More than 1,000 days into the conflict in Sudan, large-scale displacement and the collapse of essential services continue to shape one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises, with local communities playing a critical role in supporting affected populations.

According to humanitarian reporting, at least 9.5 million people have been displaced across the country, while more than half of the population now relies on aid to meet basic needs. The scale of the crisis has made Sudan the largest displacement emergency affecting children globally, with widespread implications for health, nutrition, and education systems.

In the city of Al Fasher, located in the Darfur region, intensified violence and deteriorating living conditions have forced families to flee toward relatively safer areas, including Tawila, Golo, and Rokero. Many displaced individuals arrive after prolonged journeys under limited access to food, water, and medical care, contributing to high levels of malnutrition and physical exhaustion.

Amid these conditions, humanitarian operations led by UNICEF and partner organizations are being supplemented by local efforts from displaced individuals themselves, particularly women who have taken on frontline roles in health care, education, and psychosocial support.

Fadeela, a nutritionist based in Golo, is among those providing direct assistance to displaced families. She travels daily to a health and nutrition facility, where she delivers counselling and support to mothers and children affected by malnutrition. She reported that many of the women arriving at the facility are in a state of physical exhaustion and psychological distress. Despite her own displacement, she continues to provide services, citing a sense of shared experience with those she assists.

In Rokero, Alawiya, a teacher and mother of four, has resumed teaching activities despite living in displacement conditions. After fleeing violence in Al Fasher, her family initially lived without shelter before relocating to a school building, where she now conducts classes during the day and remains overnight. She emphasized the role of education in recovery, stating that access to schooling is essential for rebuilding individual and community stability.

Community-based education initiatives have emerged as a key response in areas where formal systems have been disrupted. With infrastructure damaged or repurposed for shelter, informal teaching arrangements are enabling continuity of learning, although under constrained conditions.

In Tawila, Latifa, who has experienced multiple displacements, is working at a safe learning space supported by humanitarian partners. The facility provides structured activities and support for children exposed to conflict-related trauma. According to her account, children attending the space often show visible changes in behavior after participation, including improved engagement and reduced signs of distress.

She noted that many of the children have experienced violence at a young age and require consistent support to regain a sense of normalcy.Health services in displacement areas are also being maintained through local initiatives.

Amina, a midwife working in the region, described the conditions faced by families arriving at health facilities. She reported cases of extreme hardship during displacement journeys, including child mortality and the loss of family members. At the facility, she provides antenatal and postnatal care, supports childbirth, and conducts nutrition awareness sessions. She indicated that many women arrive without basic supplies, including clothing or blankets for newborns, increasing health risks.

Amina also highlighted concerns regarding conditions in displacement camps, particularly overcrowding and exposure to cold weather, which pose additional risks to infants and mothers. Despite these challenges, she continues her work while managing her own family responsibilities in an uncertain environment.Psychosocial support services are another critical component of the response.

Mahla, a social worker operating in a safe space for women and girls, provides individual and group counselling to those affected by the conflict. She described the journey to displacement as involving prolonged exposure to harsh environmental conditions, including lack of food, water, and shelter. In the safe space, women and girls are offered structured support aimed at addressing trauma and fostering mutual assistance.

Mahla indicated that such spaces serve as points of stability where displaced individuals can access both emotional support and a sense of security. She emphasized the importance of collective coping mechanisms, noting that participants often rely on shared experiences to support one another.The accounts from these individuals reflect a broader trend in which displaced communities are contributing directly to humanitarian response efforts, often in the absence of fully functional state services.

Their involvement spans multiple sectors, including nutrition, health care, education, and psychosocial support, highlighting the role of community-based initiatives in sustaining essential services during protracted crises.Humanitarian agencies continue to operate in the region, providing assistance such as medical treatment, counselling, and emergency supplies. However, access constraints, security challenges, and the scale of displacement have limited the reach of formal interventions, increasing reliance on local networks.

The situation in Darfur underscores the prolonged nature of the conflict and its impact on civilian populations. With millions displaced and basic services disrupted, the integration of community-led support with institutional aid remains a central feature of the response.As displacement continues, the ability of affected populations to sustain these efforts will depend on both external support and improvements in security conditions.

Current assessments indicate that needs remain high across all sectors, particularly for children, who represent a significant proportion of those affected by the crisis.

The statement, submitted by Indonesia’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Umar Hadi, called for strengthened protection measures for peacekeeping forces amid escalating security risks. It also urged an end to violence and a return to negotiations to secure a peaceful resolution in Lebanon.

Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry said the safety of UN personnel was “non-negotiable,” stressing the need for the Security Council to use all available mechanisms to safeguard troops deployed in volatile environments.

The appeal follows a series of explosions in southern Lebanon in late March that killed three Indonesian peacekeepers serving under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon and wounded several others, including personnel from France, Ghana, Nepal and Poland.

A separate blast inside a UN facility less than a week later injured three more Indonesian soldiers.The incidents prompted Jakarta to demand accountability and enhanced security guarantees for peacekeeping missions.

The Foreign Ministry described the attacks as “unacceptable” and called for an urgent meeting of troop-contributing countries to review safety protocols and operational conditions within UNIFIL.

President Prabowo Subianto condemned the attacks, saying such acts undermine peace efforts and result in the loss of lives of Indonesian personnel deployed abroad.

The UNIFIL mission, established to monitor hostilities and support stability in southern Lebanon, operates in a region that has seen renewed tensions in recent weeks, raising concerns over the safety of international peacekeepers.

The raids, carried out by criminal groups locally known as bandits, targeted villages in Sokoto State on Thursday, following several days of deadly assaults in the country’s predominantly Muslim north.

Ahmad Yahaya, a community leader in Dan Adua village, said at least 12 people were killed and 43 abducted across Isa and Sabon Birni local government areas during the attacks. He said heavily armed gunmen carried out the raids.

Lawmaker Muhammad Saidu Bargaja, who represents the affected areas, confirmed the violence, reporting similar casualty figures and describing the security situation as “highly devastating.”

The districts are believed to be under the influence of Bello Turji, a notorious gang leader whose network imposes levies on communities and conducts retaliatory raids against those who refuse to comply.

The latest violence comes amid a wider escalation of attacks by both criminal gangs and jihadist groups. Earlier in the week, a senior military officer, Brigadier General Oseni Omoh Braimah, was killed along with several troops during an overnight assault on a military base in northeastern Nigeria, according to local officials and intelligence sources.

Separate attacks in the northwestern states of Kebbi and Niger have also left at least 90 people dead since Sunday, based on figures from local authorities, humanitarian groups and church sources.

The surge underscores ongoing security challenges in northern Nigeria, where armed groups continue to target civilians, security forces and infrastructure despite military operations aimed at curbing the violence.

In a written statement broadcast on Hezbollah’s Al-Manar television, Qassem said the group would not accept a return to prior arrangements and called on Lebanese officials to take a firmer stance in upcoming talks.

His remarks followed Israeli strikes earlier this week that he described as “bloody criminality,” referring to attacks on Wednesday that reportedly killed more than 300 people in Lebanon.

The comments come as Beirut and Tel Aviv are preparing to begin negotiations in the United States, part of ongoing diplomatic efforts to address escalating tensions between the two countries.

GCC Secretary General Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi said the Lebanese move to direct the army and security forces to enforce state authority and restrict weapons to official institutions marked a “significant step” toward strengthening sovereignty and stability. The decision aims to consolidate control in the capital and limit arms possession to legitimate state forces.

Albudaiwi reaffirmed the GCC’s support for Lebanon’s sovereignty, security and territorial integrity, stating that the measure could help enhance stability and safeguard citizens.

Separately, India’s foreign ministry said it was “deeply concerned” by reports of civilian casualties following heavy Israeli bombardment earlier this week, which killed more than 300 people according to reports.

New Delhi stressed that protecting civilians must remain a priority and called for adherence to international law, including respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The escalation comes amid ongoing conflict involving Israel and Hezbollah, which has drawn in broader regional tensions linked to the U.S.-Israel confrontation with Iran.

Israeli operations in Lebanon have added strain to a fragile two-week ceasefire between Washington and Tehran, with both sides preparing for negotiations in Islamabad aimed at easing tensions.

The Humanitarian Research Lab (HRL) said its analysis of satellite imagery and open-source data showed activity “consistent with military assistance” to the RSF at a base in Asosa, in Ethiopia’s Benishangul-Gumuz region, between late December 2025 and late March 2026.The RSF has been engaged in a conflict with Sudan’s army since April 2023.

Sudan’s military had previously accused Ethiopia of allowing drone attacks to be launched from its territory, an allegation Addis Ababa has denied, along with claims it hosts RSF camps.

According to the HRL report, researchers identified repeated arrivals of commercial car carriers at the Asosa base unloading “technicals,” light pickup trucks commonly used by armed groups.

These vehicles were later observed supplying RSF units operating in Sudan’s Blue Nile state.The report said some vehicles were subsequently fitted with mounts capable of carrying heavy machine guns, while objects consistent with .50-calibre weapons were also detected nearby.

Similar vehicles later appeared in open-source imagery from fighting around Al-Kurmuk, a strategic border town approximately 100 km from Asosa.HRL also documented increased logistical activity at the base, including the arrival of shipping containers, fuel tanks and tents capable of housing up to 150 personnel.

Satellite imagery showed expansion at Asosa airport, including a new hangar, concrete pad and defensive positions. The site had previously been used as a drone base.

The findings come as fighting intensifies in Blue Nile state, where an estimated 28,000 people have been displaced this year, including more than 10,000 from Al-Kurmuk alone.

Control of the region remains divided between Sudan’s army and RSF-aligned forces from the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North, led by Abdelaziz al-Hilu.

The strike, which occurred on Wednesday, targeted the Al-Salama neighborhood near a girls’ school, according to the El-Fasher Resistance Committee.

The group attributed the attack to the Sudanese army, which has been engaged in a conflict with the Rapid Support Forces since April 2023.

A medical source said the victims brought to a local hospital included six children, among them three secondary school students.

Sixteen others were wounded in the attack, including women and children, and are receiving treatment.

The strike underscores the continuing toll of the conflict in Sudan’s Darfur region, where fighting between the army and paramilitary forces has displaced large numbers of civilians and strained already limited medical resources.

Speaking in an interview with CNN after the meeting, Rutte said certain NATO members were “tested and failed,” while emphasizing that most European countries fulfilled prior commitments in the crisis.

“Some of them yes, but a large majority of European countries have done what they promised before in a case like this,” Rutte said.

He described his talks with Trump as “frank and open,” noting that the U.S. president had expressed disappointment over the level of involvement from some allies during the conflict.

Rutte said he highlighted to Trump that several European countries had contributed through logistical support and other forms of assistance, even if they were not directly involved in military operations.
