Ahmedabad-Indian investigators are unlikely to issue a final report into the crash of an Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner by

Ahmedabad-Indian investigators are unlikely to issue a final report into the crash of an Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner by the first anniversary of the accident on June 12, as analysis of the aircraft’s engines remains incomplete, according to a source familiar with the investigation.

The Air India jet crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad on June 12, 2025, killing 260 people in the world’s deadliest aviation disaster in a decade. The aircraft was powered by engines manufactured by GE Aerospace, which have remained a central focus of the inquiry.

Investigators conducted engine tests in April and traveled to France last month as part of an examination of the aircraft’s engine management unit, the source said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the details have not been made public.
Bloomberg News reported earlier on Thursday that a final report could be released within three months after technical studies involving the engines, which were sent to the United States for examination, are completed.

Under international aviation rules, accident investigators are expected to publish a final report within one year of a crash. When an investigation remains unfinished, authorities typically issue an interim statement outlining progress made in the inquiry.

Reuters reported last month that Indian officials were preparing an interim report rather than a final determination ahead of the anniversary because of the complexity of the investigation.

India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), the civil aviation ministry, Air India, the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board, Boeing and GE Aerospace did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

A preliminary report released last year found that the aircraft’s engine fuel control switches moved almost simultaneously from the “RUN” position to “CUTOFF” shortly after takeoff, cutting fuel supply to both engines and leading to a loss of thrust.

The findings intensified scrutiny of cockpit actions in the moments before the crash. Reuters reported last year that an early assessment by U.S. officials, based in part on cockpit voice recorder dialogue, supported the possibility that the captain had cut fuel flow to the engines. The AAIB subsequently said it was too early to reach definitive conclusions.

The captain’s father later petitioned India’s Supreme Court for an independent investigation, arguing that potential causes beyond deliberate pilot action should be fully examined.

The Federation of Indian Pilots wrote on June 5 to the civil aviation minister, aviation regulator and the prime minister’s office urging investigators not to release an interim report without obtaining additional technical information from Boeing and Air India.

According to a letter reviewed by Reuters, the pilots’ body argued that further data were necessary to evaluate and challenge what it described as a pilot-suicide theory being explored during the investigation.
The preliminary report did not issue any safety recommendations to Boeing or GE Aerospace, indicating investigators had not identified technical deficiencies requiring immediate corrective action at that stage.

The accident marked the first fatal crash involving Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner since the aircraft entered commercial service in 2011.

The crash occurred during Air India’s ongoing restructuring following its privatization, a transformation that has faced challenges from supply-chain disruptions, the conflict involving Iran and airspace restrictions imposed by Pakistan on Indian carriers.

Beirut-Lebanon’s aviation regulator has launched a safety audit of national carrier Middle East Airlines (MEA) after international pilot groups raised

Beirut-Lebanon’s aviation regulator has launched a safety audit of national carrier Middle East Airlines (MEA) after international pilot groups raised concerns that crews were being asked to operate flights near active conflict zones and faced repercussions for reporting safety incidents.

The review places new scrutiny on the Beirut-based airline, which has continued operating throughout Lebanon’s economic crisis and ongoing regional conflict while many foreign carriers reduced or suspended flights across parts of the Middle East.

The audit follows complaints from the International Federation of Air Line Pilots’ Associations (IFALPA), which warned that civilian aircraft were being flown in proximity to military activity, including Israeli airstrikes near Beirut’s airport. IFALPA President Ron Hay described such operations as posing unacceptable risks to passengers and crews.

Lebanon’s Civil Aviation Authority said it initiated a safety review and entered discussions with MEA regarding the concerns. The regulator said the audit process remains ongoing, although preliminary oversight inspections conducted between May 18 and June 1 found the airline compliant with regulatory and operational safety requirements.

MEA rejected the allegations, citing its strong safety record and stating that all flights during hostilities were conducted under risk assessments developed with Lebanese authorities and aviation regulators. The airline also denied claims that pilot training assignments were used as disciplinary measures against those reporting safety issues.

The dispute has drawn attention from international aviation groups and airline partners. Pilot associations informed members of the SkyTeam alliance, which includes carriers such as Air France and Delta Air Lines, about the concerns. Both airlines said safety oversight of partner carriers remains a priority.

Additional questions were raised over financial support provided by MEA to aviation sector employees during Lebanon’s financial collapse.

Pilot groups argued the payments could create perceptions of conflicts of interest in regulatory oversight, while the airline said the support was coordinated with government authorities to maintain critical aviation infrastructure and did not affect the regulator’s independence.

Berlin-Operations at Munich Airport were suspended for about an hour on Saturday after pilots reported a suspected drone sighting near the airfield, prompting authorities to halt flights while security teams investigated the potential threat.

The disruption began shortly after 9:00 a.m. local time when two pilots reported what appeared to be drones in the vicinity of the airport, according to police.

In coordination with German air traffic control authorities, security officials ordered the temporary closure of the airport’s runways as a precautionary measure, a police spokesperson said.

Authorities deployed a police helicopter and emergency personnel to assess the situation and search the surrounding area for any potential aerial threat.

Airport operations resumed at 10:05 a.m. after investigators completed their initial assessment, airport officials said.

An airport spokesperson said an extensive search conducted by emergency services found no evidence of a threat to public safety, allowing normal flight movements to restart.

The incident underscores ongoing concerns among European aviation authorities regarding unauthorized drone activity near airports, where even unconfirmed sightings can trigger operational disruptions due to safety risks posed to commercial aircraft during takeoff and landing.

Munich Airport, one of Germany’s busiest aviation hubs, did not immediately provide details on the number of flights affected by the temporary suspension.

Kathmandu-Turkish Airlines passenger aircraft carrying 277 passengers and 11 crew members caught fire while landing at Tribhuvan International Airport on Monday, forcing a temporary runway shutdown though all aboard escaped unharmed, Nepalese aviation authorities said.

The Istanbul-to-Kathmandu flight ignited after sparks emerged from the aircraft’s right landing gear during landing, according to Gyanendra Bhul, a spokesman for Nepal’s civil aviation authority.

“All aboard are safe, the rescue part is over. We are now investigating the accident,” Bhul told AFP.The incident briefly disrupted operations at Nepal’s busiest international gateway, with the airport’s sole runway closed for nearly two hours before reopening later in the morning.

Authorities did not immediately disclose the extent of damage to the aircraft or specify the model involved in the incident. The accident renewed scrutiny of aviation safety in Nepal, a mountainous nation known for difficult flying conditions, remote airstrips and rapidly changing weather patterns that have challenged pilots and airlines for decades.

Nepal’s aviation sector has faced repeated criticism following a series of fatal crashes in recent years. The European Union continues to blacklist all Nepalese airlines from operating within EU airspace over safety concerns.

In response to mounting international pressure, Nepalese authorities last year announced plans to upgrade aviation infrastructure, including installing improved radar systems and enhanced weather-monitoring equipment.

Monday’s accident also revived memories of a previous runway incident involving Turkish Airlines in Kathmandu. In 2015, a Turkish Airlines aircraft carrying 224 passengers skidded off the runway at Tribhuvan International Airport during landing.

No passengers were injured, but the disabled aircraft shut the airport for four days, triggering widespread international flight cancellations.

Moscow— A Ukrainian drone strike killed three civilians, including a child, in Russia’s Vladimir region on Tuesday after hitting residential infrastructure, while Russian air defences intercepted more than 260 drones nationwide, authorities said, prompting temporary closures at Moscow airports to ensure flight safety.

Vladimir region governor Alexander Avdeev said on Telegram that “enemy drones attacked civilian infrastructure,” adding that two adults and their seven-year-old son were killed when a drone struck a residential building.

He said a five-year-old girl was hospitalized with burns.Russian officials said the scale of aerial activity was among the largest reported in recent months, with air defence systems engaged across multiple regions.

Some of the drones were approaching Moscow, leading aviation authorities to briefly suspend operations at the capital’s airports as a precautionary measure. No immediate comment was issued by Ukrainian authorities regarding the reported strikes.

Both sides have intensified drone warfare as part of the broader conflict, frequently targeting infrastructure and logistical nodes.

The incident underscores the continued expansion of aerial attacks beyond frontline areas, with civilian regions increasingly affected as both Russia and Ukraine deploy long-range unmanned systems.

New York — Air traffic control staffing at LaGuardia Airport on the night of a fatal March 22 collision may

New York — Air traffic control staffing at LaGuardia Airport on the night of a fatal March 22 collision may have breached established procedures by combining key controller roles before midnight, according to a document reviewed by Reuters.

The incident, involving an Air Canada jet and a fire truck at around 11:37 p.m. local time, killed both pilots and has intensified concerns over staffing shortages and operational pressures within U.S. air traffic control.

According to a LaGuardia Tower standard operating procedures document, local air control and ground control roles should not be combined before midnight or within 90 minutes of a shift starting.

The rule was introduced following a 1997 ground collision at the airport and remained in force as of 2026.

Preliminary information suggests that, on the night of the crash, one controller may have been handling both runway operations and ground traffic, a practice inconsistent with those procedures.

The National Transportation Safety Board said it is examining the duties performed by controllers at the time, though it has not confirmed whether roles were combined.

NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy said two controllers were working in the tower: one overseeing active runways and another acting as controller-in-charge while issuing departure clearances.

However, it remains unclear who was responsible for ground traffic management.Audio recordings reviewed by multiple current and former controllers suggest the runway controller may also have been handling ground movements, though this has not been officially confirmed.

Data showed 70 commercial flights operated at LaGuardia between 10 p.m. and the time of the crash, significantly above the average of 53 for that period in recent years, increasing workload complexity.

Controllers cited by Reuters said such traffic levels would typically require additional staffing rather than consolidation of roles. The Federal Aviation Administration, which oversees air traffic control, did not respond to requests for comment.

Investigators have emphasized that aviation accidents generally result from multiple contributing factors rather than a single cause, with the inquiry into the collision ongoing.
