Russia Unleashes Largest Drone Attack on Ukraine Since War Began – Zelenskyy
Kyiv — Ukraine has suffered its most extensive drone assault since the start of the war, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced, condemning Russia’s “aerial terror” as more than 250 drones struck Ukrainian territory overnight.
The attack comes just days before the third anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion, which began on February 24, 2022.
“Every day, our people stand against aerial terror,” Zelenskyy wrote on X. “On the eve of the third anniversary of the full-scale war, Russia launched 267 attack drones against Ukraine – the largest attack since Iranian drones began striking our cities and villages.”
Ukraine’s air force reported that 138 drones were shot down, while another 119 were neutralized through electronic warfare. Despite these defensive efforts, damage was reported across five regions.
In a grim assessment of the past week, Zelenskyy revealed that Russia had launched nearly 1,150 attack drones, more than 1,400 guided aerial bombs, and 35 missiles of various types at Ukraine. He praised the country’s air defense forces and urged international allies to maintain unity in pursuit of a “just and lasting peace.”
“This is achievable through the unity of all partners – we need the strength of all of Europe, the strength of America, the strength of everyone who seeks lasting peace,” he emphasized.
Tensions Rise Amid Trump’s Comments on War
The escalation coincides with heightened tensions between Zelenskyy and former U.S. President Donald Trump, who referred to the Ukrainian leader as a “dictator” earlier in the week. Trump also falsely claimed that Ukraine had instigated the war, raising concerns about his stance on the conflict.
During a Saturday news conference, Trump reiterated his belief that a resolution is within reach, stating, “I’ve spoken to President Putin, and I think that thing [the war] is going to end.” His recent communications with the Russian leader have further unsettled European and Ukrainian officials.
Ukraine has firmly rejected any negotiations conducted without its involvement, particularly after being excluded from recent U.S.-Russia diplomatic talks in Saudi Arabia. Reports indicate that the U.S. has sought an agreement granting access to Ukraine’s natural resources in exchange for continued military support.
While Trump has suggested that a deal is close, sources familiar with the discussions told Sky News that Zelenskyy is not prepared to sign any agreement under the current terms.
As the war nears its third year, Ukraine remains steadfast in its resistance, calling for sustained global backing against Russian aggression.
