Residents carrying children, personal belongings, tents and pets sought shelter in underground metro stations after air raid alerts were issued across much of Ukraine. The latest assault marked Russia’s most extensive attack on Ukraine since the middle of June, according to the available information.

Earlier, Zelensky had warned of the possibility of a significant overnight assault and announced he was cutting short his visit to Dublin, where he had traveled for the start of Ireland’s six-month rotating presidency of the European Union. Ukrainian officials have not disclosed further operational details regarding the attack.

The heightened security situation also prompted neighboring Poland, a member of both NATO and the European Union, to scramble fighter aircraft as a precautionary measure while Russian strikes unfolded near the alliance’s eastern frontier.

The attack came as diplomatic efforts to halt the conflict remained stalled. Zelensky has proposed direct talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin aimed at ending the war, now in its fifth year, but the Kremlin has rejected the proposal.

At the same time, hostilities have continued to intensify on both sides of the border. Ukraine has recently expanded long-range strikes deeper into Russian territory, targeting energy infrastructure and contributing to disruptions that have reportedly forced Russia to import gasoline from suppliers including India amid fuel shortages.

Russian regional authorities also reported Ukrainian drone attacks overnight. Alexander Drozdenko, governor of Russia’s northwestern Leningrad region, said air defenses destroyed six drones over the region, which hosts significant oil refining and export facilities.

Separately, officials in Russia’s Belgorod region, bordering Ukraine, said a drone struck a residential home, killing one man and injuring his wife. The reports were published by local authorities on Telegram.

Reuters could not independently verify battlefield claims or casualty figures released by either side. Moscow and Kyiv have repeatedly said they do not deliberately target civilians, although attacks throughout the conflict have caused extensive civilian casualties and widespread destruction of homes, energy infrastructure and public facilities across both countries.

Authorities in Russia’s Krasnodar region said debris from intercepted Ukrainian drones ignited a fire at the Slavyansk-na-Kubani oil refinery, one of southern Russia’s largest refining facilities. Regional Governor Veniamin Kondratyev said one person was killed in Slavyansk and another was injured in a nearby village.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that Ukrainian forces had targeted the Slavyansk refinery and said a second refinery in Russia’s Yaroslavl region was also struck during the overnight operation.

“Tonight, our long-range sanctions reached two oil refineries in Russia,” Zelensky said on the Telegram messaging platform, adding that the attacks were intended to reduce resources supporting Russia’s military campaign.

The Associated Press could not independently verify videos circulating on Russian social media that appeared to show heavy smoke rising from the Slavyansk refinery.

The Slavyansk facility processes nearly 4 million metric tons of crude oil annually, according to its operator, and supplies petroleum products including fuel oil, naphtha and marine fuel for export through Russia’s Black Sea ports.

Russian authorities did not immediately confirm damage to the refinery in the Yaroslavl region. Governor Mikhail Evraev said temporary road closures were imposed following what he described as a Ukrainian drone attack, while Russia’s civil aviation agency briefly suspended operations at Yaroslavl Airport and several other airports in southern and western Russia.

In Russia’s Belgorod region, acting Governor Alexander Shuvayev said a separate Ukrainian drone strike killed one person and wounded another near the border with Ukraine.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said its air defenses intercepted 213 Ukrainian drones overnight over Russian territory, occupied Crimea, and the Black and Azov seas.

Ukraine’s air force, meanwhile, said Russia launched 142 long-range drones and eight missiles overnight. It said Ukrainian air defenses destroyed 125 drones and seven missiles before they reached their targets.

Ukraine has significantly expanded long-range strikes against Russian energy facilities and military-industrial infrastructure in recent months, saying the campaign is aimed at disrupting fuel supplies, reducing revenues that finance Moscow’s military operations, and increasing pressure on the Kremlin as the war enters its fifth year.

The statement came after Iran said it had carried out strikes against targets linked to U.S. forces in the region, though Tehran did not identify the locations or specify the targets involved.

Bahrain said the reported drone attacks constituted a violation of its sovereignty but did not immediately provide details on the number of drones, the locations targeted or whether there were casualties or damage.

The incident marks a further escalation in regional tensions as military exchanges involving Iran and the United States continue despite ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at reaching a broader agreement to end the conflict.

There was no immediate independent verification of the reported attacks, and Iranian authorities did not directly comment on Bahrain’s accusations beyond their earlier statement that strikes had been carried out against U.S.-linked targets in the region.

The “Immediate Combat Readiness Exercise” will run through Friday and forms part of Taiwan’s broader military modernization efforts to shift training toward realistic wartime scenarios and away from traditional scripted drills, the Ministry of National Defense said on Sunday.

The exercise comes as Taiwan increasingly bases portions of its military planning on the possibility that China could transform one of its frequent military operations around the island into a real attack with little warning.

In a statement, the UAE foreign ministry said Iran had launched nearly 3,000 ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and drones toward the UAE and other countries across the region, causing civilian casualties and damage to infrastructure.

The ministry described the attacks as a violation of state sovereignty and a direct threat to regional security and stability.

“The UAE has condemned in the strongest terms the unprovoked Iranian attacks and threats targeting the UAE and countries across the region,” the statement said.
