Officials in Russia’s Belgorod region said a Ukrainian drone struck a vehicle in the town of Graivoron, killing one civilian. The attack was among the latest incidents affecting Russian territories bordering Ukraine, which have increasingly come under drone and artillery fire during the war.

In the neighboring Bryansk region, acting Governor Yegor Kovalchuk said a man was killed in a Ukrainian strike on the settlement of Belaya Beryozka. Local authorities did not immediately provide additional details regarding the circumstances of the attack.

Ukraine has frequently targeted military and infrastructure-related sites inside Russia, describing such operations as a response to sustained Russian bombardments of Ukrainian cities and regions since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022.

The latest fatalities came a day after intense Russian attacks across Ukraine. Ukrainian authorities reported that at least four people were killed and more than 100 injured during overnight strikes from Saturday into Sunday, with the capital Kyiv among the areas affected.

Kyiv and Moscow both reported that Russia employed its nuclear-capable Oreshnik ballistic missile during the latest wave of attacks, marking another escalation in the use of advanced weaponry in the conflict.

The Russian strikes followed a Ukrainian drone attack on educational facilities in the Russian-occupied eastern Ukrainian region of Luhansk, where authorities reported 21 deaths and more than 40 injuries.

The conflict, now in its fifth year, remains Europe’s deadliest war since World War II. Diplomatic efforts led by the United States to broker a settlement have made little progress in recent months, with negotiations largely stalled following the outbreak of conflict in the Middle East and the resulting shift in international diplomatic priorities.

Governor Vyacheslav Fedorishchev said two apartment blocks were hit in the attack, leading to a partial collapse of one building entrance. The victims were later pulled from the rubble during rescue operations.“Two people an adult woman and a child have died in Syzran following an attack by an enemy drone,” Fedorishchev said in a statement, describing the incident as a crime against civilians.

Russia’s Emergency Ministry, cited by domestic news agencies, said rescue efforts had been completed and that no additional victims were believed to be trapped under the debris. No further casualty details were provided.

There was no immediate response from Ukraine. Both Kyiv and Moscow have consistently denied deliberately targeting civilian populations since the start of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

The strike comes as Ukraine has intensified attacks on Russian infrastructure in recent months, particularly energy-related sites, while U.S.-mediated peace talks remain on hold and Washington’s attention is partly focused on escalating tensions in the Middle East.

Syzran, located roughly 1,000 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, is home to a major oil refinery, underscoring its strategic importance within Russia’s energy network.

The ministry said in a post on X that the strike targeted infrastructure linked to electricity generation and water desalination, without providing further details on the timing or scale of the attack.

Authorities said the assault caused damage to a service building within the plant complex, though the extent of disruption to power and water output was not immediately clear.

No additional casualties were reported in the initial statement.

The incident comes amid escalating hostilities involving Iran and its regional adversaries, with attacks increasingly affecting critical infrastructure across the Gulf.

Kuwait, a key energy producer, has not been a primary battlefield but remains vulnerable due to its strategic facilities.

Officials did not provide further operational details or attribute responsibility beyond identifying the attack as Iranian.

In a statement, the army identified the soldier as Sergeant Moshe Yitzchak hacohen Katz, 22, a member of the Paratroopers Brigade’s 890th Battalion, originally from New Haven, Connecticut.

The military said the soldier “fell during combat in southern Lebanon,” without providing further operational details.

The latest casualty comes amid ongoing cross-border exchanges between Israeli forces and Hezbollah, which began launching rocket attacks on March 2. The group said the strikes were in retaliation for the killing of Ali Khamenei, an event that has heightened regional tensions.

Since the escalation began, at least five Israeli soldiers have been killed in combat operations along the northern front, according to military figures.The fighting forms part of a broader escalation involving Israel and Iran-aligned groups across the region, raising concerns of a wider conflict.

Exchanges of fire along the Israel-Lebanon border have intensified, with both sides reporting casualties and continued military activity.

Israel has not disclosed further details regarding the circumstances of the latest incident, and there was no immediate comment from Hezbollah.

In a statement carried by the Saudi Press Agency, the ministry said the targeting of Saudi sovereignty, civilian infrastructure, diplomatic missions and economic interests constituted a breach of international norms. It added that the actions violated the Beijing Agreement and United Nations Security Council Resolution 2817 (2026), as well as principles governing state sovereignty and good neighborly relations.

Saudi authorities notified the Iranian embassy that its military attaché, assistant military attaché and three additional staff members had been declared persona non grata and must leave the Kingdom within 24 hours, according to the statement.

The ministry reiterated a previous warning issued on March 9 that continued attacks would represent further escalation and have a “profound impact” on bilateral relations. It also restated the Kingdom’s “categorical condemnation” of Iranian actions against Saudi Arabia, Gulf Cooperation Council states and other Arab and Islamic countries.

Saudi Arabia said it would take all necessary measures to safeguard its security and sovereignty, invoking its right to self-defense under Article 51 of the U.N. Charter. The statement framed the expulsions as part of a broader response to what it described as repeated violations affecting civilian and strategic targets.
