Kolkata — Nobel laureate Amartya Sen said that “Jai Shri Ram” slogan is now being used to beat up people across the country, and he never heard the slogan being used this way in the past, he said while addressing a gathering at Jadavpur University in north India’s Kolkata city on Friday.
Further he said that Ram Navmi (birthday of Hindu deity Ram) was never a part of Bengali culture, but it has slowly gained popularity these days.
He said, “I had never heard of Ram Navami before. I asked my four-year-old grandchild who is your favourite deity? She replied, ‘Maa Durga’. The significance of Maa Durga cannot be compared with Ram Navami.”
“If people of a certain religion are scared to move freely or are fear-bound, it is a serious matter,” he expressed.
On the other side, BJP President of West bengal Dilip Ghosh panicked on Sen’s comments and said that he doesn’t know Bengal region, Bengali and Indian culture.
The slogan “Jai Shri Ram” has been started recently to terrorize and lynch Indian minorities. Several cases of mob-lynching is surfacing the media, and the recent attack on Jharkand’s Tabrez Ansari drew heavy criticisms throughout the nation.
