Kerman — At least 35 mourners have been killed and over 48 injured on Tuesday during a fatal stampede that took place at the funeral procession of slain Iranian commander Qassem Soleimani in his hometown of Kerman in eastern Iran.
According to reports from Iranian state TV, the deaths were confirmed by the head of Iran’s emergency medical services, Pirhossein Koulivand.
He said: “Unfortunately as a result of the stampede, some of our compatriots have been injured and some have been killed during the funeral processions.”
Thousands of pro-regime Iranians took part in the funeral processions of Soleimani, the former commander of the blacklisted Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), who was accused of engineering massacres and killings in Syria, Iraq, Lebanon, Yemen and within Iran too.
Soleimani was killed in a US airstrike on Friday in Baghdad which has sparked calls across Iran for revenge against U.S.
