10 new trains to boost Saudi Arabia’s northern rail network

Riyadh – Saudi Arabia Railways has announced a major tender for the supply of 10 new passenger trains for the northern rail network, signaling the Kingdom’s commitment to modernizing its transport infrastructure and expanding intercity connectivity.

The initiative forms part of the National Transport and Logistics Strategy and aligns with the broader objectives of Vision 2030 to enhance mobility, improve passenger experience, and support sustainable transport solutions across the country.

The tender covers all aspects of the project, including design, manufacturing, and supply of the new trains, as well as fleet maintenance services to ensure operational readiness and long-term sustainability of the assets.

Interested companies are required to submit bids by May 11, 2026, following approved regulatory procedures for public tenders, providing an opportunity for domestic and international firms to contribute to the Kingdom’s growing rail sector.

Saudi Arabia Railways CEO Bashar Al-Malik said expanding the passenger train fleet is a strategic priority for the northern network, which connects key cities such as Riyadh, Al-Majmaah, Qassim, Hail, Jouf, and Al-Qurayyat.

The new trains will nearly triple the network’s operational capacity, increasing annual seating to over 2.4 million passengers and strengthening the railway’s ability to accommodate rising intercity travel demand.

Plans are already underway to further expand the northern rail line, including the development of new stations such as Al-Zulfi, which will improve accessibility and connectivity for smaller cities and regions.

This expansion is part of a phased approach by Saudi Arabia Railways to modernize and enlarge its passenger fleet, improve operational efficiency, and provide reliable and high-quality services for travelers nationwide.

The northern rail expansion complements ongoing projects on the eastern line, where 10 new trains are being manufactured to enhance service reliability, operational performance, and passenger experience. By investing in modern rolling stock, Saudi Arabia aims to develop an integrated, efficient, and safe railway network that supports the Kingdom’s economic diversification, urban development, and tourism growth under Vision 2030.

The project is expected to create opportunities for technology transfer, local manufacturing, and workforce development, aligning with Saudi Arabia’s broader industrial and employment goals.

Modern trains will feature advanced safety systems, energy-efficient designs, and comfortable interiors to meet international standards, providing passengers with a seamless and sustainable travel experience.

Rail transport is a critical component of Saudi Arabia’s National Transport and Logistics Strategy, which seeks to reduce congestion on roads, lower carbon emissions, and promote sustainable mobility solutions across regions.

The addition of 10 new trains to the northern network will support these objectives while encouraging greater use of public transport and facilitating regional economic integration.

The tender represents a significant step in Saudi Arabia’s vision for modern, efficient, and reliable railway infrastructure, which is expected to transform passenger mobility and support intercity tourism, trade, and commerce.

By expanding capacity and improving service quality, the Kingdom is enhancing connectivity between major urban centers and remote areas, contributing to national development and social cohesion.
