Jerusalem-Israeli airstrikes targeting vehicles along a coastal highway south of Beirut killed eight people, including two children, on Wednesday, Lebanese

Jerusalem-Israeli airstrikes targeting vehicles along a coastal highway south of Beirut killed eight people, including two children, on Wednesday, Lebanese authorities said, in the latest escalation despite an ongoing ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah.

Lebanon’s health ministry said three strikes hit the Saida-South coastal highway in the areas of Barja, Jiyeh and Saadiyat, resulting in eight fatalities. The ministry described the attacks as raids carried out by the “Israeli enemy.”

The Israeli military said it had launched a new wave of strikes against Hezbollah infrastructure across southern Lebanon, hours after issuing evacuation warnings to residents in several villages in the Tyre region.

“The IDF has begun striking Hezbollah terror infrastructure in several areas in southern Lebanon,” the military said in a statement.

Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency reported that Israeli drones targeted two cars on the highway linking Beirut to southern Lebanon, while additional strikes hit vehicles in Saadiyat in the Chouf district and in the southern city of Sidon.

An AFP photographer at the scene near Jiyeh, roughly 20 kilometers south of Beirut, saw a charred vehicle on the roadside as emergency responders carried away a victim’s body.

The latest attacks followed similar strikes in the same area on Saturday and came amid continuing Israeli operations despite a ceasefire that took effect on April 17 to halt fighting with the Iran-backed Hezbollah movement.

On Tuesday, Lebanon’s health ministry said 13 people were killed in separate Israeli strikes on southern towns. The ministry added that at least 380 people had been killed since the truce began.

The Israeli military’s latest evacuation warnings signaled expectations of additional strikes in southern Lebanon, where intermittent hostilities have persisted despite diplomatic efforts to contain the conflict.

The violence comes ahead of a new round of direct negotiations between Lebanon and Israel scheduled to take place in Washington on Thursday under US mediation.
Hezbollah has opposed the talks. The group’s leader, Naim Qassem, warned on Tuesday that Hezbollah would turn the battlefield into “hell” for Israel if attacks continued.
Since Hezbollah entered the broader regional conflict in early March, more than 2,800 people, including around 200 children, have been killed in Lebanon, according to figures released by the Lebanese health ministry.

Jerusalem— The Israeli military on Saturday ordered residents of nine villages in southern Lebanon to evacuate immediately ahead of planned

Jerusalem— The Israeli military on Saturday ordered residents of nine villages in southern Lebanon to evacuate immediately ahead of planned operations against Hezbollah, despite an existing ceasefire aimed at halting cross-border hostilities.

Israeli military spokesman Avichay Adraee said the evacuation order was issued in response to what Israel described as repeated Hezbollah violations of the truce agreement that took effect in mid-April.“In light of the terrorist Hezbollah’s violation of the ceasefire agreement, the IDF is compelled to act against it forcefully,” Adraee said in a statement posted on X.Residents were instructed to leave their homes and move at least 1,000 meters away from the affected villages into open areas for their safety, the statement said.

The warning came as fighting between Israel and the Iran-backed group continued to intensify across southern Lebanon, with both sides exchanging fire almost daily despite the ceasefire arrangement.Earlier Saturday, the Israeli military said it had targeted more than 85 Hezbollah infrastructure sites over the previous 24 hours through aerial and ground operations.

According to the military, the strikes hit weapons storage facilities, missile launchers and structures allegedly used by Hezbollah to conduct attacks against Israeli civilians and soldiers.Israel also said it struck an underground Hezbollah weapons production facility in Lebanon’s Beqaa Valley and targeted militants accused of conducting operations against Israeli troops deployed in southern Lebanon.

On Friday, Hezbollah announced missile and drone attacks against Israeli military bases in retaliation for Israeli strikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs and continued attacks in southern Lebanon.Lebanese authorities said Israeli strikes killed 11 people in southern Lebanon on Friday.

The latest escalation underscores the fragility of the ceasefire reached earlier this year after months of cross-border clashes that expanded alongside the broader regional conflict involving Israel, Iran and allied armed groups.

Israel and Lebanon remain formally at war, although indirect diplomatic efforts backed by international mediators have sought to prevent wider regional escalation.

Beirut— More than half of Lebanon’s population now relies on humanitarian assistance to survive, the European Union’s crisis management chief

Beirut— More than half of Lebanon’s population now relies on humanitarian assistance to survive, the European Union’s crisis management chief said on Friday, warning of worsening conditions as Israeli military strikes continue despite a ceasefire agreement with Hezbollah.

Hadja Lahbib said after talks with Joseph Aoun in Beirut that more than three million people across Lebanon currently depend on aid.“At present, more than three million people, meaning more than half of the population here in Lebanon, depend on humanitarian aid to survive,” Lahbib told reporters.

The comments underscore the growing humanitarian toll of the conflict that erupted on March 2 between Israel and the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah, displacing more than one million people and placing severe strain on Lebanon’s already fragile economy and public services.

According to Lebanese authorities, Israeli strikes since early March have killed more than 2,700 people. Israel has continued military operations in Lebanon despite a ceasefire aimed at halting the two-month war.

Lahbib said the European Union had allocated 100 million euros ($108 million) in assistance since the start of the conflict and dispatched six humanitarian aid flights to Lebanon, with another expected on Saturday.

The United Nations launched an emergency appeal in March seeking $308 million for humanitarian operations in Lebanon. U.N. agencies say only $126 million has been secured so far, leaving critical funding gaps for food, shelter and medical assistance.

Lahbib described the ceasefire as “a narrow window of hope” but said a sustainable peace would require action from both sides. She called on Hezbollah to halt attacks and disarm, while urging Israel to end its bombardment campaign.

“For a ceasefire to lead to peace, courage is needed political courage to address the root causes of this conflict,” Lahbib said.Diplomatic efforts to end the fighting are continuing, with Israel and Lebanon expected to hold a third round of talks in Washington next week despite Hezbollah’s opposition to direct negotiations with Israel.

Beirut- Lebanon’s Hezbollah on Saturday condemned a video aired by Lebanese broadcaster LBCI that portrayed the group’s leaders and fighters

Beirut- Lebanon’s Hezbollah on Saturday condemned a video aired by Lebanese broadcaster LBCI that portrayed the group’s leaders and fighters as characters from the popular “Angry Birds” mobile game, calling it an “offensive and cheap” insult, as the satire triggered a wave of sectarian backlash on social media and prompted President Joseph Aoun to appeal for restraint.

The animated video, published by LBCI on Friday, depicted Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem, a senior Shiite cleric, addressing fighters represented as birds battling the Israeli army, which was shown as the game’s green pigs.

The clip quickly drew anger from Hezbollah supporters, many of whom accused the broadcaster of mocking both the group and Qassem’s religious standing. Some supporters responded by posting insulting messages and images targeting Maronite Patriarch Beshara Rai, the highest Christian religious authority in Lebanon.

In a statement, Hezbollah said the video crossed acceptable political boundaries and amounted to “offensive and cheap insults that degrade political discourse to a repulsive level.”The group also urged its supporters not to be “drawn into” what it described as a controversy being “orchestrated by the enemies of the resistance,” signaling an effort to contain the fallout as criticism widened across Lebanon’s already fragile sectarian landscape.

LBCI, founded in the 1980s by the Lebanese Forces, a Christian political party historically opposed to Hezbollah, has in recent years sought to distance itself from partisan affiliations and present itself as an independent broadcaster.

The backlash underscored the sensitivity surrounding political satire in Lebanon, where media outlets, artists and comedians have periodically faced public pressure and legal scrutiny over content seen as offensive to religious or political figures despite the country’s relatively broad space for free expression compared with much of the Arab world.

“Before our holy symbols and our sheikh, all holy symbols fall,” one Hezbollah supporter wrote on X, referring to Patriarch Rai, reflecting the increasingly hostile rhetoric that followed the broadcast.Following the online attacks against Rai, several political and religious officials contacted the patriarch to express solidarity and condemn the sectarian tone of the exchanges.

President Joseph Aoun said in a statement on Saturday that he “condemned and rejected any attacks on the heads of Christian and Muslim religious communities and spiritual figures in Lebanon.”He urged citizens “to refrain from personal insults,” warning of the “negative repercussions” of such rhetoric at a time when Lebanon requires broader national solidarity amid deep political and economic strain.

The dispute comes as Hezbollah remains under intense scrutiny over its military confrontation with Israel. The group entered the regional conflict on March 2 after firing rockets toward Israel in support of its ally Iran, drawing Lebanon deeper into escalating regional hostilities.

Since then, more than 2,600 people have been killed in Israeli attacks, according to Lebanese authorities, despite a fragile truce that took effect on April 17 and has yet to fully halt violence along the border.

The episode highlights how political satire, sectarian identity and regional conflict continue to intersect sharply in Lebanon, where symbolic disputes can quickly evolve into broader national tensions.

Beirut — Israel’s military on Sunday ordered residents in parts of southern Lebanon to evacuate their homes and move at least 1,000 meters away from suspected Hezbollah positions, after carrying out widespread strikes a day earlier that it said targeted dozens of Hezbollah military sites despite a fragile ceasefire still formally in place.

The Israeli army said it was conducting operations against Hezbollah following what it described as violations of the ceasefire agreement and warned civilians that anyone near Hezbollah fighters or facilities could be at risk.

In a statement, the military said it had dismantled “approximately 70 military structures and approximately 50 Hezbollah infrastructure sites” across several areas in southern Lebanon on Saturday.

The strikes marked one of the heaviest waves of Israeli attacks since the April 17 ceasefire, which was intended to halt more than six weeks of direct confrontation between Israel and the Iran-backed Lebanese armed group.

Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency reported multiple Israeli strikes across the south, including attacks in the Tyre district town of Sammaiyeh where at least three people were killed.Earlier, the Israeli military had issued two evacuation warnings covering nine southern villages, signaling broader operational activity near the border.

Hezbollah said it had launched several attacks targeting Israeli troops in response to what it called repeated Israeli ceasefire violations, underscoring the continuing volatility despite formal truce arrangements.Under the ceasefire text, Israel retains the right to act against what it describes as “planned, imminent or ongoing attacks,” a provision that has remained a major source of dispute between both sides.

Israeli strikes have become a near-daily occurrence since Hezbollah entered the regional conflict on March 2 by firing rockets toward Israel in support of its ally Iran, drawing Lebanon deeper into the broader Middle East war.

Since then, more than 2,600 people have been killed in Lebanon and over one million displaced, according to Lebanese authorities, with much of the destruction concentrated in the south and Beirut’s southern suburbs.

Lebanese officials continue to argue that repeated Israeli strikes undermine the ceasefire and risk pushing the conflict back toward full-scale war.In a parallel diplomatic effort, Lebanese army chief General Rodolphe Haykal met on Saturday with visiting U.S. General Joseph Clearfield, who heads the five-member committee tasked with monitoring the separate 2024 ceasefire framework established after the last major Israel-Hezbollah war.

According to a Lebanese army statement, the two discussed Lebanon’s security situation, broader regional developments and ways to improve the effectiveness of the monitoring mechanism. The committee remains central to efforts by the United States and regional actors to prevent further escalation as violence tied to the wider Iran-Israel confrontation continues to spill across multiple fronts.

Beirut — The United States on Thursday urged a direct meeting between Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Israeli Prime Minister

Beirut — The United States on Thursday urged a direct meeting between Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon killed at least 17 people despite an ongoing ceasefire, deepening tensions over efforts to launch formal negotiations between the two countries.

The appeal came as Washington sought to advance direct diplomacy following two rounds of Lebanese-Israeli talks held this month in Washington, the first such high-level contacts in decades, after cross-border fighting involving Iran-backed Hezbollah escalated into a wider regional conflict in March.

President Donald Trump had announced a 10-day ceasefire beginning on April 17, later extending it by three weeks after the second round of discussions. He has said he hopes to host Aoun and Netanyahu “over the next couple of weeks” as both sides prepare for direct negotiations.

In a statement, the U.S. Embassy in Beirut said Lebanon faced a decisive moment and called for leadership from Beirut to move toward a broader political settlement.

“Lebanon stands at a crossroads. Its people have a historic opportunity to reclaim their country and shape their future as a truly sovereign, independent nation,” the embassy said.

It added that a direct meeting between Aoun and Netanyahu, facilitated by Trump, could secure guarantees on sovereignty, territorial integrity, border security, reconstruction support and the restoration of Lebanese state authority across all its territory.

The proposal has exposed divisions inside Lebanon, where Hezbollah has rejected direct negotiations with Israel and opposed Beirut’s previous commitment to disarm the group, a longstanding demand from Western governments and Israel.

Aoun said on Wednesday that Israel must first fully implement the ceasefire before negotiations could meaningfully proceed.“Israeli attacks cannot continue as they are,” he said, adding that Lebanon was waiting for the United States to set a date for the start of direct negotiations.

Israeli forces have continued military operations despite the truce, maintaining troop activity inside what officials describe as a “Yellow Line,” a zone extending roughly 10 km into southern Lebanon along the border.Lebanon’s health ministry said Israeli strikes on Thursday killed at least 17 people in the south, including five women and two children.

The Lebanese army said a separate strike killed one of its soldiers.Israel’s military also said one of its soldiers had been killed in southern Lebanon.

Aoun on Thursday condemned what he called Israel’s “continuing violations” of the ceasefire, citing airstrikes, demolitions of homes and places of worship, and attacks on civilians and emergency personnel.

Speaking to a delegation from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, he called for international pressure on Israel to halt attacks on civilians, paramedics, civil defense teams and humanitarian workers.

Three Lebanese civil defense personnel killed in Israeli strikes were buried on Thursday.Lebanon’s state news agency NNA reported multiple Israeli airstrikes across the south, while an Israeli military spokesperson issued evacuation warnings for more than 20 villages near the border.

Hezbollah said it carried out 10 attacks on Israeli military targets in southern Lebanon, including strikes on tanks and troop positions. In Beirut, dozens of residents from southern Lebanon and local officials gathered to protest what they described as the continued destruction of villages despite the ceasefire.

“We will not surrender and will not normalize,” protester Hanaa Ibrahim, 48, told AFP.The ceasefire text published by the U.S. State Department states that Israel retains the right to act against “planned, imminent or ongoing attacks,” language Hezbollah says was never formally presented to Lebanon’s cabinet.

Aoun said on Wednesday that the wording matched the November 2024 ceasefire agreement that ended the previous war and that all parties had accepted it at the time.

Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, a Hezbollah ally, rejected that account, calling Aoun’s remarks “inaccurate, to say the least,” and disputing that the same terms had been accepted in the earlier agreement.

Beirut– Saudi Arabia’s ambassador to Lebanon, Walid Bukhari, said adherence to the 1989 Taif Agreement remains the foundation of any political settlement in Lebanon, stressing the need to preserve civil peace and strengthen state institutions amid continuing regional tensions.

Bukhari made the remarks during meetings in Beirut with Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul Latif Derian, Deputy Head of the Higher Islamic Shiite Council Sheikh Ali Al-Khatib, and Druze spiritual leader Sheikh Sami Abi Al-Muna, as Saudi Arabia continues diplomatic engagement over Lebanon’s political and security crisis.

During his meeting with Derian, Bukhari said Riyadh remained committed to Lebanon’s unity and was working diplomatically to support solutions that reinforce security, stability and prosperity while backing Lebanese state institutions.

He said the Taif Accord, which ended Lebanon’s 1975-1990 civil war and restructured the country’s political system, remained the backbone of any sustainable national settlement.

Derian praised Saudi Arabia’s role in supporting Lebanon’s stability under what he described as exceptional circumstances and said rebuilding the Lebanese state was the only path toward national recovery.

He called for restoring state authority across all Lebanese territory, limiting weapons to the Lebanese army and reaffirming commitment to the Taif Agreement while strengthening national unity.

Derian also welcomed diplomatic efforts by President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, supported by Arab and international partners, to end the war in Lebanon and secure a broader political settlement.

In a separate meeting with Al-Khatib, Bukhari expressed optimism about Lebanon’s future and said preserving civil peace required agreement among the country’s three top leaders on a shared national path.He praised Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri for what he described as wisdom and experience during critical political moments.

Bukhari also recalled late former parliament speaker Hussein Husseini, often regarded as a principal architect of the Taif Agreement, citing his well-known remark that “the alternative to Taif is implementing Taif.”

Al-Khatib said Saudi Arabia played an important role in maintaining civil peace in Lebanon and stressed that his side did not seek a separate political project. He added that Arab and Islamic states needed greater coordination to confront regional instability and said Saudi Arabia was central to any broader effort to strengthen regional cooperation while respecting national sovereignty.

Bukhari later met Abi Al-Muna to discuss continuing military operations in the region, efforts to stop the war in Lebanon, and Saudi diplomatic initiatives aimed at helping the country navigate its political and economic crisis.

The talks also covered the recent visit to Lebanon by Saudi Foreign Ministry adviser Yazid bin Farhan and broader efforts to preserve national unity and avoid further escalation.

Beirut– Lebanese authorities have detained former Palestinian ambassador to Lebanon Ashraf Dabbour on corruption charges after he arrived at Beirut’s Rafik Hariri International Airport, judicial and security officials said on Wednesday.

Officials said Dabbour was arrested late Tuesday shortly after landing in Beirut and is being questioned by a judge at the prosecutor’s office in the Lebanese capital. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief the media.According to the officials, the detention was carried out based on a Red Notice issued by Interpol late last year following accusations linked to financial misconduct.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas removed Dabbour from his post as ambassador to Lebanon in 2025 after the Palestinian Authority accused him of corruption.Officials said the case involves allegations that Dabbour was involved in the sale of property in Lebanon owned by the Palestine Liberation Organization, which maintained a major presence in the country before Israel’s 1982 invasion of Lebanon forced its leadership to relocate.

The properties were reportedly linked to assets held by the PLO during its years of political and military operations from Lebanon. No public statement has been issued by Dabbour or his legal representatives regarding the allegations.

The case comes amid broader anti-corruption efforts within Palestinian institutions and renewed scrutiny over financial management tied to overseas diplomatic and political assets.

Beirut— Nearly two months after renewed fighting between Israel and Hezbollah forced them from their homes, many displaced Lebanese families

Beirut— Nearly two months after renewed fighting between Israel and Hezbollah forced them from their homes, many displaced Lebanese families remain trapped in worsening conditions, unable to return to southern towns still under bombardment and military occupation despite a U.S.-brokered ceasefire.

Among them is Rabih Khreiss, a 45-year-old mechanic and father of nine from the southern town of Khiyam, who now lives in a makeshift tent on Beirut’s waterfront after fleeing with his family in the early hours of March 2, when Hezbollah launched attacks into Israel and Israeli retaliatory strikes began almost immediately.

Khreiss, who once supported his family through a car repair workshop in southern Lebanon, now relies on donations for survival and says the uncertainty has left him feeling trapped.“I feel like my children and I are prisoners in a room, sentenced to life imprisonment,” he said.

“But when will relief come so we can get out of this life sentence? No one knows.”His family now lives in a fragile shelter built from wooden beams and plastic tarps that shake in the wind. Without showers, they bathe in plastic tubs and wash clothes by hand. His older sister, who is living with them, is battling cancer and struggles to access medical care.

“We’re living in tents, not knowing where these days will take us,” he said. “We start thinking, if only we could wake up and win the lottery so we could get out of this mess.”Although a ceasefire brokered by the United States was intended to reduce hostilities, Israeli forces have continued airstrikes and maintained troops in a strip of southern Lebanon, where they say Hezbollah infrastructure remains active.

That includes near-daily controlled demolitions in Khiyam, a town once home to around 10,000 residents and now described by locals as almost entirely flattened and deserted.Hezbollah has also continued attacks against Israeli forces inside Lebanon and on northern Israel, while both sides accuse each other of violating the ceasefire terms.

The prolonged conflict has deepened despair among Lebanon’s estimated 1.2 million displaced people, many of whom had hoped the truce would allow them to return home but now face indefinite displacement.“Khiyam is my town, my region, my land, my home, my work, my people, my loved ones, everything,” Khreiss said. “Of course, all my memories are in Khiyam.

I miss everything about it.”The family has already endured repeated cycles of conflict. During the previous Hezbollah-Israel war in 2024, one of Khreiss’s older sons lost an eye when an Israeli strike hit their home in Khiyam.Khreiss said he pulled his children from the rubble with his own hands and felt he had aged “years” in a single hour.

His garage was also damaged during that war, but he rebuilt and returned. This time, he does not know whether either his workshop or his home still stands. With no steady income and rising anxiety over his children’s future, he says he is considering selling his car if he cannot find work soon.

“It’s showing in my children that they’ve never known joy or happiness, never been to an amusement park, never had fun like other children,” he said.“I brought them into this world, and I have to take responsibility for them and secure their future.

But circumstances have forced me to do nothing for them. There’s nothing I can do.”

Beirut— The head of the United Nations peacekeeping mission in Lebanon led a tribute on Monday to a French soldier

Beirut— The head of the United Nations peacekeeping mission in Lebanon led a tribute on Monday to a French soldier killed in a shooting incident in the country’s south, calling for a full investigation as concerns grow over the safety of international forces in the region.

Major General Diodato Abagnara, commander of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), paid tribute to Florian Montorio during a ceremony at Beirut airport ahead of the repatriation of his remains to France.Montorio, 39, was killed on Sunday when a UNIFIL patrol clearing explosive ordnance came under small-arms fire near Ghanduriyah in southern Lebanon.

Three other peacekeepers were wounded, including two seriously, according to UNIFIL.“We are here to honour you,” Abagnara said during the ceremony, praising the soldier’s service and sacrifice and emphasizing that his contribution would endure through the mission’s ongoing work.

UNIFIL said the patrol had been attempting to restore access to isolated positions when it was targeted by what it described as non-state actors. The group Hezbollah has been alleged to be involved. The mission has launched an internal investigation and urged Lebanese authorities to identify and prosecute those responsible.

The ceremony was attended by senior officials including France’s ambassador to Lebanon, Hervé Magro, and UNIFIL Chief of Staff Paul Sanzey, who highlighted France’s longstanding role in the peacekeeping mission.

France has been a key contributor to UNIFIL since its establishment in 1978, deploying troops for patrols, demining operations and support to Lebanese armed forces in the volatile south region.Montorio was posthumously awarded UN and Lebanese Army medals in recognition of his service.

He is survived by his wife and two daughters. The incident underscores ongoing risks faced by peacekeepers in southern Lebanon, where tensions persist despite the absence of large-scale hostilities in recent years.
