NEW DELHI-A social media post by 15-year-old batting prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has intensified speculation that he could make his senior India debut in the second Twenty20 International against England on Saturday, although there has been no official confirmation from the team management.

The Rajasthan Royals opener shared an Instagram story featuring himself batting in India’s blue jersey with the caption “New chapter.” The post quickly attracted widespread attention, with fans interpreting it as a possible indication that he may be included in India’s playing XI for the match at Old Trafford in Manchester.

Sooryavanshi earned his maiden senior national call-up after a prolific Indian Premier League campaign in 2026 but is yet to make his international debut. He was not selected for either of India’s two T20 Internationals against Ireland and also missed the opening match of the England series, which ended without a result after rain interrupted England’s chase.

According to reports, the teenager has been among the most diligent performers during India’s training sessions in England, spending extended periods in the practice nets and displaying impressive form with the bat.

Indian team officials have previously indicated that they do not intend to rush the young batter’s transition into international cricket despite his rapid rise through the domestic ranks. Nevertheless, his performances in training have continued to generate interest ahead of the second match of the series.

Sooryavanshi emerged as one of the standout performers in the 2026 IPL season while representing Rajasthan Royals. The left-handed opener scored 776 runs at a strike rate of 237.30, performances that earned him his first call-up to the senior Indian squad.

The opening T20I against England was abandoned after rain prevented a result, leaving the series evenly poised and increasing attention on India’s team selection for Saturday’s contest.

While Sooryavanshi’s Instagram post has fueled widespread discussion among supporters, neither the Board of Control for Cricket in India nor the team management has announced the playing XI or confirmed whether the teenager will make his international debut.

India’s final team selection for the second T20I is expected to determine whether one of the country’s brightest young batting prospects begins his international career in Manchester.

“Cape Verde transformed a knockout match into one of the tournament’s defining contests, forcing defending champions Argentina to rely on

“Cape Verde transformed a knockout match into one of the tournament’s defining contests, forcing defending champions Argentina to rely on experience and resilience to survive an extraordinary challenge.”

Cape Verde delivered one of the most significant performances of the 2026 FIFA World Cup by stretching defending champions Argentina to the limit before narrowly exiting in the Round of 32, producing a match that immediately entered the tournament’s defining narratives.

Playing in Miami, where Argentina captain Lionel Messi has become the central figure of the city’s football landscape through his club career, Cape Verde repeatedly neutralized one of international football’s strongest teams and forced the South American side into prolonged periods of uncertainty. Argentina eventually progressed, but only after being tested far beyond expectations by a nation with one of the smallest populations ever to reach the World Cup knockout stages.

Messi once again provided Argentina with a breakthrough through a high-quality goal that demonstrated the technical ability that has characterized his international career. However, the early advantage failed to establish control as Cape Verde consistently responded with disciplined defending and efficient attacking transitions that prevented Argentina from dominating the contest.

Cape Verde’s resistance was anchored by veteran goalkeeper Vozinha, who produced a series of decisive saves throughout the match. At 40 years of age, the goalkeeper relied on experience accumulated across professional spells in Moldova, Slovakia and Portugal’s second division to frustrate Argentina’s attackers during sustained periods of pressure.

His performance drew recognition from supporters following the final whistle, reflecting the influence he had on keeping Cape Verde competitive against one of the tournament favourites. The display also highlighted the growing importance of experienced players within smaller footballing nations capable of competing on the sport’s biggest stage.

Cape Verde’s attacking threat proved equally significant. Deroy Duarte scored an equaliser that shifted momentum and reinforced the team’s belief that an upset remained achievable. Sidny Lopes Cabral later added another goal, again bringing Cape Verde level and increasing pressure on Argentina as the knockout fixture moved into an extended contest.

Rather than relying solely on defensive organisation, Cape Verde demonstrated composure in possession and clinical finishing whenever opportunities emerged. The two equalisers ensured Argentina remained under constant pressure throughout regulation time and beyond, creating one of the closest knockout matches involving the defending champions.

The result ultimately preserved Argentina’s campaign, but only after the team had been forced into considerably greater physical and mental exertion than anticipated. Players from the defending champions were visibly emotional after securing qualification, underlining the intensity of a contest that remained uncertain until its closing stages.

Cape Verde’s campaign nevertheless represented a landmark achievement for the Atlantic island nation. Its progress to the knockout rounds and its performance against Argentina significantly raised the country’s international football profile, with global audiences becoming increasingly familiar with the archipelago located off Africa’s western coast.

The match also reinforced a recurring feature of the expanded 2026 World Cup format, where additional qualification places have allowed emerging football nations to compete against established powers. While debate has continued over the enlarged tournament structure and the longer group stage, Cape Verde’s performance illustrated how broader participation can create highly competitive knockout fixtures involving teams with vastly different footballing histories.

Argentina now advances to a Round of 16 meeting with Egypt in Atlanta. Egypt secured its place after defeating Australia in a penalty shootout, with the contest drawing attention for goalkeeper Mat Ryan’s role during the decisive moments of the shootout. Argentina’s preparation for that fixture is likely to focus on physical recovery after an unusually demanding knockout encounter.

Away from the action on the field, scheduling issues also became a point of discussion during the tournament. Mexico head coach Javier Aguirre criticised uncertainty surrounding the kickoff time for his team’s Round of 16 meeting with England after reports suggested FIFA intended to bring the match forward by six hours because of forecasts of thunderstorms and flooding in Mexico City.

“The schedule change hits like a kick in the stomach. We have to change the entire plan. I don’t like it at all,” Aguirre said while reacting to the proposed adjustment.

The reported alteration created uncertainty for both teams before FIFA later retained the original 6 p.m. local kickoff time. The episode highlighted the logistical challenges tournament organisers continue to face when balancing player safety, weather forecasts and broadcast commitments during a competition spread across multiple host countries.

Discussion surrounding the expanded tournament has also continued among supporters and commentators. While some observers have questioned the longer schedule and tournament format, matches such as Cape Verde’s contest against Argentina have demonstrated the competitive opportunities created by the revised structure.

Cape Verde’s performance has already become one of the defining stories of the competition despite the team’s elimination. The disciplined organisation, effective finishing and resilience displayed against the reigning world champions earned widespread recognition and provided one of the strongest examples of how smaller footballing nations can compete successfully against elite opponents on football’s biggest stage.

For Argentina, progression ensured the defence of its world title remained intact, but the narrow margin of victory exposed the increasingly competitive nature of international football’s expanded landscape. The defending champions ultimately advanced through experience and quality, yet the encounter served as a reminder that knockout football frequently narrows the gap between established powers and ambitious emerging nations.

As the tournament moves into the Round of 16, Cape Verde exits with its international reputation significantly enhanced after producing a performance that extended Argentina to the edge of elimination and ensured the island nation would remain among the standout stories of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

“On the day of the game, we are all family.” Mexico City’s streets, cafés and public squares have become focal

“On the day of the game, we are all family.”

Mexico City’s streets, cafés and public squares have become focal points of national attention as supporters prepare for the country’s World Cup meeting with England, with growing confidence surrounding the national team’s campaign transforming the atmosphere across the capital.

In the historic Zócalo, one of the country’s largest public gathering places, thousands of supporters have assembled throughout the tournament to watch Mexico’s matches on giant screens. The square has emerged as a symbol of the collective enthusiasm accompanying the national team’s progress, with fans describing a sense of unity that extends beyond families and local communities.

Angie, who planned to watch the match alongside other supporters, said the tournament had reinforced a longstanding sense of national solidarity among Mexicans. “Wherever we watch, the great thing about Mexicans is that it seems we all know each other,” she said. “On the day of the game, we are all family.”

The buildup to the England fixture has spread beyond traditional football venues. In La Roma, a neighborhood known for its cafés, restaurants and cultural spaces, conversations have increasingly centered on the national team’s performances. Residents and visitors described a noticeable shift in public sentiment as Mexico advanced through the knockout rounds.

Pablo, speaking outside a café in La Roma, recalled the celebrations that followed Mexico’s victory over Ecuador. He said major avenues including Paseo de la Reforma remained crowded late into the night as supporters celebrated with vehicle horns, musical instruments and spontaneous street gatherings.

“It was quite incredible to experience,” he said, describing thousands of supporters filling the city’s main boulevard following the victory.

According to Pablo, celebrations have intensified as Mexico has continued progressing in the tournament. He said previous national teams often entered decisive matches with widespread public skepticism, but the current squad has gradually generated stronger public confidence through its performances.

“I think the more we’ve been winning games, through the group stage onwards, people have been believing more,” he said. “With previous Mexican teams there was a little bit of doubt but we’ve been able to have more faith in the team.”

That growing optimism has been reflected in the widespread popularity of the phrase “¿Y Si Sí?”—translated as “What if they can?”—which has become increasingly associated with Mexico’s unexpected tournament run. The expression captures cautious optimism rather than certainty, reflecting supporters’ awareness of the challenges posed by England while acknowledging the team’s recent performances.

Attention has also focused on 17-year-old midfielder Gilberto Mora, whose display against Ecuador attracted significant praise from supporters. Pablo described Mora’s composure as exceptional for a player of his age and expressed hope that the teenager would eventually move to a European club, arguing that greater international exposure could benefit both the player’s development and Mexico’s national team.

“It’s just incredible what he is doing,” Pablo said. “I hope he gets a move abroad soon. Mexican players tend to stay in the local league but it would only help him and the national team.”

Mexico’s football culture has long been closely connected with family traditions and community gatherings, and supporters interviewed across the capital repeatedly linked the tournament to personal experiences extending beyond the sport itself.

Principia said this year’s World Cup coincided with a significant moment for her family after her grandmother died in Guadalajara on the day Mexico played South Africa. Following the family’s traditional nine-day mourning period, she proposed that relatives travel together to Mexico City to experience the tournament among other supporters.

“I just said, ‘Why don’t we go?'” she recalled.

She said the gathering became an opportunity for relatives who had not spent meaningful time together in more than a decade. For her family, she said, attending public celebrations in the capital transformed a period of grief into one of reunion.

“We took all the tears and emotion from grandma, who we felt was uniting us from beyond,” she said. “None of us had spent time together as a family in over a decade and here we were enjoying the World Cup.”

While enthusiasm has dominated much of the city, not every resident has embraced the football frenzy with the same intensity. Marco, a taxi driver, said he followed the sport only occasionally and viewed Sunday’s result without strong personal preference.

“I don’t watch a lot of football,” he said. “It will be about luck. If Mexico wins, fine; if England wins, OK. I think they’re both playing very well.”

Even so, Marco acknowledged that Mexico’s home environment could influence the contest. He pointed to the atmosphere expected inside the Azteca Stadium, where large crowds have historically created one of international football’s most recognizable home advantages.

“You’re going to have a stadium entirely full of Mexicans going crazy for their national team,” he said. “It’s very difficult to play against a whole nation.”

The Azteca Stadium occupies a unique place in football history, having hosted two FIFA World Cup finals and numerous landmark international matches. The venue has frequently been regarded as one of the sport’s most demanding away fixtures because of its capacity, altitude and consistently intense support for the Mexican national team.

England’s visit also revives memories of previous meetings between the two football nations, including matches that have carried historical significance within the wider narrative of international football. Although supporters remain conscious of Mexico’s strong record at the Azteca, many also recognize the challenge posed by an England side entering the match after its own successful tournament campaign.

Outside the Zócalo fan festival, Alejandra said supporters were balancing confidence with caution as kickoff approached.

“We are very anxious,” she said. “We know England will come here very strong. But obviously we all trust Mexico.”

Across Mexico City, that combination of expectation and restraint has shaped the atmosphere before the match. Public viewing areas, cafés and major thoroughfares have become gathering points where conversations reflect both confidence in the national team’s recent performances and recognition of the significance of facing one of the tournament’s strongest opponents. As supporters prepare to fill the Azteca Stadium and public squares across the capital, anticipation continues to build around a fixture viewed by many as one of the defining moments of Mexico’s World Cup campaign.

“He told me exactly what my role would be. Knowing where I stand allows me to stay ready whenever the

“He told me exactly what my role would be. Knowing where I stand allows me to stay ready whenever the opportunity comes.”

England striker Ivan Toney says clear communication with head coach Thomas Tuchel has resolved earlier misunderstandings and helped define his role within the national team’s squad at the FIFA World Cup, with the forward prepared to make an impact from the bench whenever called upon.

Speaking ahead of England’s final Group-stage fixture against Panama in New Jersey, Toney acknowledged that he currently sits behind captain Harry Kane and, in all likelihood, Ollie Watkins in the team’s centre-forward hierarchy. Rather than viewing that position as a source of frustration, the 30-year-old said clarity from the coaching staff has enabled him to focus entirely on contributing whenever opportunities arise.

The comments come after England’s goalless draw against Ghana in their second group match, a result that left qualification scenarios still active heading into the final group fixture. While Toney remained an unused substitute, he described a light-hearted exchange with one of his sons after the match that illustrated the realities of tournament football from a family perspective.

According to Toney, his young son questioned why he had travelled to watch him without seeing him take the field. The striker laughed while recounting the conversation, adding that his son was equally eager to meet several of England’s established stars, including Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice, after the final whistle.

Despite limited playing time, Toney indicated that he fully understands the responsibilities assigned to him within Tuchel’s squad. He said the coaching staff view him as a specialist option capable of changing matches during the closing stages, particularly in situations where England require a goal or an increased physical presence inside the penalty area.

His responsibilities include providing an aerial threat, competing aggressively for second balls, creating uncertainty for opposing defenders and offering another target during set-piece situations. Such tactical roles have become increasingly valuable in tournament football, where matches are frequently decided by late goals or dead-ball situations.

Toney’s return to the England squad followed discussions within Tuchel’s coaching staff after the March international window, during which other striking options, including Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Dominic Solanke, failed to firmly establish themselves. As the coaching staff evaluated different match scenarios and potential tactical alternatives, Toney’s profile emerged repeatedly during internal conversations.

One factor influencing that assessment was the familiarity several members of the coaching staff had with the striker. Assistant coach Justin Cochrane had previously worked alongside Toney during their time at Brentford and was able to provide detailed insight into both the player’s character and professional standards. Additional recommendations came from Al-Ahli manager Matthias Jaissle, who shares a longstanding football connection with Tuchel dating back to their time at Stuttgart, where Jaissle played under the German coach during his early coaching career.

Those conversations eventually led Tuchel to meet directly with Toney to address concerns arising from previous interactions and to explain precisely how he intended to use the striker during the tournament.

Toney said the discussions were constructive rather than confrontational. He rejected the idea that either side needed to apologise, describing the meetings instead as an opportunity for both men to better understand one another.

According to Toney, Tuchel had not previously known him well away from the football pitch, while the striker himself gained greater insight into the manager’s expectations. He added that positive feedback from teammates and people outside football also helped provide a fuller picture of his personality.

“There may have been some miscommunication,” Toney said. “We spoke openly, cleared the air and now we’re on the same page.”

He explained that one of the most important outcomes of those discussions was receiving an honest assessment of where he stood within England’s plans before the tournament began.

Toney said uncertainty over selection can become mentally challenging for players during major competitions, making transparency from the coaching staff particularly valuable. Knowing exactly what was expected, he said, allowed him to fully commit to the squad’s objectives without unnecessary distractions.

The striker also emphasised the importance of maintaining a positive influence within the dressing room regardless of individual playing time. He acknowledged that every professional footballer naturally wants to play more minutes but said supporting teammates, training at a consistently high level and contributing positively to the squad environment remain essential responsibilities throughout an international tournament.

England’s current squad has undergone notable changes compared with the group assembled during the previous international cycle. Several players involved in last year’s camp, including Kyle Walker, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Curtis Jones and Conor Gallagher, are no longer part of the current tournament squad. Toney, however, retained Tuchel’s confidence after their discussions and subsequent performances in training.

“The extreme heat is no longer only an environmental issue; it is increasingly becoming a healthcare emergency affecting patient safety

“The extreme heat is no longer only an environmental issue; it is increasingly becoming a healthcare emergency affecting patient safety and hospital operations.”

Hospitals across England are facing growing operational challenges as prolonged high temperatures disrupt clinical services, strain ageing infrastructure and complicate patient care, with frontline doctors warning that extreme heat is increasing health risks for vulnerable patients while exposing weaknesses in the National Health Service’s preparedness for climate-related events.

Several NHS hospitals have declared critical incidents after high temperatures affected essential equipment, including radiotherapy machines, MRI scanners, cooling systems and information technology infrastructure. Medical staff working across England say unusually hot conditions are also contributing to higher patient admissions, particularly among elderly and medically vulnerable people who struggle to regulate body temperature.

Doctors working in acute medical units report that heat-related illness has become a frequent feature of daily clinical practice. A resident doctor in north-west England said temperatures inside staff offices reached 36 degrees Celsius despite the absence of air conditioning or adequate ventilation. During one ward round, several patients required treatment after developing complications associated with the heat, including falls linked to postural hypotension and cases of pre-renal acute kidney injury caused by dehydration.

According to the doctor, many affected patients required intravenous fluids because existing hospital wards were unable to maintain comfortable indoor temperatures. The clinician also noted that some patients taking medications known to increase vulnerability during periods of extreme heat had not received advice on adjusting treatment or hydration during unusually warm weather before being admitted to hospital.

The doctor described an emergency response involving a patient experiencing seizures inside a poorly ventilated treatment room where staff worked under physically demanding conditions. The experience, the clinician said, demonstrated that both healthcare workers and patients are increasingly affected by rising temperatures and highlighted the need for improved planning, stronger clinical guidance and infrastructure capable of coping with more frequent heatwaves.

Consultants working in emergency departments reported that overcrowding has become more difficult to manage during the current heatwave. A consultant in Surrey said corridor care, already a longstanding pressure across parts of the NHS, has become significantly more challenging because of the heat. Limited bed availability has forced hospitals to place patients opposite one another in temporary care spaces, reducing privacy and making confidential medical discussions difficult.

The consultant said emergency teams have been required to perform resuscitation procedures, clinical examinations, blood sampling and catheter insertions in corridors due to space constraints. Such environments, the doctor said, create additional infection control concerns and make it harder to deliver care that meets expected clinical standards.

Older patients have been particularly affected. According to the consultant, some elderly and frail individuals remain in temporary corridor spaces for extended periods while awaiting inpatient beds, with some spending entire nights seated because standard hospital beds are unavailable. The doctor added that several hospitals are now operating multiple designated corridor care areas simultaneously to manage patient demand.

Healthcare professionals working in London also described the practical difficulties of caring for elderly patients during prolonged hot weather. A resident doctor working on a ward for older adults said hospital staff had implemented measures including keeping curtains closed and deploying portable cooling units where available. Despite those efforts, ward temperatures remained uncomfortably high.

The doctor said maintaining adequate hydration among elderly patients had become increasingly difficult because many older people naturally have a reduced ability to regulate body temperature and may struggle to drink sufficient fluids independently. Medical teams have consequently relied more frequently on intravenous fluid therapy to prevent dehydration and its complications.

The clinician also noted that measures intended to reduce indoor temperatures, including closing curtains throughout the day, can unintentionally worsen confusion and delirium among patients with cognitive impairment by limiting exposure to natural daylight.

Doctors working across London reported similar experiences. One consultant said colleagues recorded office temperatures of approximately 35 degrees Celsius while concerns grew over insufficient cooling equipment and limited access to electric fans for vulnerable patients, including those living with dementia or receiving end-of-life care.

The consultant described one ward where an end-of-life patient remained in temperatures of approximately 32 degrees Celsius without access to a fan. The doctor also said maternity services had experienced difficulty maintaining comfortable conditions for women during labour as hospitals struggled to regulate indoor temperatures.

In addition to direct effects on patient care, hospital technology has also been affected by the heat. The consultant reported that computers on wheels, commonly used by clinical staff to access electronic patient records during ward rounds, stopped functioning after overheating, adding further operational challenges during periods of high clinical demand.

Medical staff interviewed across different regions consistently linked the current pressures to broader concerns about climate resilience within healthcare. Several doctors argued that extreme heat events are becoming more frequent and should be regarded as an important public health issue rather than isolated seasonal incidents.

Clinicians also called for greater public awareness regarding the health risks associated with prolonged hot weather, particularly for older adults and people taking medications that may increase dehydration or heat sensitivity. They said clearer clinical guidance, improved patient education and investment in hospital infrastructure could reduce preventable admissions during future heatwaves.

Doctors further stressed the need for healthcare facilities to strengthen resilience through improved ventilation, modern cooling systems and contingency planning designed to protect both patients and staff during periods of extreme temperatures. They said existing hospital buildings, many of which were designed for cooler climatic conditions, are increasingly unable to maintain safe indoor environments during prolonged heat events.

The experiences described by clinicians indicate that rising temperatures are placing additional pressure on emergency departments, inpatient wards and clinical infrastructure at a time when many NHS hospitals are already operating under significant capacity constraints. Healthcare workers say adapting hospitals to withstand more frequent heatwaves will become increasingly important as climate-related health risks continue to affect patient care across England.

London- British police said on Friday they had released on bail a 30-year-old man arrested on suspicion of attempted murder

London- British police said on Friday they had released on bail a 30-year-old man arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a three-year-old boy was found seriously injured inside a crocodile enclosure at a private zoo in eastern England.

The child remained in a critical but stable condition at a hospital in Cambridge following the incident at Johnsons of Old Hurst, a privately owned zoo in Cambridgeshire, police said.

Authorities had detained a man from Norfolk on suspicion of attempted murder after emergency services responded to reports of a seriously injured child at the zoo. Police later said the suspect had been assessed as not fit for interview and was released on bail until Sept. 18 while investigations continue.

Investigators have not disclosed how the boy sustained his injuries and said they did not believe the suspect and the child were known to each other.

According to police, zoo staff pulled the child from the crocodile enclosure and administered emergency medical treatment before he was transported to hospital.

“Our thoughts remain with the boy and his family and specialist officers continue to support them through this difficult time,” Detective Inspector Verity McCann said in a statement.

Johnsons of Old Hurst said it had temporarily closed its Tropical House section out of respect for the child’s family, while the remainder of the zoo continued operating.

British media reported that the wife of the zoo’s owner entered the enclosure and helped rescue the child, although police have not publicly commented on those reports.

The facility, which also includes a farm shop, butcher’s shop, tea room and steakhouse, houses more than 100 animals, including lions, tigers, sloth bears, capybaras, meerkats and crocodiles, according to information published on its website.

Police said inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident remain ongoing.

London— Resident doctors in England have suspended planned strike action after receiving a new government pay offer, their unions said

London— Resident doctors in England have suspended planned strike action after receiving a new government pay offer, their unions said on Saturday, raising the possibility of a resolution to a long-running dispute over wages and staffing.

The walkout, scheduled from Monday to Friday, would have been the 16th strike by resident doctors since 2023 in a dispute over what the British Medical Association (BMA) described as years of pay erosion and pressure on the National Health Service.

The BMA said it would hold a referendum on the government proposal and pause industrial action while members consider the offer.

“We have always been clear that no strikes needed to go ahead if we received an offer appropriate to put to our members,” BMA committee chair Jack Fletcher said.

The union represents about 55,000 of England’s approximately 75,000 resident doctors, previously known as junior doctors.

The proposed deal includes a 3.5 percent pay increase this year, in line with recommendations from an independent review body. The Department of Health said resident doctors would receive an average increase of about 4.9 percent under the wider package.

The BMA said the package could raise average pay growth to 6.6 percent by April 2027, with further increases expected later.

Health Minister James Murray said the agreement could help end years of industrial disputes and improve stability in the health service.

Resident doctors have received total pay increases of 33.4 percent over four years, including this year’s rise, although the BMA has argued that inflation-adjusted pay remains below 2008 levels.

The offer also includes 4,500 additional training places over three years, measures to address employment pressures among medical trainees, annual progression for part-time doctors and improved additional payments for medical academics.

“For many residents, the financial penalty marks accountability, but not closure, as some continue to report lasting health impacts and

“For many residents, the financial penalty marks accountability, but not closure, as some continue to report lasting health impacts and deep mistrust of their water supplier.”

More than a year after a cryptosporidium contamination incident affected drinking water supplies in parts of Devon, residents in some of the hardest-hit communities say they continue to face health challenges and remain dissatisfied with the response from water provider South West Water.

The outbreak, which affected communities including Higher Brixham and Kingswear, prompted boil-water notices and led to hundreds of reported illnesses. While official figures from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) recorded 143 confirmed cases, many residents believe the true number of people affected was significantly higher.

The controversy resurfaced after South West Water admitted supplying water unfit for human consumption and was subsequently fined by a court. The company has stated that a damaged air valve and unauthorized pipework on a farm were believed to have caused the contamination. For some families, however, the consequences extend well beyond the legal proceedings.

Michelle, a foster carer in Higher Brixham, recalled the distress of discovering that a child in her care had contracted cryptosporidiosis after consuming contaminated water. She said one of the most difficult moments was informing the child’s birth family about what had happened.According to Michelle, she continues to feel guilt over the incident despite having had no knowledge that the water supply had been compromised at the time.

Residents have also reported longer-term health complications that they associate with the outbreak.Jen Watts, who lives in Higher Brixham, said her 10-year-old son spent four days in hospital after becoming ill during the contamination event. She said he subsequently developed avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder and continues to experience health challenges.

Watts described the impact on her family as ongoing and severe. While welcoming the court-imposed fine against South West Water, she argued that the punishment did not directly address the continuing difficulties faced by affected residents. She said stronger penalties should have been considered given the scale of the incident and the lasting consequences experienced by some families.

South West Water has maintained that it acted once contamination was identified. The company previously stated that it received its first notification of illness from the UK Health Security Agency on the afternoon of 13 May 2024. According to the company, cryptosporidium was detected during the early hours of 15 May, after which affected residents were advised to boil drinking water.

The company has also said it implemented additional safeguards designed to prevent a similar incident from occurring in the future. In Kingswear, another community significantly affected by the outbreak, residents continue to describe both physical and emotional consequences.

Jo Byrne, manager of the village post office, said she initially believed she was suffering from food poisoning before learning of the contamination. She reported severe illness and substantial weight loss over a short period.Although she returned to work as quickly as possible, Byrne recalled struggling with exhaustion and said she now lives with irritable bowel syndrome.

She remains highly critical of South West Water and said she no longer trusts the company’s drinking water supply.Christopher Dawes, a member of Kingswear Parish Council, also fell ill during the outbreak. He described several days of severe gastrointestinal symptoms but said most residents had eventually resumed drinking tap water.

Even so, Dawes noted that anger toward the company remains widespread within the community more than a year after the incident. The scale of the outbreak remains a point of contention among local residents.Several people interviewed questioned the official case count, arguing that many individuals who became sick may never have been formally diagnosed or included in official statistics.

Zanne Henderson, who operates a seafood business in Kingswear, said she believed the number of affected residents was substantially higher than the figure reported by health authorities.Henderson said she began experiencing symptoms on 10 May 2024 and described the illness as particularly severe.

Like many people suffering from gastrointestinal infections, she increased her water intake during the early stages of illness, unaware that the water itself was the source of contamination.More than a year later, she believes her immune system remains affected.

While there is currently no formally recognized medical condition known as “long crypto,” Henderson said ongoing symptoms have left her feeling as though she has never fully recovered. The outbreak also had economic implications for local businesses and tourism-dependent communities.Kingswear and surrounding areas rely heavily on visitors, particularly during the warmer months.

Henderson said the contamination incident damaged local morale at a time when businesses were still recovering from the economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.Residents said concerns about water safety created uncertainty for both visitors and local enterprises during a critical period for the area’s economy.

The incident has become part of a broader national debate over water infrastructure, regulatory oversight and accountability among privately owned water companies in England. For affected residents, however, the issue remains deeply personal. While the court case and fine represent an acknowledgment that contaminated water entered the public supply, many say the legal outcome does not fully reflect the disruption, illness and anxiety they experienced.

Questions about the precise number of people affected, the speed of the company’s response and the long-term health implications continue to shape local perceptions of the outbreak.

As communities in Higher Brixham and Kingswear move further from the events of May 2024, many residents say their confidence in the drinking water system has not been fully restored, and for some families the effects of the contamination remain an ongoing part of daily life.

“Thank you so much.” — Pep Guardiola’s final words at a celebration marking the end of his Manchester City tenure.

One day after an emotional farewell at the Etihad Stadium, Pep Guardiola was honored with a large-scale celebration attended by players, former teammates, club legends and supporters as Manchester City formally marked the end of one of the most successful managerial reigns in modern football.

The event, held at the Co-op Live arena in Manchester, followed the club’s victory parade through the city and transformed what had been a tearful goodbye into a festive celebration of Guardiola’s achievements. Thousands of supporters packed the venue after spending the day lining the streets for a bus parade involving Manchester City’s men’s, women’s and youth teams.

Guardiola, 55, arrived alongside current players and club officials as the atmosphere shifted from reflection to celebration. The arrival of the team buses on either side of the stage drew loud cheers from supporters, while chants associated with several City stars echoed throughout the arena.

Among the players attracting attention was Rodri, who joined teammates in celebrating with supporters during the event. Fans repeatedly sang tributes to players including Bernardo Silva and John Stones, while chants dedicated to Guardiola underscored his enduring popularity among the club’s fan base. The evening also produced a significant announcement concerning City’s women’s team.

On stage, Khadija Shaw revealed that she would remain with the club despite speculation about her future. Shaw, one of the leading figures in women’s football, confirmed her commitment to Manchester City and expressed her desire to pursue further success with the team.

The announcement carried additional significance given Shaw’s recent performances. The striker finished as the Women’s Super League’s leading scorer, registering 21 goals in 22 matches during City’s title-winning campaign. Shortly after her appearance, confirmation of a new four-year contract was distributed to media covering the event.

Another notable participant was Noel Gallagher, one of Manchester City’s most prominent supporters. Gallagher shared a symbolic role in the farewell proceedings, having conducted Guardiola’s first major interview after the manager’s arrival at the club in 2016.

A decade later, Gallagher was again on stage to interview Guardiola during a ceremony that effectively closed the chapter on the manager’s time in Manchester. The exchange highlighted the close relationship that developed between Guardiola, the club and its supporters during a period that transformed City into one of Europe’s dominant football powers.

Throughout the evening, tributes focused not only on trophies and achievements but also on Guardiola’s influence on the club’s identity. Supporters celebrated a tenure that delivered sustained domestic and European success while reshaping the team’s style of play and global reputation.

The event concluded with Guardiola addressing those in attendance. After an evening filled with tributes, music, celebrations and memories from his years at the club, the departing manager ended his remarks with a brief message to supporters.“Thank you so much,” Guardiola said.

Those four words brought the celebration to a close, marking the end of an era that has left a lasting imprint on Manchester City and English football.

“As Sunderland’s captain I can promise you this is just the beginning. We want more.” Sunderland’s return to the European

“As Sunderland’s captain I can promise you this is just the beginning. We want more.”

Sunderland’s return to the European stage has been driven by a combination of targeted recruitment, managerial stability and a unified structure that club officials believe can sustain progress beyond a single successful season.

The club’s seventh-place finish exceeded expectations established before the campaign and marked a significant milestone in the project led by head coach Régis Le Bris. After arriving with limited public attention and little fanfare, the Frenchman has overseen a transformation that has re-established Sunderland as a competitive force within English football.

A key factor behind the club’s progress was an aggressive recruitment strategy backed by substantial investment during the previous summer transfer window. Sunderland spent approximately £155 million strengthening multiple areas of the squad, bringing in players including Robin Roefs, Noah Sadiki, Habib Diarra, Omar Alderete, Reinildo Mandava, Chemsdine Talbi and Brian Brobbey.

The investment delivered immediate results. Sunderland achieved Le Bris’s pre-season objective of reaching the 40-point mark by early March following a victory at Leeds United, ensuring top-flight security well before the end of the campaign. The club ultimately surpassed those expectations by securing seventh place and qualification for European competition.

Leadership within the dressing room also played an important role in the team’s development. Club captain Granit Xhaka emerged as a central figure both on and off the pitch. Beyond his performances, Xhaka helped influence recruitment decisions and strengthen the squad’s leadership structure.

One notable example involved the signing of former Paris Saint-Germain defender Nordi Mukiele. Mukiele and Xhaka had previously played together at Bayer Leverkusen, and their existing relationship helped facilitate the move to Sunderland.Reflecting on Xhaka’s influence, Mukiele acknowledged the midfielder’s role in convincing him to join the project, remarking that when Xhaka speaks, people listen closely.

The signing proved significant as Sunderland assembled a squad capable of competing at a higher level than many observers anticipated before the season began.Off the field, Sunderland also underwent structural changes within its executive leadership.

In February, sporting director Kristjaan Speakman departed after the arrival of Florent Ghisolfi altered the club’s organizational framework.Although Speakman’s exit was described as amicable, it reflected broader adjustments within Sunderland’s hierarchy. Several other senior figures subsequently left the club, leading to speculation regarding the future of Le Bris and whether further changes could affect the football department.

Those concerns ultimately proved unfounded. Rather than weakening the manager’s position, sources around the club viewed Le Bris as having strengthened his influence through the creation of an extensive support structure.

Arriving without a large group of trusted assistants or long-standing collaborators, the coach gradually built relationships throughout the organization and established a network that insiders regard as among the strongest in the Premier League. That foundation is now expected to be tested as Sunderland prepares for the additional demands of European competition.

Participation in continental tournaments will introduce a more congested fixture schedule, requiring greater squad depth and careful management of player workloads. The challenge extends beyond the physical demands of Thursday-night European fixtures. Maintaining dressing-room unity, preserving performance standards and managing heightened expectations will be critical as Sunderland seeks to consolidate rather than merely celebrate its recent achievements.

Those who have worked closely with Le Bris describe a management style built on professionalism, composure and strong interpersonal skills. While publicly known for his calm demeanor, the French coach is also regarded internally as capable of making difficult decisions when required. That balance has helped establish credibility throughout the squad while maintaining the collective culture that underpinned Sunderland’s success this season.

Club officials believe preserving that culture will be essential as the organization enters a new phase of development. For Xhaka, the progress achieved this season represents only an initial step. The captain has repeatedly emphasized the ambition within the dressing room and has framed European qualification not as a final objective but as evidence that Sunderland can compete consistently at a higher level.

Le Bris has adopted a more measured approach. While expressing pride in the club’s accomplishments, he has stressed the importance of remaining realistic about the challenges ahead. The manager has frequently pointed to what he describes as the inherent fragility of football success, arguing that sustained progress requires constant adaptation and discipline.

At the same time, Le Bris has highlighted the bond between the club and its supporters as a central component of Sunderland’s resurgence. Throughout the season, strong fan engagement and a shared sense of purpose between players, staff and supporters helped reinforce belief in the project.

For a manager who arrived on Wearside with little public recognition and spent his first weeks largely unnoticed outside the club environment, the transformation has been striking. Success on the pitch, growing support in the stands and qualification for European competition have elevated both his profile and Sunderland’s ambitions.

As preparations begin for a campaign that will include domestic and continental competition, Sunderland faces the challenge of turning an unexpected breakthrough into a sustainable model for long-term growth.

The club enters that next phase with renewed confidence, substantial investment already bearing fruit and a leadership group determined to build on what has become one of the most notable success stories of the season.
