how viewers connect with a story.

The masterclass focused on two essential themes: the structured process of composing original music for film and the importance of strong communication between composers and directors.

According to the speakers, understanding the director’s vision allows music to add a new emotional layer rather than simply accompanying visuals.

Lamothe explained that composing for culturally rich films involves research and dialogue, helping composers immerse themselves in the world and rhythm of each story.

She noted that cities themselves carry unique sounds and energies, which can subtly influence the musical identity of a film.

Music, she said, acts as a universal language, capable of transmitting emotions across borders when guided by a clear artistic vision.

Fabien Kourtzer highlighted how working with international directors expands creative perspectives and enriches musical expression.

He added that films from the Arab world offer a deep historical and cultural resonance that continues to influence their work globally.

Mike Kourtzer spoke about the rapid growth of Saudi cinema, describing it as driven by a strong desire to share authentic cultural stories with global audiences.

He expressed confidence that this momentum will lead to landmark works that stand out on the international audiovisual stage.

During the session, Lamothe offered practical advice to aspiring Saudi composers and filmmakers entering the field of film scoring.

She encouraged young creatives to invest time in truly understanding both the film and the director before composing a single note.

Building human connections, she said, is as important as technical skill, as trust and communication shape the final artistic outcome.

Lamothe also urged artists to understand their own musical identity, noting that individuality is what ultimately distinguishes a composer’s work.

Larry Lamartiniere, managing director of Alliance Francaise in Jeddah, described the masterclass as a meaningful cultural exchange.

He emphasized the importance of celebrating sound as a core element of storytelling and fostering collaboration between France and Saudi Arabia.

The event also marked a creative highlight alongside international film activities taking place in the Kingdom.

Such initiatives, he noted, help nurture emerging talent and strengthen long-term cultural partnerships.

With Saudi cinema expanding rapidly and attracting global attention, learning opportunities like this masterclass play a vital role in shaping the industry’s future.

They provide young filmmakers and composers with direct access to international expertise and real-world creative insight.

The speakers reaffirmed their commitment to working in Saudi Arabia, describing their experiences on local films as deeply rewarding.

They expressed enthusiasm for continued collaboration and for contributing to the Kingdom’s evolving cinematic landscape.

As Saudi Arabia continues to invest in culture and creative industries, events like this underscore the growing role of sound, music, and storytelling in global cinema.
