The tests, conducted on Thursday, evaluated the performance of a “special mission” warhead for a tactical ballistic missile, an upgraded multiple rocket launch system and extended-range shells for a self-propelled gun-howitzer, according to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

KCNA said Kim described the results as evidence of technological progress aimed at transforming North Korea’s firepower posture along the southern border, indicating that the systems are intended to target strategic facilities in South Korea, including airfields, ports and U.S. military installations.

Kim said North Korea’s self-defense strategy requires strengthening “the deadly and destructive offensive posture to make no enemy dare to confront,” adding that maintaining constant uncertainty and fear among adversaries is a key element of the country’s deterrence policy, KCNA reported.

The state news agency said the newly tested special mission warhead is designed to inflict significant damage on critical enemy infrastructure, including airfields, ports and power facilities.

The latest weapons demonstrations came only days after North Korea commissioned the Choe Hyon, a 5,000-ton destroyer that Kim has described as a symbol of the country’s expanding naval and nuclear capabilities. The vessel is regarded as North Korea’s most advanced warship to date.

Pyongyang has accelerated the development of its strategic and conventional weapons since negotiations with the United States collapsed in 2019. North Korea has maintained that any future dialogue would require Washington to abandon its demand for denuclearization as a precondition for talks.

Kim has also adopted a more confrontational stance toward South Korea, designating it as North Korea’s “principal enemy” and reinforcing military infrastructure along the heavily fortified inter-Korean border.

North Korea has simultaneously expanded its diplomatic engagement with Russia through support for Moscow’s war in Ukraine, while also strengthening ties with China. Earlier this month, Chinese President Xi Jinping visited Pyongyang for his first summit with Kim in seven years.

Defense Ministry spokesperson Maj. Gen. Turki Al-Maliki said claims circulating about an attack on the strategic air base south of Riyadh were inaccurate and not supported by the findings of an official investigation.The clarification followed a brief warning issued by Saudi authorities shortly after dawn through the National Early Warning Platform, which advised residents in Al-Kharj to follow safety instructions and seek shelter.

The alert was lifted minutes later.Al-Maliki said air raid sirens sounded after authorities detected a ballistic missile launch from Yemen. Initial tracking data created uncertainty about the projectile’s intended destination, prompting precautionary measures.

Subsequent investigations determined that the missile had been launched toward another country in the region but malfunctioned during flight and deviated from its original course due to technical issues, according to the ministry.The missile eventually landed in an unpopulated area near the Saudi-Yemeni border, Al-Maliki said, adding that no damage or casualties were reported.

The incident occurred amid heightened regional tensions after Israel and Iran exchanged attacks on Monday for the first time since a ceasefire brokered by Washington two months earlier. The renewed hostilities raised concerns about a broader escalation across the Middle East and the future of ongoing diplomatic efforts between the United States and Iran.Saudi Arabia has remained on heightened alert throughout the regional conflict.

During March, Saudi air defenses intercepted multiple drones and missiles launched by Iran and allied groups targeting locations across the Kingdom as fighting expanded beyond Iran and Israel.Riyadh, along with other Arab governments, has repeatedly condemned attacks targeting regional states, describing them as destabilizing actions that threaten security, energy infrastructure and commercial activity across the Middle East.

Prince Sultan Air Base is one of Saudi Arabia’s most important military installations and has played a significant role in regional defense operations and security coordination with international partners.

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said it was analyzing the latest launch in coordination with U.S. authorities. A separate launch detected on Tuesday from the Pyongyang area is believed to have involved a ballistic missile, though officials said it may have failed shortly after takeoff.

Yonhap news agency, citing military officials, reported that Tuesday’s projectile flew eastward before showing signs of abnormality in the early stage of flight and disappearing. South Korean authorities are assessing whether the launch constituted a failed ballistic missile test.

Seoul typically confirms ballistic missile launches promptly as they violate United Nations Security Council resolutions, while taking a more cautious approach when projectiles may be cruise missiles or conventional weapons.

North Korea has consistently rejected UN restrictions on its weapons programs, arguing they infringe on its sovereign right to self-defense.

The launches come amid renewed tensions following statements from North Korean officials indicating no shift in their stance toward South Korea. Jang Kum Chol, a senior foreign ministry official, said Pyongyang continues to view Seoul as a hostile adversary despite recent diplomatic signals.

“The identity of the ROK, the enemy state most hostile to the DPRK, can never change with any words or conduct,” Jang was quoted as saying by state media KCNA, using the formal acronyms for South and North Korea.

His remarks followed earlier comments from Kim Yo Jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, which some in Seoul had interpreted as conciliatory after South Korean President Lee Jae Myung expressed regret over drone incursions earlier this year.

Jang said those remarks were intended as a warning rather than a gesture of goodwill, underscoring Pyongyang’s continued hardline posture.
