The U.S. State Department said on Friday it was taking action to dismantle what it described as a sophisticated network that used deception and intermediary companies to obtain advanced equipment for Iran’s defense sector in violation of American sanctions.

According to State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott, the network allegedly defrauded dozens of U.S. technology firms and secured millions of dollars’ worth of equipment, including spectrum analyzers and security detection devices with potential military applications.

U.S. officials said the operation relied on fraudulent websites designed to resemble legitimate American companies. The network allegedly used intermediaries in Dubai to receive shipments before transferring the equipment to Iran, circumventing existing sanctions restrictions.

The State Department identified Ali Majd Sepehr as the individual leading the network. Officials did not disclose the names of the affected American companies or provide details on the quantity of technology allegedly transferred.

The sanctions announcement comes as Washington increases efforts to disrupt financial and logistical channels linked to Iran’s military establishment. On Thursday, the State Department offered a reward of up to $15 million for information leading to the disruption of financial mechanisms associated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and its affiliated branches.

The move also coincides with high-stakes diplomatic discussions between Washington and Tehran aimed at ending the conflict that began earlier this year. The White House said on Friday that President Donald Trump would approve an agreement only if it fully satisfies U.S. requirements, underscoring uncertainty surrounding the negotiations.

The latest sanctions signal that the United States intends to maintain economic and legal pressure on Iran’s defense procurement networks even as diplomatic efforts continue.

In a post on social media, Trump said U.S. naval forces would block “any and all ships” attempting to enter or leave the waterway, which carries roughly 20% of global oil supplies and is central to international energy markets.

He added that the Navy had been instructed to “seek and interdict every vessel in international waters” that had paid a toll to Iran, describing such payments as illegal and warning that affected ships would not be granted safe passage.

The announcement came shortly after U.S. officials ended negotiations with Iran in Pakistan without reaching an agreement, prompting Washington to escalate efforts to curtail Tehran’s economic leverage derived from control over the strategic shipping lane.

Trump said Iran’s nuclear ambitions remained a key obstacle to resolving the conflict and signaled readiness for further military action. “At an appropriate moment, we are fully ‘locked and loaded,’” he wrote, adding that U.S. forces would “finish” the remaining aspects of the war.

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical chokepoint for global energy supplies, and any disruption to shipping through the narrow passage has the potential to impact oil prices and international trade flows.

No immediate response from Iranian authorities was reported.

Education Minister A.N.M. Ehsanul Hoque Milon said the proposal is under active review following discussions with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, as authorities look to reduce fuel consumption while maintaining academic continuity.

The plan would introduce a mixed system combining online and in-person classes, initially for schools, with discussions ongoing on extending it to colleges. Universities may adopt separate arrangements, the minister said.

Officials cited a recent survey indicating that about 55% of students and guardians support a hybrid model, though concerns remain that fully online learning could increase social isolation.

Bangladesh’s move comes as rising global oil prices, driven by instability in the Middle East, strain domestic fuel supplies. The country relies on imports for around 95% of its energy needs, leaving it vulnerable to external shocks.

Authorities have already introduced measures to manage shortages, including fuel rationing, limits on vehicle fuel sales and reduced operating hours for fuel stations amid reports of panic buying and hoarding.

The government is also evaluating additional steps such as expanding remote work for offices and adjusting weekly holidays to reduce overall energy consumption.

Officials said Bangladesh is seeking more than $2.5 billion in external financing to support imports of fuel and liquefied natural gas, as pressure mounts on foreign exchange reserves.
